This is not only my favourite Pink Floyd album, but one of the most brilliant albums ever. It certainly took a while to get started, because the band had previously made DSOTM, often regarded as one of the best and highest selling albums of all time, and they literally didnt know what to do. It's a great insight into how amazing they were that they were able to follow it up with something as incredible as this, let alone go on to produce Animals and The Wall afterwards. * Thanks very much for the reaction, guys. Literally, nothing in the Pink Floyd catalogue is bad. Their early work is fairly avant-garde and can be an acquired taste. Everything from Meddle onwards is more approachable and just as stellar as this.

57:45 Well technically David wrote the intro riff which repeats throughout the song, & Roger wrote the chord sequence that goes with the lyrics so I would say they both wrote the music 50/50... Additionally, Roger's lyrics are super important, but so is David's guitar and vocal performance. All around a pretty even colab between two great artists.

Pink Floyd is always the music of now because they don't sing about current events or date themselves! They sing about the human Condition and Human Relationships rather than narcissistic things or I have a big fast car or I'm trying to impress women! Instead they sing about things that are always relevant, the way we treat each other and so on! I really believe they'll continue to stay relevant in the same genre as Mozart and Beethoven because groups like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are so unique that people are going to be listening to them 500 and a thousand years from now with those others I mentioned in the same category pretty much! It's so interesting to watch reaction channels to Pink Floyd because the main reaction is always something like "Wow" or "That was Unbelievable" rather than a little "huh"...... and then, "let's move on"...... you guys are doing a great job and I really don't think you're pissing anybody off in fact you're being more like a group of guys just messing with one another, having fun and listening to great music, keep it up!! Last comment here, when you talk about Pink Floyd and The Blues, Rick Wright the keyboardist and also one of the singers, one of his major influences is "Miles Davis"! He loves "Miles Davis" and if you think about it after knowing this you can start to hear it in a lot of their music!!!

Yes he based a chord sequence in breathe on a sequence off “kind of blue” which in itself is a masterpiece.

Speaking of that Bluesy sound, Syd Barrett named Pink Floyd after two Southern African-American blues artists from the 20s and 30s... Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. The influence is real.

One of the things you need to remember about this album is that after Dark Side with its hugely iconic cover this album was covered in black plastic. You didn't see the guy on fire until you took it out of the plastic... And you are so right... This was in heavy rotation on my turntable for a long long time. And yes, I am an old git, I bought this album when it came out .

I first heard this album in 1978. I was in Mike How's living room and he was trying as hard as he could to rein in his excitement. I remember it like it was yesterday. Still sounds as fresh and brilliant today as it did back then. Thanks for doing the whole thing guys.

The “re-listenability” of this album (and all of Pink Floyd’s catalog imo) is undeniable. I bought WYWH on vinyl LP the day it released in the US in 1975, and I’ve listened to it literally hundreds of times in the 47 years since. I can still remember how I felt hearing it for the first time, being absolutely taken to a different world. I am still thrilled and enthralled every time I hear it again. No other band’s music does that for me, and I say that as a huge fan of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, the Stones, Yes, Jethro Tull, Bowie and all the other incredible music I grew up with in the 1970s. Pink Floyd is, for me, still and always the best there ever was or will be.

What amazes me about Pink Floyd, is perhaps more than any other band of their era and maybe beyond, is the way they managed to make they're own experiences (like Syd Barrett's decline, their own internal struggles) translate to universal themes of the human condition... that anyone can emphathize with... starting back with Meddle, and the fact they were so unafraid to explore and experiment. It's easy to see why they are so revered. I am puzzled how you guys haven't heard this yet... I'm your age, and it was sort of mandatory among my friends that you listened to PF. But no judgement, very cool of you to react to the whole album. I said it before on other vids, but i really like your fair analysis and humor with these.

The famous black Fender Stratocaster. Gilmour auctioned is entire guitar collection for charity and the total was around $21 million. The Black Stratocaster went for just under $4 million on its own.

46:40 The story with Roy Harper singing have a Cigar was that Roger strained his voice while recording the vocals for Shine On. This was in an era where studio time cost a lot of money, and you couldn't just record at your leisure from your home, so they didn't want to delay the album too long, and Roy just happened to be recording in the studio next door, so they tried having him sing it, and the band liked Roy's version basically. Later on for their next album Animals Pink Floyd did actually build their own studio which I think Roger & Nick (their drummer) were the main instigators of & most heavily involved with building probably wanting to take a more leisurely and perfectionist approach for their next album rather than being on the clock. While I do think it works well thematically for Roy to sing it, I still like the 1977 performances of Have a Cigar where Roger sings it better than the studio. (he also performed it well at his solo shows in the 80s) He has a more sarcastic sinister angst filled delivery, which is what he wanted the studio version to sound like. (we got more of that style on the next 3 albums though at least where PF got heavier & Roger took on more of the lead vocal duties)

Great reaction! Loved it! FYI, on Welcome To the Machine, it's Gilmour singing double tracked. The main vocal is the high strain with him in a much lower register to give the electronic drone effect. They double track Gilmour's voice in a lot of their songs.

