I’m glad he’s progressing in the proper direction, but that’s correct and why liberty can become a false god and even an absurdity when taken beyond the proper boundaries set by God. What irks me is that many libertarians love the Founding Fathers, but the Founding Fathers near-universally believed in the death penalty for things like abortion and sodomy, their state laws reflected that. They also had ultra stringent laws on divorce. Many things libertarians and liberty movement folks champion today would have been anathema and abhorred by their heroes.

he's trying to hold two goods (freedom of choice and the right choice) at the same time. I applaud JP’s willingness to voice a viewpoint that he must know Matt’s audience would disagree with. It’s a completely nonsensical position, however. We wouldn’t apply that logic to any other horrendous crime. We don’t tell rapists that it’s evil but we respect their right to do it. We also wouldn’t say the same to a mother who murders her two year old. He’s applying the law unequally, which tells me that he doesn’t view unborn life as being on same level as the life of a two year old, for instance.

Back in the day, the way I understood "my body my choice" was in reference to what the woman's body would go through during pregnancy and childbirth. The pain of childbirth is no joke. My first child felt like I was being tortured because he was face up and his head was pressing on my spine. Demerol did absolutely nothing for the pain and it went on for 8 hours. My second child came very quickly, and I gave birth in the ER without any medication, but my placenta didn't come out so the doctor after all that childbirth pain, looked me in the eye and said "Ok, this is going to hurt!" then he reached inside and ripped it out. If he hadn't done that, I would have hemorrhaged to death. BTW, both of my sons were wanted. I do think abortion is evil in most cases but at the same time, it seems strange to me to force a person to give birth. Especially if they are very young. Either way it's a terrible situation.

The final straw that put me on the "absolutely 100% against" (I used to fall for the "What about 'Rp" cases" argument") is actually reading the medical definition. I had listened to someone who was explaining the actual definition and pointing out that it mandated the goal be to end the life of the baby in every instance. If the baby is being medically removed with the intent to save its life or if it dies on accident it isn't an abortion. So, even in horrible cases where the mother is put in a predicament against her will I'm not really against removing the baby but the goal should be to remove it and do everything possible to help both live. Even in circumstances where the baby is "threatening the mothers life" if there is an operation with a lottery winners chance that the baby can be pulled out and put on life support to free the mothers body from the medical threat that's the better option. In that hypothetical many of the younger babies may not survive due to medical complications but that is just a consequence of complicated medical procedure. There would never be an abortion again in the medical field and women would still have an option to remove the baby. The intent simply has to be to save both lives.

Unless I'm completely misunderstanding this, he's basically saying, "Abortion is a horrendous evil, but I still think it should be legal." If that is what he is saying, I hope this guy's Protestant, but I wouldn't think I would have to explain this even to a Protestant. Yes, not all moral evils should be illegal. Nine-year-olds might shirk school or chores, which is wrong, but I don't think they should go to prison. However, even from a libertarian perspective, it goes against the "anti-aggression principle" (I don't agree with that principle, but I'm going by the loosest example possible outside of anarchy). By this "freedom" to end a child's life, you are denying a child's right to live. As a nation founded on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (in that order), there is no "right" to an abortion, or else we would also have to legalize infanticide and the systematic murder of all the mentally or intellectually handicapped.

The fact that JP said that abortion is evil, but that he believes in liberty, and that women should have the right to choose implies, to me that he is libertarian. The hint is when he mentioned, “group think conservatives.” If one looks up the definition of libertarian, it says, “relating to or denoting a political philosophy that advocates only minimal state intervention in the free market and the private lives of citizens.” Notice no state interference in the private lives of citizens. True Christians believe that abortion should be outlawed, but libertarians believe in complete liberty and free will and think that citizens, not the government, should have the right to choose their destiny. So I can see that it is pretty easy to ridicule JP's position here as untenable, but the explanation is pretty simple. He sees liberty as the highest good, and other goods are subordinate to it, such as the right to life. To some extent it makes sense: for example, you could otherwise make a utilitarian argument for robbing a rich person in order to help many poor people stave off hunger. I would posit though that life is much messier than that, and you can't always put goods into a clear hierarchy as it inevitably leads to contradictions. You have to be willing to make judgments and take the heat for supposed "hypocrisy". In the case of abortion the life of the unborn is clearly and obviously more important than the liberty "lost" by the parent.

