Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on KZfaq, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on KZfaq. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on KZfaq, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.

Pink Floyd was the soundtrack to my teen years. Their work is monumental, deep, incredible. I could never be objective about anything they’ve done. Enjoy the ride. You have to calm down, be patient and listen with an inner ear. Gilmour’s guitar work has often been called Space Blues.

Syd Barrett continued to influence Pink Floyd long after he left the band. Roger Waters in particular refers to him in the lyrics of many other songs. This album, Wish You Were Here, is largely a tribute to Syd, he is all over Dark Side of the Moon and he pops up repeatedly in The Wall. After Waters left, David Gilmour continued to reference Syd, especially in The Division Bell album, which takes many looks back at the the history of the band and the relationships of its members. High Hopes, which you already reacted to, is a good example of that. Roger Waters seemed to never really get over Syd's leaving the band, and I have always believed that was a major component of the difficulties between Waters and Gilmour. Although the band reached its greatest heights after Syd was replaced, Gilmour was not (and never could be) Syd. That is something Waters never really accepted, and even Gilmour struggled with it right up to The Division Bell, when he seems to finally come to terms and finds peace. The more you learn about Syd Barrett, the better you will understand Pink Floyd.

I might have worded it a little different…. The band reached its greatest heights after Gilmour joined. Thank goodness Gilmour was not Syd or I doubt they would have ever reached the heights that they did. David Gilmour's voice and guitar became the perfect vehicle for all of Roger's angst and anxiety. The only real struggle was perhaps Roger's inability to fully accept and appreciate David's exemplary musical talents over the loss of his childhood friend. I don't think Gilmour struggled with anything other than Roger's troubled attitude and mind which in many ways was both a curse and blessing for the band in that it presented them with sooo much material to work with.

@CriticalReacts Pink Floyd wouldn't have evolved the way they did without Gilmour. Syd was a talent and visionary, but David's tone and feel, along with his musical genius is what brought Floyd to the masses. Just as Roger's concepts and lyrics are brilliant, it's the music that grabs the listener at first, leading to fans leaning into lyrics and concepts.

@glennbrock6560 Great song! They played it live at every show during the In the Flesh tour in '77. Set 1 was all of Animals, set 2 was all of Wish You Were Here, encores were always Money and Us And Them. A couple of times, they threw in a blues jam or Careful With That Axe, Eugene fir good measure. Welcome To the Machine was played periodically during the Delicate Sound Of Thunder tour as well. The ending on that tour had added drums and guitar. It really added to it imo.

They were saying that look in your eyes is like black holes in the sky! That refers to a lot of pictures of Syd Barrett when he was badly affected by the drugs he was taking.. just look at some pictures of Syd Barrett dated around nineteen sixty-eight because it's exactly what his eyes looked like!!! You also said something about the "steel breeze".. that's a slang term for the sound that's made by striking /picking the steel guitar strings on an electric guitar.

It was about Sid Barrett’s descent into madness. He was the first lead singer of the band and when he left Roger Waters took over as lead. They sa Sid years later and couldn’t believe how much he’d changed and his mental illness had left him destitute.

You pretty much hit it on the head. The song is in reference to Syd Barrett the co-founder and original creative mind and vocalist of Pink Floyd. Syd had a mental breakdown in the late sixties and had to be dropped from the band. Once a vibrant rising star he became pretty much an empty shell. This had a profound impact on the band moving forward and you'll find themes of madness runs through much of their material. "The Wall" being a prime example. You know you can always look up the lyrics separately and have them there in front of you, they don't need to be part of the video. Check out "Wish You Were Here" next from this same album. And yes, you definitely did it right doing the studio version 1st. 👍 "You were caught in the cross fire of childhood and stardom. Blown on the steel breeze. Come on you target for faraway laughter. Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!" -- S - shine on Y - you crazy D - diamond

Founding band member Syd Barrett was dropped from the band suffering severe mental health issues and the effects of drug abuse. The "Steel Breeze" was the sound from the strings of the electric guitar. Steel Breeze was also used as a metaphor for living off previous success.

When Syd Barrett was young, he was full of life, wonder, excitement.......and everyone liked him. His new girl friends parents and siblings and friends all liked him. The music sharks and suits liked him. The band liked him. The fans Loved him. He quickly took over the band after joining them ( before they changed their name to Pink Floyd ). He couldn’t play guitar and was not a talented singer..... but he insisted on being the singer, lead guitarist, lyricist and composer...... and the band followed him like kids followed the Pied Piper. The drugs took all that away...... he became a non functioning ZOMBIE. He was avante guard, always different, never technically proficient but always artistically outrageous...... Syd stopped being Syd and the music and the band continued on into the future....... circling the steel breeze that Syd rode all the way to another universe.

The song is in part an ode to their departed band member Syd Barrett who had a mental breakdown. The story goes that he actually wandered into the studio while they were recording the song and was not initially recognized because he had changed so much (overweight, shaved his eyebrows etc) - there is at least one photo of him in the studio. Syd was one of the original members and is credited with some of their more experimental, odd, sometimes playful songs. Syd is said to have been a big force in the very early Floyd days being described bright, charismatic good looking guy that was very creative. He was mostly only a major contributing member for their first album and what led up to the first album. Some have thought he probably had schizophrenia that was perhaps worsened by drug use. David Gilmore who was not in the band originally but at least knew some of the band members was brought in as Syd started to fail. David started by learning Syd’s guitar parts as it is reported Syd would sometimes stand on the stage strumming one chord over and over. For a short period of time there were 5 members in the band. It is reported however the other 4 one day as they were going to pick up Syd for a gig decided not to pick up Syd - a sad ending. I think that is reasonable to say that while Syd was only in the band he had a profound effect on the early trajectory of their music. The first Pink Floyd album has songs that are not well known outside of hardcore Pink Floyd fans with at least one exception. “Interstellar Overdrive” was the song that Dr Strange (in the first movie) is playing in his car when he gets into his car crash. Syd Barrett is said to be the one that came up with the main riff of the song that was composed in 1966 inspired by the humming of someone working with the band. Here is a very early video of the band playing the song in 1967. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNdli9iY3rrPc5s.html

The Crazy Diamond refers to Syd Barrett, co-founder and brilliant creator, who went 'crazy' as a result of drug use and was ultimately let go after just one and a half albums. It reached the point where he could not perform on stage (or in the studio), which led to them adding David Gilmour as support, and ultimately as replacement. They have written a number of tracks describing their sorrow at losing a band member and friend. That's why this album is titled "Wish You Were Here" - to enjoy the success they never achieved while he was in the band (frankly, that success would have NEVER come with Syd in the band). BTW, the Pulse version is shortened - they play parts 1-5 and 9, and it works amazingly well.
