This is my first time ever listening to Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album. I sat and listened to the entire album in one sitting, and split it into two videos: Side One of the LP and Side Two. This is part two, "Have a Cigar", "Wish You Were Here" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Pts 6-9".

Al's Vinyl Collection is my way of sharing my passion with the world. I welcome all, if you're an avid Vinyl record enthusiast or just a passer-by, come and sit with me for 15 minutes to talk about the golden age of music. A civilised format from a more civilised time.
I do not own rights to video, I do not wish to monetise the video - I just want to react to it to bring entertainment and enjoyment for those watching.

The focus has always been on David and Rodger and their constant bickering both before and after Rodger left and both were truly great musicians but meanwhile Richard and Nick quietly got on with it being equally brilliant but not caring for the conflict. These guys were the musical glue that held the band together and particularly in the case of Richard Wright the classic sound of the band would not have been the same and the quality of the soundscapes sadly lacking without him. RIP indeed.
@TheMule71
@TheMule71 11 ай бұрын
@@scifimonkey3 Well really "not caring for the conflict". It wasn't David vs Roger. Roger drove off Nick first, Rick second. They all thought he was impossible to work with at some point. Roger always wanted all writing credits (to be fair, it was kinda a bad habit of the times, it happened in many bands that one member would be credited all). When Roger parted, he tried - hard - to bring the PF name with him. Now, history went another way, but from their (the band's) perspective, at the time, Roger didn't leave, he kicked David out of the band. He thought he would become Pink Floyd alone. That was his plan, let's not forget it. So first he made Nick and Rick quit, then kicked David out. When that happened, Nick and Rick, who had enough, sided with David, so it was 3 vs 1 in the battle for who was going to keep the name PF. And Roger's plan crumbled. Since then, Roger has been super bitter about not being able to take full control. He also tried his best to destroy PF multiple times. E.g. all band members, plus Alan Parson, recall Clare Torry's contribution to the great gig in the sky being a mix of multiple takes, with the band giving directions, and David even playing his guitar to illustrate their concept of "instrumental solo with human voice". It was Roger that spread the lie "it was all in one take, all improvised", to downplay the role of other members. He's being doing that constantly, even recently "re-imagining" the dark side songs; of course, in his "imagination", David's guitar solos never existed. You don't believe me? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibuGoMiKzNWVeas.html I don't remember any concert where PF downplayed the bass line in the slightest. They were always very true to the orginal. They don't live in a world where Roger was never part of the band, they didn't rewrite their music to accomodate for that fantasy. Roger literally did.

"Which ones pink" is truer than you know!! It's truer than you know because it actually happened to Rodger Waters during a meeting with a record executive! The guys piping off at how much he loves the band and their music and all that they bring to the music industry and "oh by the way which one of you guys is Pink"? That was like the final nail in a coffin when it came to how Pink Floyd members felt about record executives! I really believe if you hang in there long enough your subscriber ship will grow exponentially because you really do get it and you're able to convey what's going on in an album probably as good as anyone I've heard if not better!! Keep on building/reacting and they will come!

I knew a musician some years ago. We were talking about David Gilmore's solos. We were both struggling to describe why we thought they were so good when he said, Gilmore always knows to play the exact note that you want to hear, even though you didn't know. He was right. The way that Gilmore's solos flow from note to bended note is magical. Even with the first listen, each note feels like it belongs to you.

Richard Wright's "Part IX" composition is exquisite; I believe his work on this album was his finest. I especially like the choice made to play the piano chords under the synth melody, which gives it so much more sonic depth. Wright also makes clear that it indeed is a tribute to Syd by playing a few bars of the melody from "See Emily Play" at the end. This album is an artistic masterpiece.

Many people mistakenly think WYWH is about Syd Barrett, but in an interview Roger Waters said quite emphatically that the only song on the WYWH album that was about Syd was "Shine on you crazy diamond". He went on to say that when he wrote the lyrics to Wish You Were Here he had in mind someone close who had refused to move on in life and had been left behind. He also said that at other times it meant something else, and that some days he didn't really know what it meant himself. He deliberately made the lyrics enigmatic so that the listener could make them mean whatever they wanted them to mean, and they have become an anthem for anyone who has lost someone close to them. David Gilmour has said that he often thinks of Syd when he's performing it, even though it wasn't written about him. The opening guitar chords were composed by David Gilmour who had in mind someone listening to a poor quality radio all alone in their bedroom late at night, and upon hearing the guitar joining in himself with the crisper sound of the second guitar. Overall, a stunningly beautiful composition, both instrumentally and lyrically, and a work of complete genius. I associate it with someone very close that I lost long ago and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

I really was looking forward to your reaction to side two, Al. You did a very good job here as well. Even though the titletrack was not directly written with Syd in mind (they tried to focus on the meaning of loss in a broader sense), it is very well possible to project the lyrics on the bandmembers emotions regarding losing their friend and inspiror. David once said he could not ever perform this song without thinking of Syd. I think you are getting more comfortable with this way of reacting. It shows. Please continue and as I read requests in other comments, Animals is next, I too hope. Interesting fact: last september a new remix of that album was released: "Animals, 2018 remix". Maybe somewhere in the future a chance to put the different versions alongside each other? But the 1977 version needs to be treated with respect and therefor reacted to first.

There is a wonderfully talented Floyd tribute band based in northeastern Ohio. They go by the name "Wish You Were Here" They have a far more authentic 1970s Floyd sound then most of the more popular tribute bands. This past year they played the entire WYWH album during their two hour plus shows. In 2023 they will do the full Animals album. Only do about six concerts a year. Members all have other responsibilities but they are a treat to see. I prefer them over Brit Floyd.