We own a rooster who has a bad habit of chasing foxes so we keep him safe so he doesn't hurt himself. Yet, "Nugget" the rooster has more common sense and intelligence than this hippie. In the old days, they used to call people like him simpletons. Family members loved them, but they would never allow them to speak publicly ^^^ for this exact reason or shall I say anti-reason? 😕

J.P. there is no freedom to do evil. True freedom is to be able to do good. Doing evil is slavery. Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin." There's so many people being killed, why? Because their being told that life has no value! Do you value life? Give the baby a chance. Do to others as you would have them do to you. Matthew 7:12 If the tables were turned would it have been okay for your baby to abort you? Instead repent/believe in God's son Jesus, he loves you and can change your heart.

So it's ALWAYS wrong to kill an innocent human? Really? In Texas some years ago, a young man was killed because he was in someone's yard and didn't understand the word "freeze". The homeowner shot and killed him. But he was innocent! Did the homeowner go to jail? No! Why not? Because he felt threatened. He was able to take an innocent life because he did not know if the young man would harm him. Abortion laws say that you must be on the verge of death before you can get an abortion to save your life. But all fetuses are a threat. They do kill and maim. If we used the same criteria as the homeowner, abortions would be legal. If someone is on your property or in your body, and poses a possible threat, you have the right to remove them. Do not say "but you invited them in". If you were using birth control, you did not invite them! Another example: If your brain doesn't work, you are declared "brain dead" even if your heart can still pump and the rest of your body is alive. But you are still an innocent human being! So if it is illegal to kill a brainless human embryo, why isn't illegal to kill a brainless grown human?

Hmm, JP's view is at least... confusing, to call it lightly. Hard to understand it differently than "even if an action is evil, it should be allowed (meaning: legal, not prosecuted?), because it's a free act". In such case, law would be completely pointless, and it would mean that only these, who are strong enough, could defend themselves, and weak would perish. I assume this opinion is about law, because outside of some regulations we could prevent an action only by incapacitating or immobilizing someone, "just in case", and I think it's obviously absurd. Even with law prohibiting murder, one can still in his/her freedom trespass it and commit a murder - but has to deal with the consequences from the society (or flee from it). I agree that freedom is a great value, and it's universal - we can't put an evil-doer's freedom above victim's freedom, and evil acts directly or indirectly hinder victim's freedom. I think John Paul II summed it nicely: freedom of a person ends where it meets another person's freedom.

That's exactly the argument JP makes on his own channel. Abortion is evil and those who have them will be judged by God, but like many other forms of evil, people should be free to choose it. We know from nations where abortion is illegal that there are many horrific consequences for women (prison sentences, deaths, maiming, etc). The way to end abortion is through changing hearts and minds, not laws.

@@colmwhateveryoulike3240 I see your point and understand its merits. I guess, for most, the argument for legality rests on the unique biological nature of pregnancy and the result in nations where it has been outlawed. Women who are desperate to end their pregnancies will resort to horrific means if abortion is not legal. If we are serious about being pro-life, we MUST make the true nature of the baby real to desperate women (that this is an actual human being and not a clump of cells), and we have to assure them that their children will have decent lives whether they choose to raise them or give them up for adoption. No mother wants to give birth to a child who is condemned to a life of poverty and who condemns her to that life as well.

Typical worship of “liberty” as the most important moral good. Many such cases. People like this find it hard to reason themselves out of things like the “liberty” to sell yourself into slavery. I know because I was in libertarian political circles when I was younger, and this was a lively debate. Didn’t occur to many of us to reevaluate our concept of liberty, or its elevation above every other virtue.

I've came to the crossroads of abortion in my life. While I don't judge women who have had an abortion unless it's used often as a form of birth control. I've known women who do that. I believe in it in the cases of rape and endangerment of the mothers life. I've seen very scared young girls at the hospital for an abortion. And I get it. They are terrified either way. I didn't allow my ex to push me into the procedure. And I'm very happy for it. But for many young women who think that abortion is the answer to your problems, please rethink it. You will have to live with that decision (emotionally) for the rest of your life. And then there's the physical complications. One of the girls I worked with at the hospital had an abortion when she was young. She had a very hard time conceiving and had lost at least five children. It was all due to complications of the abortion. She almost died each time she was pregnant. And don't think that she didn't think about and grieve that child she aborted. It stayed with her the rest of her life. There are emotional consequences that they don't tell women about.

