"The Narrow Way" is a section on the studio half of Pink Floyd's fourth album Ummagumma. It was written and performed by David Gilmour and is divided into three parts. The only musician to feature is the composer (in this case, Gilmour), who recorded the song using multiple overdubs to play all the instruments himself.

I agree with you if only as a tendency. He has dismissed this many years ago and I suggest that he takes stock of his early 20s before he waxes too fully about his latest pieces before his LP release in Sept 2024.

A long time ago, in a nameless place, light years from here & now, we hid the spare cigarettes in the Ummagumma cassette case, atop the bathroom mirror box. We did it to keep them all from being smoked by the myriad of partygoers flowing in and out like waves of color wrapped in sound. We did it so that we would each have a cigarette to smoke when we finally came down from the trip to witness the carnage of aftermath. This practice of hiding reserves then became known as Ummagumma cigarettes.

Following the path as it leads towards the darkness in the north Weary stranger's faces show their sympathy They've seen that hope before And if you want to stay for a little bit Rest your aching limbs for a little bit Before you the night is beckoning And you know you can't delay You hear the night birds calling you But you can't touch the words they sing Close your aching eyes beyond your name Mist is swelling, creatures crawling Hear the roar get louder in your ears You know the folly was your own But the force behind can't conquer all your fears And if you want to stay for a little bit Rest your aching limbs for a little bit Before you the night is beckoning And you know you can't delay You hear the night birds calling you But you can't touch the restless sky Close your aging eyes beyond your name Throw your thoughts back many years To the time when there was life in every morning Perhaps a day will come When the nights will be as clear as on that morning And if you want to stay for a little bit Rest your aching limbs for a little bit Before you the night is beckoning And you know you can't delay You hear the night birds calling you But you can't touch the words they sing Close your aging eyes beyond your name

not really, the reason why "Echoes" is probably one of the finest songs ever made is, that it is the best outcome of both "versions" of early Floyd songwriting...... it is flawless blend of psychadelic(Syd) + progressive(Gilmour)..... every era of Floyd contain both, but early Floyd was more psychadelic than prog, then Gilmour's era was more progressive than psychadelic...... but "Echoes" is one of the few tracks, where both genres are equal....... that's why "Echoes" is hailed by both "stoner" fans, but also fans of great progressive musicianship......

My second fav Floyd track ever. Two reasons why I love it so much: The heavy guitar riffs at the beginning of part 2 and end of part 3 but even more so- the shockingly good drumming, especially at the end of part 3. On repeated listenings I often think that must be my main man Nick Mason, but no; it's Dave Gilmour at his artistic peak.

Apparently David Gilmour wrote, played all the instruments and sang vocals on this one. While most would say that “Echoes” is the tune that foreshadowed the sonic direction Pink Floyd was heading toward, I think “The Narrow Way” is clearly in that same vein. Therefore I conclude that David Gilmour’s influence gave Pink Floyd a direction that they would have never found otherwise.

Gilmour showed, with this and with Fat Old Sun, that he could compose really well. But he had to be forced to do it, apparently. (Fat Old Sun was the result of him being practically locked in the studio by the others until he came up with the song.) It's as if he had a real talent for songwriting, but it was stifled by lack of confidence -- perhaps because Roger was so spectacularly talented at it? And now his wife writes all his lyrics, and I don't believe she's come up with anything to match Narrow Way or Fat Old Sun. But I guess David would disagree with me.

@@chicklets4ever51 Yes, I have to agree, to a point. Polly's lyrics sometimes hit the mark, sometimes for a whole song, but often even in the good songs there's a phrase that just clunks badly. It's always puzzled me, that a novelist should have such a poor ear for lyrics. It may be that she's no worse than a heap of other writers, but no-one around her is game to say "Hey that line's rubbish". Every writer needs a fearless editor. As for David's lyrics, I seriously think that given the quality of Narrow Way and Fat Old Sun, he could have developed into something not far below Waters, had he worked at it a bit. Fat Old Sun is not Grantchester Meadows, but it's still a beautiful, evocative paean to Nature. Of course, one can hardly imagine Roger tolerating a competitor within the same band. Oh well. We shall never know. Now, if only David had practised guitar a bit more, he might have made a mark....