Heard SOYCD so many times, and never paid attention to the time stamps. Brilliant outro by Rick Wright; at the very end, if you listen carefully, you can hear him play the beginning of "See Emily Play", one of Syd's early songs.

This album, second to The Wall is one of my favorite floyd albums. Have a Cigar is absolutely one of the best songs i've ever heard.

You don't need time stamps. The first five there is a definite end to each section of the song VII starts when the singing starts when the singing is over its VIII and the funeral march at the end is IX. Also Phish was influenced by the Dead much more than Floyd. Other than that loved your analysis of this album one of the greats. Glad you shared it with us.

1975 was the year Led Zeppelin brought out Physical Graffiti. There was a plethora of great original music that whole decade. I think we took it for granted, we were so indulged by the best bands. As for keyboards at that time, many bands in the 60s had the keyboard prominent in their sound. Procol Harem's Whiter Shade of Pale is a classic example of the keyboard being forward in the sound. Plenty more that i cant bring to mind at the moment.😂

The record label was pushing the band to write their next mega hit after Darkside. So the band took a year, and gave them a grand, sweeping, 9 part suite in tribute to their dear friend. A tender track telling them they miss him, aaaand two tracks saying "F*** You" to the record label. Even the album cover is two guys making a deal (on a studio lot, specifically), and one of them is getting burned. Gotta love em.

The seventies was the introduction of “Serious Headphoners” where musical indulgence was peppered with a cold drink and a joint so you could sail off into a musical journey. And yes we are still “the target of far away laughter”. Cheers😊

Long time Floyd fan here. I'd much rather have you guys chat over the songs than pause them, so that doesn't bother me. Nor do I expect you know everything about the band or an album on 1st listen lol. I thought your reactions were fine. And I can totally get how Welcome To The Machine may not hit right the first listen. It is a very odd song. This album was my intro to Floyd when I was 10 years old in 1975, it's remained my favorite ever since. Darkside is definitely the next one you should do. You probably know more from it than you think you do. But it's also a start to finish concept record and of course their biggest record.

You guys need to listen to the ghdansk concert especially good day for freedom and echoes to name two tracks i gaurentee you will be blown away the whole concert is phenomenal both visually and of course musically pink floyd definitely before their time for me I'm 74 years old and been a fan for fifty odd years I feel sad because i can't see any group or individuals coming to the fore who are anyway near as talented as pink floyd

I don't know whether Pink Floyd is "known" for it's vocal work, but Roger Waters at his best (which includes this album and The Dark Side of the Moon) was an absolute beast of a lyricist, and his lyrics combined with David Gilmour's guitar and voice, Rick Wright's keyboards and vocal harmonies, and Nick Mason's drum riffs made for some of the deepest and most poetic music of the generation. Pink Floyd absolutely should be known for their vocals -- as well as everything else.

Being a pensioner it would make much more sense for me to buy it as you're very costly! However I think at Xmas I'll treat myself to an album which would probably be a Beatles album even though I know em all so well ! 🤡

John, your comment is 4 months old, but I'm going to give my 2 cents anyway. "The Wall" is good enough that it would be considered a major groundbreaking milestone for any other band --- and *commercially,* it WAS a major milestone for Pink Floyd. But since it was Pink Floyd, those who knew their older work were somewhat disappointed, something not at the same level of what they had done. I'd call it myself a second-tier album, despite a few great moments. By then, Roger Waters' ego had grown like a cancer and started to create problems. He thought he WAS Pink Floyd and the others were there to serve him, and he behaved as a dictator. He started treating everyone like crap, especially keyboardist Rick Wright (who had a relatively reduced participation in "The Wall" and was later fired for good). So, "The Wall" didn't have that brilliant alchemy of the previous albums, and to me it sounds uneven, heterogeneous. What was Side 3 on vinyl is brilliant and the only part of the album where you can see hints of the old Pink Floyd alchemy. The rest is very good, don't get me wrong, but it's not a masterpiece and not really "Pink Floyd level". In fact, several parts of it don't sound much like Pink Floyd at all. If you want to get to know Pink Floyd better, in my opinion you should concentrate your efforts on the 1971-77 phase, when Pink Floyd was at its prime: "Meddle" (1971), the legendary (with good reason) "The Dark Side of the Moon" (1973), "Wish You Were Here" (1975), and "Animals" (1977). Though "Meddle" is the first chronologically, I'd advise you to save it for last. You'll understand better what they were doing and how "Meddle" was a sort of experiment for what they would do later. But all of these four albums are masterpieces.

You don't brush off 15 seconds at the end of a Pink Floyd song and just ASSUME it's just fading out. It's actually interesting what happens in that 15 seconds you turned off. Concentrate on listening.