So some forms of murder should be legal? That is what JP is saying. I appreciate JP for what he does, but I do think he has more reflection to do on this area. If he truly believes that human equality exists and that it applies to the pre-born child (which he seems to) then what about the fetus's freedom to grow up? If it is about bodily autonomy, what about the pre-born child's own bodily autonomy? Don't they have a right to bodily integrity and to be protected from instruments that dismember them? I think some people think abortion is just "not helping" and thus within one's freedom to do. "Oh I'm just not using my body to help this little human". However, doing an abortion is not like "not donating an organ". It is more like going to sick person and instead of not giving an organ you stab them to death! Abortion is not "not helping" it is killing and the vast majority of abortions are very direct and intentional acts of killing. Can you kill a child who wanders into your home? No. Can you abandon, nevermind kill a lost child you find on a hike in the forest? No. Your duty in both cases is at minimum to not kill, but almost surely to provide care for those children until you can safely transfer care to another adult. In the case of pregnancy that transfer of care would be after birth. The lives of born children take precedent over our wants, our convenience, and sometimes even our bodies (ask the African mom who has to walk 10 miles a day to get water for her kids. Can she just refuse to do such arduous labor because "my body"? No!). That same priority of the right to life we extend to born children should apply to pre-born children, equally.

Hopefully your guest is a work in progress... Hopefully, he will come to the same conclusion as Matt, which is: A human being is a human being is a human being. If it is wrong to kill a human being, circumstance is not relevant. Always wrong. Society has given the name of "the act of killing a human being": "murder." Killing a baby in the womb is the moral equivalent of killing a baby outside the womb (the womb being a minor detail, which it is, since the status of the "life" (a verifiable fact) either way is "human", i.e. made in God's image and likeness). Murder being a very grave social and moral ill, should not be made legal "depending on circumstance". Prayers for your guest to arrive at that natural and logical position (especially since he has influence, since he has followers).

I disagree with the guest and I'm definitely pro life but to be fair to his argument, I think most of us would agree that simply being immoral or hurting ppl shouldn't always define what is legal and illegal. For example homosexual acts and infidelity are both immoral and the latter certainly harms people grievously, you might go so far as to say they're evil actions, but most of us think that the GOVERNMENT shouldn't punish ppl for committing them. Why is abortion different? Thoughts?

A fetus may be a human being, but so is the woman who's life and very flesh, metabolism, even longevity and future fertility is unpredictably altered if not hobbled by carrying to term. The societal cost of allowing the government to force the unwilling to become mothers is high enough to be self-defeating; if you devote finite resources to prosecute doctors and invade the medical privacy of women seeking to terminate illegally, further ruining the already hard-knock life of the resulting infant, short-staffing hospitals/ob-gyn clinics, literally breeding mental illness into poorer communities, while breeding-out parental inclinations, you compound the problem while exhausting said resources. Kind of like the War On Drugs, it's tyranny in the name of futility; evils nearly as great as the taking of human life, are proliferated through trying to force every last would-be human life to begin at the cost of people's bodily autonomy. Criminal law is simply not the tool for this job. That said, late term abortions and the commodification of aborted fetal tissue are the greater evil and urgently need to be stopped. A broader culture that generally frowns upon abortion doesn't necessarily have to derive from litigation altogether banning it, but won't necessarily arise from it either. A self-perpetuating criminal underclass will. At one level or other, a grim compromise seems to be unavoidable on this issue no matter what.
@monicalillis3294

You can't compromise with evil. Abortion is evil. Killing an unborn child in it's mother's womb. You can't get more evil depraved and wicked. A crime against humanity. How twisted we have become we can't even see that. The womb was designed for the unborn child. It can't be anywhere else can it ? You were once that embryo/fetus, deserving respect and protection. No one asked to be conceived. We deserve our lives to be recognized and protected by law. This is the first right. The right to life, without which, other rights don't matter.
