I smoked my first pipe at age 15. The best pipe tobacco I have ever smoked was called Eclair, from the Tobak Shack in Eagan Minnesota. It was rare I had tongue bite after smoking this tobacco.

I've smoked a pipe for 48 years and so far not had any health issues. But one thing I do which my dentist approves of is have warm salt water (sea salt) mouth washes a few times a week. It keeps the inside of the mouth healthy and soothed. The recipe is a teaspoon of sea salt (no chemical additives) in half a pint of warm water - hold in mouth for a minute, release and repeat. It also keeps bacteria in the mouth down.

@@driftwood1906 Sir I have a question. I smoke pipe for several years now and recently switched to without filters. Much better for me. Anyways Always after smoking pipe and especially cigar I have few days weird feeling in my mouth, tongue ,throat and in my lungs. I dont inhale. How is this possible?
@driftwood1906
@driftwood1906 12 күн бұрын
@@sezerkasoglu9911 I think that is just inevitable as there is always going to be some coating of the mouth and throat and even burning by hot smoke, but it is that taste that is sought. In the 19th century it is reported that some wealthy pipe smokers would use servants to smoke the majority of the bowl until they got down to the last part which is called the 'Dottle' because it had the strongest taste and lasting flavour. Personally, I sometimes find that bit can give me hiccups because it is so strong.

Great video. I struggle with whether or not to continue this enjoyment at time. Only started in my mid-40s 2-3 years ago. The sad fact is, lots of people who do all the health and fitness and diet stuff very strictly also die young from diseases and cancers. If it’s not tobacco, it’s pesticides, polluted water supplies, plastics, car emissions, mosquito bites, car wrecks and on and on. I don’t believe God will allow us to figure it all out. It is appointed for man once to die, then judgement. Everyone is going to die, period, and few live to 90 or over. Our society seems to think if you do everything just right, you won’t have sickness and death but that just isn’t the case. So, enjoy things in a balanced way and stay close to the Maker and Judge. I think that’s the best anyone can do.

You need to look at a broader picture bro. Life expectancy had been and still increasing for both the industrialized world and third world. Despite the cigarette cancer epic, the mistake of nutrition mis guidance of trans fat and saturated fat in the 70s and 80s. My point is what the use of living 3 years longer if you need to keep a super restricted life style for 40 years. Take a look at Keith, yes, Keith Richards, he is a happy man.

Yeah lots of people are completely obsessive about their hobbies. When they drink it's everyday. When they smoke it's many times a day. When they drink coffee it's every few hours. When they play video games it's every days multiple hours. And then they complain about being diseased. Some people are unlucky but most are simply unreasonable.

Just like coffe, cola, fried food or even water it is better to consume a reaonable quantity. If you drink too much water you will die. I smoke a pipe 5 minutes per day and I don't actually fully light it.

My advice to anyone would be to practice some form of moderation that you are comfortable with. Control of exposure/frequency is the number one tool you have to reduce your risk to a point that you are comfortable with, and that goes for anything in life. Take driving, for example. An American has about a 1 in 107 chance of dying in a car accident in their lifetime. That's an average - if you drive more than the average person, more at night, more in busy areas, etc, then your risk is higher. In some cases, it's necessary to drive to get to work, or to get basic groceries, or whatever. But in many cases, we take drives which are "non-essential". You might take a drive out to a farm to pick berries, or you might drive to go to a concert or a sporting event. Or you might take a short drive to get some ice cream. These are "non-essential" activities which, overall, greatly increase your risk of death or injury compared to if you just stayed at home. Most of us think that the benefits outweigh the increased risk in these cases. But if you aren't personally comfortable with those risks, then you might try to avoid driving as much as possible. We all have to make a personal assessment that we are comfortable with.

Excellent interview! I have only been smoking pipes for about 3 years and only recently have I picked up a “routine” I guess you could say. I will normally have a bowl in the mornings with coffee on my days off and then a bowl after dinner every day with the very rare midday chooch. I think moderation, inhale control, and oral care is about all we can do as far as “healthy smoking” goes. Happy smokes YTPC!

