Regular watchers will know it is the 996-generation Porsche 911 that features most on my channel, for the simple reason it is the 911 I own. I've covered many aspects of 996 Carrera ownership to date, from buying the right car, to looking after the bodywork, replacing the exhaust, or upgrading its chassis.
However, this video is arguably the most important to date: in an exclusive for KZfaq, Pinky Lai, designer of the Porsche 996, joins me for a lengthy conversation about life at Porsche before, during, and after the 996's release. Pinky's honesty and humility is evident as he opens up about what life was like at Porsche in the 1990s, how important it was to get the water-cooled 996 right in order to save the company, and how it's viewed today, 20 years on, as a modern classic.
This video interview was done and recorded via Zoom, so while the quality overall is good for something recorded over the internet, you do have to bear this in mind when watching. This is a conversation worth hearing though - far longer than my usual 9-minute, 11-second videos, I hope fellow 996 enthusiasts, like me, will be poring over every word Mr Lai says.
I hope you enjoy the chat.

Uninformed people often say that Porsche designers are lazy because a new Porsche often looks very similar to the outgoing model. Pinky Lai has just confirmed my suspicion that Porsche designers have to work a lot harder because they have to introduce identifiable changes while sticking to a long established design language. This interview is fascinating in that it reveals that designers do not work in isolation in their studios; they have to address real world issues like aerodynamics, thermodynamics, lap times and even bean counting. Thank you for giving Pinky space to talk at his own pace; the interview was both respectful and revealing.

I actually love the 996.1 headlight design, the design came 20 years early. If I am looking at that headlight today in 2020, it's absolutely beautiful. As a 911 car designer, it's so easy just to copy and change a little bit from the predecessor. Only a true revolutionary designer who has a vision dare to have any significant visual change on the 911. The Fried Eggs are actually making the front bumper a much cleaner look apart from merely being more economical to produce. As Pinky said, It's sad to see the new 911 just getting bigger and higher horsepower.

The current 992 platform is too big for my tastes. I’ve tested a GTS and though it’s an incredible car, it’s too large, too heavy, too powerful and too fast for ordinary situations. Also, I would like a manual. So I, now looking at low mileage 996 examples. They look “dinky” and so right to my eyes. I’ve not driven one yet.

Dear Pinky et al, what a great interview! And, as a 996 owner for 20 years now, I am still proud to drive exactly this 911. Not "only" that it saved Porsche, in my opinon it is a masterpiece of design as such. Just beautiful in every detail. Forget the fuzz about the headlights, they are stunning... and I mean the first version of it but with the non-orange blinkers. Everybody, look at the convex/concave curves of the headlights and the convex/convace fissure of the trunk front ("s-punch"). How this goes together is terrific and the back including moving grill and small edge is stunning. Enough said. 996 forever! Thank you and stay healthy!

Thanks for the interview. Very interesting to hear the background about the design ideas. As a 996.2 owner and having read some about the design process it was so much better to hear from the designer himself. Loved the part about each newer generation losing some of the original feel. The 996 is becoming more connected to the original driving experience of the 911 with each subsequent generation. If you can't get past the headlamps, then you're missing out on something special.

Looks like Pinky clearly enjoyed talking about the development of the 996 and how revolutionary it was at the time. I think him and the team really did a great job leaving a legacy at Porsche and one that lives to this day!, "the most BANG for the buck". That legend still stands true today with the 996 prices. Porsche is once again at a revolutionary period with the advent of electrification into the 911. Great video lee

I have a 996.1 C4 Aerokit and owned a 986 2.5, both great cars. The following generations did better them in many ways, but there's a charm to the 996 in the way there's a charm to the earlier air cooled stuff, eventually people looking for a more analogue experience will realise the 996 offers a much more connected, vintage and analogue driving experience than it's successors do. Great cars.

Thank you so much for this, Lee! I am an avid Porsche fan, and have been since I was a child when the 996/986 came out. This generation is what sparked my fascination with the brand, and the 996 Turbo was the poster I hung up in my bedroom as a kid! To me, Pinky Lai is a true hero in the automotive design world. Being able to hear his stories of the design process during this intense period at Porsche was incredible. These types of stories are so compelling, and it goes to show how central design is to the entire development process of the vehicle. Pinky pushed for the core essence of the 996 design as we know it to shine throughout the entire development process, and what a story he has. He left the world with a vehicle that forever moved automotive design forward, not to mention the Porsche brand as a whole!

