The Embryo - is a song by Pink Floyd. It was a concert staple in 1970-71, but was never released on a Pink Floyd studio album

+GunsGifts Galleries A 4 1/2 minute version was included on the "Works" anthology in the 80s. A classic case of too little, too late.
@moefoe4136 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree on that point. Their old label, Harvest Records, put out a compilation in 1970, Picnic - A Breath of Fresh Air, and the short version was included on it. From there, the song grew into this 10-plus minute-long beast live. It's a shame they never revisited it in this form. Then again, with enough live recordings of it floating around, perhaps its better off this way. It IS a shame this song faded into history, eclipsed by later works, if you'll pardon both puns.

Thanks for putting Embryo on U-Tube - what memories - I travelled to London to see the Floyd in concert in 1971. They finished the set with Embryo. They liked the special effects even in those days. It was dark, and there was a large pond in front of the stage, dry ice was thrown in, stobes were put onto the water, and a huge octopus emerged, very slowly, while they played Embryo. Absolutely stunning - I went out and bought the "Works" compilation the very next day!.

That said: * I suspect Floyd varied things a fair bit as this was pretty much always a live thing - For sure its NOT the same sound as the first times they did it. * At risk of sounding like a grummpy old 'nostagia's not what it used to be' ......... Not sure much that's coming out today has comparable lyrics. (Maybe Snoop Dog / Emminem collabration and Keny Arkana are among the closest equivalents (for content equivalence, not sound))?

Apparently, this was supposed to be the long piece in place of Echoes on Meddle, but the latter replaced it. I don't know where, but I've read once an analysis where the guy argued that Echoes lyrics and music was also about an embryo, but a bit more hidden in symbolism. The deep sea imagery would represent the womb and the idea of "primordial waters", and phrases like "I am you and what I see is you", "Help me understand the best I can" would imply a sort of mother/baby relation and the need to go out in the world. The final verses, with imagery of a window and "sunlight wings" that is "inviting and inciting me to rise" and conclude with "no one sings me lullabies, and no one makes me close my eyes, so I throw the windows wide, and call to you across the sky" would represent the birth. Also, Rick Wright's back vocals aren't always the same lyrics as Gilmour's, and I remember from the analysis that these were even clearer in this embryo thematics, but I can't find it anymore. Musically speaking, the part of "'the whales" would represent the womb, and the big build up after lead to the birth. So basically, the reason why it wasn't on Meddle was precisely because Echoes was what replaced it.