Let me tell you something: I play LOTR rpg with a group of friends. It was almost the same time when I started playing and discovering the experimental era of Pink Floyd, and this in my teenager years. My mind was (and still doing) very creative and imaginative and Ummagumma became an excelent ambient album to me by relate to all the adventures in Middle Earth. So I can tell you what I picture with The Narrow Way: Part 1: takes part in a warmy sunny midday, in a path in a forest. The group of adventurers are composed by elves, dwarves, humans and hobbits. They're walking, exploring, talking and planing the journey. The group is fine and happy. Part 2: they see at the distance a group of orcs and they are stunned, but rapidly they take their weapons and fight them. It took so much time the battle, they end very wounded and tired. Part 3: The sun goes down and the night begins, with much difficulty and despondent they see light from a village, they are welcome and the villagers help them with a smile and good disposition, They have a treatment for their wounds, a plate of food and a good rest. "Following the path as it leads towards The darkness in the North Weary strangers' faces show their sympathy They've seen that hope before" It's a very beautiful picture from my head and my inspirations that I couldn't keep for myself, I needed to share with you! I love how Pink Floyd can create beautiful worlds and scenarios.

This is the David Gilmour I love. In my acid dreams, he plays his guitar the narrow way to me from across a pond as it gets dark, until secrets buzz into view over the water, fleeting. I barely catch a glimpse before they go. As darkness falls, dense and occluding, I sense they were dark omens after all.

By far the best song on ummagumma, people tend to hate on this album because obviously it does have some bad parts but it has its moments of pure genius, if this song was on dark side of the moon or a more popular album it was probably be a classic Floyd staple.

The best track on the studio half! To me the live half was the best part. But on the studio Solo projects, I liked “The Narrow Way” the best! I agree that Roger’s part was awesome! Grandchester Meadowswill always be a favorite, and “Several Small Species..,” is one of the most unique recording projects I have ever heard! However it made people brains explode!! (I give it more points for that)! The Narrow Way pt 1. Is an instrumental Dave worked up before called “Baby Blue Shuffle”. It sounds Heavenly, so I call pt 1 “Heaven”. Quite pleasant and carefree until the scary UFO sounds start intruding! The 2nd part I simply call “Hell”. It truly sounds like a jam session in Hell! The effects go mad!!! Finally, part 3, which I consider the actual song, “The Narrow Way”, meaning the narrow path between Heaven and Hell! This is simply the best song on the studio album! I may be wrong, but I think Dave played every part, including bass, drums, and keyboards!

I believe there is a universe out there where Gilmour had his way with the band, and a universe where Waters had his way. I'd love to visit both of those universes just to see how the band did. But at the same time I think I live in the best possible universe where they were all doing funky shit in the beginning, hit their absolute peak by DSOTM, and then we got a tribute to the Pink pioneer which was both a heartfelt and jaw-dropping album. And then the band proceeded to give us a taste of first the Waters' rickety universe and then end it off with Gilmour's mellow swells. Absolutely perfect!

Following the path As it leads towards the darkness in the north. Weary strangers' faces show their sympathy; they've seen that hole before. And if you want to stay for a little bit... Rest your aching limbs for a little bit... Before you the night is beckoning, and you know you can't delay. You hear the night birds calling you, but you can't catch the words they say. Close your ears and eyes, be on your way. Mist is swirling, creatures crawling... hear the roar get louder in your ears. You know the folly was your own, but the force behind can't conquer all your fears. And if you want to stay for a little bit... Rest your aching limbs for a little bit... Before you the night is beckoning, and you know you can't delay. You hear the night birds calling you, but you can't catch the words they say. Close your ears and eyes, be on your way. Throw your thoughts back many years to the time when there was light with every morning. Perhaps a day will come when the light will be as bright as on that morning. And if you want to stay for a little bit... Rest your aching limbs for a little bit... Before you the night is beckoning, and you know you can't delay. You hear the night birds calling you, but you can't catch the words they say. Close your ears and eyes be on your way.

I was once told that there was a version that featured Roy Harper. Around 1983 I got the chance to ask Roy if this actually happened. Harper said not but wouldn't it have been great? In that arch way that he has. All I can say is that one could only dream how it might've sounded. This is my favourite solo piece from Ummmagumma followed by Nick's Grand Vizier.
