Same. I played this for a gf and when it was over, I talked about how it's this beautiful, wordless evocation of the joy of life turning to grief and anger and "raging against the dying of the light" before finally falling into acceptance and drifting peacefully into the hereafter. I talked about how, even without words, each stage was so clear and apparent and gorgeously communicated that it gave me chills and tears and made me feel in touch with something greater, something profound. The girl got mad and went on a whole diatribe about how much she hates people trying to find meaning in music, books, movies, etc. and that artists should just say what they mean. She and I don't talk anymore. Pink Floyd, on the other hand, is still very much in my life. I definitely made the right choice.

Loved your reaction, Claire Torry is the singer, a petite white woman from England. She was only paid a very small amount of money to do this, but she ended up getting a whole lot more because Pink Floyd gave her no lyrics, no instructions other than sing along to the music. So in essence she wrote the lyrics to this song, and ended up getting writers royalties for The Great Gig In The Sky. I have noticed a lot of reactors who listen to this without listening to "Time/Breathe Reprise" first are really confused about the lack of lyrics and what the song means. You have to understand, Dark Side of the Moon is a concept album, each song flows into the next, so the whole album is meant to be heard in one sitting. If you listen closely to the "Time" lyrics, they are talking about being older, shorter of breath & one day closer to death. "Breathe Reprise" talks about the tolling of the iron bell, which means in a lot of cultures, someone has passed away. "The Great Gig In the Sky" in my opinion has three stages 1. raging against dying 2. acceptance and 3. peace. So anyways, sometime you need to just sit down, put your headphones on and listen to the whole Dark Side of the Moon album at one time. Actually, Wish You Were Here, The Wall & Animals are also concept albums, and meant to be listened to from beginning to end in one sitting. I hope you enjoy your journey into the genius that is Pink Floyd. May I also suggest that you listen to at least two songs from the Pink Floyd Live at Pulse HD concert The Division Bell Tour 1994. "Comfortably Numb" from The Wall, do this after you have done the complete album, and "High Hopes" from the Momentary Lapse of Reason album.

A cute little blond white girl. She was invited to the recording session by her boyfriend I think. Pink Floyd wanted to add some vocals to the track....but weren't exactly sure what they wanted. There were NO lyrics, and they asked her to just improvise. She did this in 2 & 1/2 takes. They offered her a Heineken beer.....and she left after that. They didn't tell her if they liked it or not. She figured that it was just an experiment & that THAT would be the end of it...LOL. A few weeks later, she saw the album in the window of a record shop.....and saw her name listed as the vocalist on that song. The rest is history.

PINK FLOYD, "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY" Singer Claire Torry, was brought in to improvise her voice to go with this piano melody, to end side one of the Iconic Album "Dark Side of the Moon." By Album Producer Alan Parsons. She brought in her vocal sounds of this person's final moments as she went through the emotions of losing they're life. After the screaming of Fear, Confusion, Depression, memory of Family, and Friends. Quieting to the realization of acceptance that this is it, and finally her earthly voice turns into the echoing as her soul departs from her body as the dead sound of silence following the last piano chord.

The vocal solo is done by Claire Torry (a woman) and the message is to portray the 7 emotions of grief or the feelings involved before you die. Shock or Disbelief, denial, anger, bargaining, guilt, depression and acceptance. Knowing this, listen to the song and you can understand how her voice flows beautifully between every emotion.

Death is not about moving on, it’s about moving forward in the spirit of your loved one. I know, my beautiful husband died from a fall 9 months ago and the grief is U.N.bearable at times, but I encounter a heavenly peace when I know he’s with me.

Don't forget the beginning of the song, where it's the joy and energy of life. I've always loved that it starts there before the realization of death takes hold and you move into anger and grief before finally accepting and drifting peacefully away. It's a perfect, beautiful, wordless, heartbreaking, spiritual, strangely comforting summary of the human experience. Less a song and more a gorgeous piece of art truly using the voice as an instrument rather than just a vehicle for lyrics. Also, the fact that her vocal is "soul music" in both senses of the phrase shouldn't be lost on anybody.

Hahaha, I knew you'd flip out over this one man! Pink Floyd are 4 dudes, but the vocal on this song is by a guest singer, a British white woman, Claire Tory. This is the album studio recording, and they only recorded 2 takes, this is the 2nd one. Pink Floyd are known for their instrumental prowess, I personally consider the live performance of 'Comfortably Numb' from 1994 Earl's Court in London to be their best performance - the guitar solo is like 3 minutes longer than the studio version, and it's just indescribable. The stage and stadium lighting visuals are also absolutely amazing.

Clare Torry got a telephone call one day; a producer was recording an album, he remembered hearing her voice on a knock-off record, and he wanted her that voice for this record he was working on. She was quite busy, told him she'd not be able to do it until Sunday after next, in the afternoon. He was agreeable, she showed up, found it was a rather unconventional type of singing but she gave it a shot. And she nailed it on her first take.* *starting at about 1:09 The producer was Alan Parsons, the album was Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" which was being recorded at Abbey Road Studio. She sang her bit, thought it was quite a lark, walked on out the door. The song in context of the album " Dark Side of the Moon " is about the journey into the afterlife. Do yourself a favour and listen to the album in one sitting. It is about 45 minutes long but quite a journey in itself . You must listen with HEADPHONES. , no headphones is not an option. Love your reactions by the way.

It's certainly not something that could have been rehearsed, just one of those rare moments in human history caught on tape. Incredible.

Claire Tory broke my heart with this in 1972 and I never recovered. Dark side of he Moon and Wish You Were Here are the two albums that should be listened to from end to end together to get the full concept of that period of Pink Floyd from '72 to '75. The two albums together read like a book. For a taste, try ''Time'', ''Shine on you crazy diamond (parts 1-9)'' , ''Us and Them'' and ''Have a Cigar''.

Yet, its so beautiful, that I can’t be mad. I was 17 the first time I heard this in the 90’s. I wanted to cry, but was with my boys. It took my breath away, literally. That part where she is screaming like a chimpanzee.....its so primal and visceral, like the way a mother screams when her child is being harmed. This song traverses the stages of grief, but its the grief of one’s own impending death. We fight it.....fight it like nothing else, but ultimately we all know.....it is a battle that ALL have lost, so acceptance has to come.

Yours is one of my favorite reactions to this song...!! I have been listening to this song and Pink Floyd for 50 years and I am so pleased that you have captured on video the reaction I felt when I first heard this song so long ago... trust me this song does not EVER get old or played out even 50 years later... GODs blessings to you my friend!!!!

She was just told "no words." SHE said the idea came to her to be an instrument as a way to approach the song.

Since the whole album is a theme, you really should listen to "Time" right before it at least.

Listening to this out of context with the other songs is like opening up the middle of a book and reading a random chapter.....Go back ..turn the lights down lay back and give your self 43:00 minutes to listen to the whole album....you won't be disappointed!!

It was a vocalist named Clare Torry. They have always had a group of black female backup singers and for the most part it is usually one of the back up singers who sing in concert.

I'm late to this party, but that shocked look on your face in the first couple of minutes was everything 😂😂❤ I've rewatched it like 5 times. Love your reactions and how much you feel it. You are 💯real. I'm not that expressive, but watching your reactions is how I feel inside about alot of this music.

What you just heard, is (an amazing) a vocal interpretation of grief, pain, sorrow and enlightenment all in one, there are no words for that, just emotions. Claire Tory did one hell of a performance on this song, and where she did this alone in the studio, they need 3 singers on stage to do this live. One of many masterpieces by Pink Floyd, there is a lot, whole lot to explore here :) Thnx for the great reaction video :D