The other factors I would like to see if studied. Is life style, how active were the smokers in the studied compared to the non-smoking, Diets, work environments and so on. I'm not naive enogh to believe smoking is healthy, but every smoker I've known including chain smokers have lived into 80's. Or if they died earlier the 2 foot long subs for lunch then Macd's supper and being at least 200 lbs over weight definitely didn't help. Or like my uncle who's a welder from before ventilation was a concern 🙄. My point being most smokers i know tend to live a hard life so im sure that doesn't help either. Either way I'm still going to enjoy my pipe 😉 Thanks for the great video!! Cheers 🍻

This was a GREAT interview, Wilson! I am looking forward to more. I hope you touch on concomitant use of alcohol and tobacco in your interview with the dentist. The use of one or the other is SIGNIFICANTLY LESS risky, in regard to our health, than the combination of the two. I have seen reports that state we are at SIXTY times greater risk for oral cancer with that combination than if we only use those substances individually! Thanks, Cliff

Is the risk limited if we have both separately or only if at the same time?
@haselstrauch1688
@haselstrauch1688 Жыл бұрын
@@RenaissanceEarCandy it is much more dangerous if you combine it, because the alcohol destroys your natural barrier of the mucosa membrane, through which the harmful substances of the tobacco can penetrate worse. If you keep some time between drinking and smoking it should be way better, but best is to reduce drug consumption to one of these, as both can higher your risk of cancer. I personaly dont like alcohol anyway, so thats no problem for me. You just have to consider that everytime you smoke or drink alcohol, you will damage you cells (like with many other things, too). Normally they can regenerate easily, but the more often you do it, the higher is your chance of becoming cancer of one of these damaged cells. Although you have the chance to get cancer from only smoking one time, the risk isnt too high, if you dont smoke more than a pipe every 2-3 days. If you want to reduce your risk any further, you could also use 9mm charcoal filters, which filter a good ammount of nicotine and other harmful substances out of the tabacco. They also reduce tongue bite.

Be also interesting to know if family history of oral or digestive tract cancer should weigh into one's decision to take up or continue the hobby. I wrestle with that as my grandfather, a huge pipe smoker, died of stomach and esophageal cancer. Cousin died of it too. Don't know if she had a history of smoking. Great video. Here's some unsolicited advice. When doing a stream with an iffy connection, try to avoid the small utterances we use in normal conversations to let others know we're interested in what they're saying like "Oh" and "absolutely" and stuff like that. It can create an interruption through the connection and break the thought concentration of the person you're talking to. or make them think you've begun speaking so they stop. Just stay silent until they completely finish a thought then jump in when you hear a bit of dead air. I think that would make the conversation a bit smoother. But otherwise great job and entertaining video. Cheers.

@robf8023

@@BrunoModigliani Not trying to be argumentative brother but wanted to give a different perspective. Most pipe tobacco blends both aromatic and non have a casing. The difference being that aromatics are blended and cased to form a specific non-tobacco flavor. Non-aromatics have casings to enhance either some of the tobaccos in the blend or all. Those are generally things like honey that offer a sweetness but are not so dominant that it takes over and changes the goal of the blend. I'd also add that pipe tobacco casings are food grade additives. I'd recommend looking up how cigarettes are made on youtube. It is hardly even tobacco in my opinion. Literally the first step is soaking the tobacco to essentially remove it's substance. That end product juice is then reduced to create a stronger concoction, chemicals added etc.

I appreciate physician input. But the truth is that there hasn't been extensive research into pipe or cigar effects on the body. They didn't have the studies even thirty some years ago when the surgeon general at the time had to admit that they didn't know. There has been nothing that I have seen to convince me that there is any higher risk of cancer from pipe tobacco then breathing in the fumes and exhaust of spent gasoline that lingers in the air or from the genetically modified products and chemicals found in our food.

You can google it, I cannot paste link here because KZfaq will delete my comment. 2. What about smoking pipe with activated carbon filter in it?? Makes any difference? Because what i rode is, that activated carbon filters harmful substances from smoke and about 80% of nicotine!

I don't doubt that one cigar contains as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, but one must also consider how much nicotine is absorbed. Cigarettes have an average of about 8 milligrams (mg) of nicotine, but only deliver about 1 to 2 mg of nicotine. Many popular brands of larger cigars have between 100 and 200 mg, or even as many as 444 mg of nicotine. But how much of the nicotine from a cigar is absorbed/delivered when one does not inhale? All I know is still more than a pipe. Not inhaling while smoking pipe tobacco is the method of smoking with the least risk to my knowledge.

This is late for the topic, but I would suggest looking up, online, "in defense of smokers". There has been so many fraudulent studies on smoking that this might clear the air. WHO found, in an enormous study, that smoking did not cause lung cancer. The particulars are very interesting. Keep in mind that anti smoking groups have ignored or fabricated much of their "facts" and they are paid to find smoking kills everyone including second had smoke breathers. It is all false info but I urge all to study this issue.