Lee, what a fantastic interview! Hearing the “reasons” for the design and the internal company forces that also pushed the design, coming directly from the designer was incredible. Maybe, this could become a periodic feature of your channel..........”The Designer Series”, having the actual designers for each of the models being interviewed really would provide incredible background and content. And, of course, now that the 911 is becoming larger and more of a grand touring machine, understanding the designer’s reason for that element would be very interesting. Great job!

Absolutely BRILL Lee and thank you!! This film shows the respect you've earned in the Porsche world that Pinky happily gave you his time 👍🏻 To a casual observer, that could have been an interview with a Ridley Scott or other leading creative figurehead in other fields and the art, engineering, budget and design elements of Pinky's answers could apply equally to cinematic and other massively dynamic, expensive and creative things. On the 996 itself tack, I bought a 996 C4S last year, having test driven a 997 C2S immediately before and then jumped into the 996. I was sold on the C4S by the time we got out of the car park, the whole feel was just sooooo right and felt how I'd always imagined a Porsche would feel, purposeful and pretty raw. I see that now people are talking up the 997 as the next modern classic, but other than the shape of the headlights, my personal view is the 996 is actually the last of the aircooled based design lines, including the largely black interior, which I can well believe may have been originally destined for the 993. Thanks Lee, great channel and your how to buy a 996 video really helped me last year :)

I love my 1999 (March 1998 build) 996. C2 manual coupe. I have owned it over 3 years and have had it at Road Atlanta several times. I think the people who put it down have never driven one. They see pictures with the GT1 headlights and say "It's not a real 911!". The reality is it's a blast to drive. The 997.1 is essentially the same car, including the M96/M97 engine, yet they sell for 15k more. The 996 is a bargain.

I love the 996... It is a top design and will be for all time... it is so 90’s and embodies all things cool at that time. As nice as the proceeding models are, they just don’t have the charm of 996. The packaging is spot on too, small but was the first 911 I sat in that the driving position was on the money ! purists generally equal snobs and they brow beat on us 996 owners... To me the 996 is the last true 911 to the old school philosophy, a true sports car looking to future and evolving. The 997.1 was the beginning of the end for the 911 being a sports car they compromised the aerodynamics by reverting to the round headlights and the body in general all in order to look back to the past, so much so a 997.1 is slower than a 996.2 and the only way they were able to get round this was putting a bigger engine in the S models to compensate, changed the steering rack to give less feedback. the 997.2 onwards just became grand tourers, no longer sports cars. Just look at the forums, the 996 guys talk about their suspension setups, optimal tyres ect while the 991 guys are contemplating if their car has enough leather and if they need deviated stitching.

Thank you for this wonderful insight into my 996! I can’t believe you made this interview happen all on your own. You asked the right questions, stayed quiet at the right times, and edited it very well. You’ve added so much to the 996 historical record. Thank you! Holy shit ... just realized he calls it a “nine nineTY-six” ... have the rest of us been doing it wrong all this time? What are you gonna do next, post a video of Dr. Ferdinand referring to his beloved “ninety-one one?” 😎

Great video. We need more like it. No PR restrictions, just tell it like it was. Very refreshing. I got the feeling Pinky was happy to chat further. Did you run out of questions? 😆 Can you please ask him about the interior styling next time? The car exterior has aged well after 20 years but the interior much less so I think. It would also good to get his thoughts on the quality aspect. The plastics are terrible! Great work mate.
@clammy77
@clammy77 4 жыл бұрын
I think the interior actually aged quite well. Have you tried carbon fiber interior trims? www.macarbon.com/images/stories/virtuemart/product/resized/986_996_Center_C_51acea57c4319_350x350.jpg I think the 996 interior design is more emotional than the newer porsches, thus pretty cool!
@MAXREVS
@MAXREVS 4 жыл бұрын
@YH If you check, Pinky Lai was only responsible for the exterior design. A completely separate designer and design team managed the interior. Pinky had no involvement in the interior design.

What a cool guy this was a fantastic interview and he had some challenging time with the budget and made a lovely 911. This was the best episode hope you do some more with the Porsche people keep up the good work👍 I am still dreaming of owning a Porsche 911 ,996 ,997 I have never driven one but I buy all the magazines So I hope one day I will soon 🤞

It also sounded like his design WAS chosen because of it being so dramatically different than previous generations. The management knew they needed a long shot. To break out of the mold and take a chance. To bring the car into the future. And it did. They chose his design out of several others. The current generation of 911 is visually VERY similar to this 996 as opposed to looking like the pre 996 models. This car did in fact take 911 into the future and still to this day to anyone not very familiar with the 911 they might think the 996 is a current model. There is no mistaking a pre 996 model for a current one, even to the general public. I am not saying I don't like the earlier models too.