There's usually more than one meaning to any Pink Floyd song. There's often a specific meaning, usually specific to the band. On this album the two main and specific meanings are to do with the music industry and of course, Syd. Their songs also have a more general meaning, addressed to the 'everyman'. For instance, the song, 'Welcome to the Machine' is specifically about the music industry but it also has that more general meaning, addressed to the 'everyman'. This meaning is to do with work, society, capitalism, corporatism, media etc. There is of course, always a third meaning, or meanings and that is the meaning of the song that is personal to the listener. Don't ever worry too much about the literal and 'correct' meaning. All meanings are 'correct'. None are absolutely correct but put them all together and you come close. It always saddens me when people argue about what the 'true', 'real' or 'correct' meaning of a piece of art. When it comes to art, all meanings are 'true', 'real' and 'correct'. That's the essence of what art is! So don't worry too much about trying to get the'right' meaning and definitely don't worry about people teling you that, 'you got it wrong'! You haven't. :)

Fantastic definition of art in the second paragraph - you hit the nail on the head and then some! I appreciate the kind words :) I agree very much on the idea of a third meaning with music though - there is always a deeper meaning that changes with each listener. Thank you again!

Nice reaction, apparently the "which ones Pink?" was a common question. In many ways this idea of the music machine was a precurser to the movement of bands setting Indie (Independant) labels years later as a means to wrest control and keep the money from the big labels. of course this concept was used in the 80s for a Kit Kat Advert (you cant sing, you cant play , you look aweful, youll go a long way). According to an interview the intro to wish you were here is someone (possibley Syd) sitting in their room turning on the wireless then jamming to a song which is being played (which is how a lot of musicians started out). The lead role in a cage can also be seen as a reference to POW films, cold comfort for change the other type of change is of course Cash in your pocket, so esentially being paid off to take your troubles elsewhere. also note that drug addiction can cause pain when coming down.

It was the first track that also introduced me to Roy Harper who was a friend and mentor of David Gilmour and whilst folk rock is not everyones cup of tea he has produced some 22 studio albums and whilst only some would fall into my brilliant category they never failed to be interesting. He is a poet/musician described by some as the UKs answer to Bob Dylan. If you fancy a taste then the albums to check IMHO would be Stormcock, Bullinamingvase or The Unknown Soldier. The first includes tracks with Jimmy page and the latter with David Gilmour and Kate Bush.

Another great reaction. The continuation of welcome to the machine into have a cigar is so masterfully done. The contrast in feel is like having a con/salesman pop out of a literal machine. Favorite lyric in Have a Cigar is "We're so happy, we can hardly count." Wish you were here, is such a great lament and while I think you're analysis is spot on, those lyrics have been reinterpreted by millions in almost as many ways. I always thought the way this album was put together, with the first parts of Shine and the last parts bookending the whole thing was also incredibly well done. A prologue and epilogue, with the story in the middle. That's my take on it anyway.

I'm subbed. Nice reaction. I've always had my own interpretations of various Pink Floyd lyrics, as do most people I guess. One which I've not heard expressed by others is the fish bowl line. I see this line two ways. Your interpretation of course comes first to mind. I see a far larger deeper one when considering the song telling the story of humanity's lack of empathy and understanding for each other and the other's situation they find themselves in (which is something Waters says about the song). So here we find that every individual's life on Earth is likened to swimming in a fish bowl (we can not escape the Earth) and, although there is much more 'ground' to cover, we end up sharing the same 'fears' in life: job security, finding love, how we deal with life's idiosyncrasies, and of course our ever approaching death. I think Water's has a great empathy for this problem that the human experience permits each of us, as is born out by his understanding - as shown in his fantastic lyrics in ALL the work they have recorded, both before and after "Dark Side' I know of one Psychology PhD thesis written on some of their works. Surely, the world over there must be a few more analysing the music and lyrical content by Pink Floyd. What a compliment that would be for your life's work!? Love your approach and conclusions Al. This is the "beautiful" album of the classic Floyd cluster and you got it very much. I must have listened to this vinyl disc over 100 times in the 70s - 90s and to revisit it through your excellent reaction has been rewarding. The scratches only help immortalise it. Only one small quibble - while I am not a fan of mind altering drugs, Syd's fall into mental illness may well have been a little different than the sort of immersion that many think. LSD is a dangerous and unpredictable mind bender that can unravel a person in one trip and doesn't rely on repeats - in fact it is less addictive than non-users think. Syd's bandmates are more sympathetic than angry in their response to the great loss and I understand it as I know people who have become "psychotic" very suddenly with only minimal bending of the acid. Thanks for the wonderful appreciation of a brilliant album.

Sorry for the late contribution, but I've only just subscribed to the channel.Your analysis of the album is very insightful, I would like to add, the album and the pathos of "wish you were here" was more than just words, the band paid Syd royalties from all the bands work as if he was still a member of the band, up until his death, this was initially the idea of David Gilmour as he was a friend of Syd's, who Syd initially recruited into the band when he was struggling to play guitar live, and David felt he would not have gotten the opportunity without Syd. He told the band he was going to give a share of his royalties to Syd and the other band members all agreed to cut him in as the 5th member of the band.

Nice reaction, liked your thought that the final part of the album might be likened to Syd's funeral, I had never considered that. Like a lot of their music, PF incorporates long intros and outros and very extended transitions in SOYCD. Aside from being so magical, these must have required painstaking experimentation and effort before, during, and after the studio work to have everything end up just as they wanted. I cringe when I consider how much of that effort might have would up on the cutting room floor if different, more conventional, production personnel had been involved. Question: Your channel is called "Al's Vinyl Collection" and yet you are reacting to music you've not heard, could you explain?

So the videos I upload once a week are me going through my Vinyl collection in Alphabetical order reviewing them - but they take a LONG time to film and edit, hence why its only once per week.
