Flying into a Bravo airport can be incredibly daunting and scary to GA pilots who aren't used to it. In this video, you'll see there really isn't anything to it. We depart Monument Valley, Utah, get fuel in Moab, then proceed Northwest VFR into the Salt Lake City Bravo Airspace.

As a student pilot, it was a fun challenge to copy down the Bravo ATC instructions and repeat back to them right along with you. I flew in a Cherokee 140 long ago with a college buddy, taking the controls for about 10 minutes. It flew effortlessly. I've only trained in a 2003 C172 SP which is excellent but Miles's Cherokee 180 seems like an excellent choice.

I flew to Utah 3 times last year in my 1965 Piper 180 from Sugar land Tx. But opted to land at KSPK . Spanish Fort really really friendly. Saved a bunch of money in tie down and Fuel cost.

Good stuff. Currently a student pilot based at KSLC and you're spot on with stating how GA friendly the place is. Getting used to all the radio calls was definitely daunting at first but it definitely gets easier with each lesson.

Terrific video. Very instructional for someone with 170 hours who flies in the West, like me. I got my private in Provo and my instructor had us do one landing in SLC. We did it in a 152 at about midnight, to avoid major traffic. What a thrill! I almost felt we could have easily landed the 152 sideways on the runway, the scale of everything is so much larger!

Getting in and out of SLC isn't bad at all even at peak hours once you learn the procedures. Quite a few GA folks are actually based there, so they're used to us. Mainly they're trying to make sure you're clear of the instrument approaches for 34L/34R. If you aren't sure about anything, the controllers are great; keep calm, ask for help, and they'll walk you through it. Coming up from Provo if the winds favor 35 they'll have you follow I-15 typically around 6000, left near I-80 and then right base for 35. If it's busy expect a hold making left turns just east of the field following I-15 north and Redwood Rd south, they'll step you down in 500 foot increments for sequencing. For 17 it's similar, but the racetrack might be in the opposite direction. For departures southbound they'll give you an altitude and have you fly west to I-15 and follow it. Westbound, you're looking at either the I-80 transition (crossing underneath the jet approaches) or the "barn" transition over top of the two passenger runways and northwest toward a red-roofed barn on Antelope Island. Both are on the terminal area chart.

Love the controllers at KSLC, they have always been great the few times I have flown into there. From the video clip, it looks like you visited the High West saloon in Park City. If you are ever back this way, visit the actual distillery near Wanship, especially for the tour and Sunday brunch. Great videos!

Nice flying. Nice plane. Nice video. I've flown in the vicinity of Bravo airspace (KADS, KBFI, KRNT, KSQL) but have never been cleared in to it. Boise was my base for the eclipse in 2017 - hotel in Boise, observed from Weiser. I ended up driving since I only got my plane back from her annual two days before.

I landed on the long runway (12,700) at Lincoln Ne back in August. The FBO was at the other end of the runway and the tower controller cleared me to land long. I landed about 9,000' down the runway. It was strange letting that much runway pass under me. I was glad to be there after leaving the FL Panhandle that morning in our club's 182.

That fire is normal for this region, though we do appreciate your report. The fire department will send a bird out to look at it, but they're most likely going to leave it alone and post signs on the freeway for drivers not to report it. It's awesome to see you reporting it to flight services though. I landed on that same runway just a few weeks ago. I was flying over Provo when you passed through and heard you on approach. Wanted to say hi but I was busy.

I was delivering a new PA-18 Super Cub to the Piper dealer on the main airport in marginal VFR conditions, low scattered clouds and when I called approach at 25 out, it turned out that there was no modulation on the transmitter. I could hear them but all they could hear was key clicks but no voice. Rather than working me in, they sent me to High West. I landed there, tied it down and called the dealer who said he'd pick it up from there. I heard later that the pilot who went after it managed to ground loop and put it on its back in the middle of 34R.

Advice for learning communication skills.. Go out and buy a small handheld aviation radio. Search for tower and approach control facilities. Listen and visualize where the aircraft is and direction heading. It helps so much to understand the process along with proper radio phraseology.

Also, liveATC.net allows you to listen to ATC at airports like KATL, KJFK, KORD, and etc. Pretty easy to use. And it's free.

That’s a very familiar valley. Even though I have landed at almost every airport within 30 miles of salt lake I haven’t actually put SLC in my logbook. I do have to wonder if it meant anything at all to you when they used Redwood Road as a landmark.

In Canada, as soon as you see a forest fire it's an automatic Class F restricted airspace 5 miles to 3000 regardless if it is on NOTAM or not. Interesting how the US uses TFR instead. Do you guys have class F airspace? Professional communications will always help you along.

This is something that’s impossible in Germany (more or less). The big airports like Frankfurt and Munich are PPR for aircraft below 2t and if you even try to apply it will be declined outright. Some airports like Hamburg and Berlin-Schönefeld are possible to land at but ridiculous expensive so it’s rarely ever worth it.

A bit of advise for operating within Charlie & Bravo airspace, keep the radio calls to a minimum & use as few words as possible. When the airspace is busy, short calls help free up the radio waves, plus it helps everyone in the area know your understanding of ATC requests along with your intended course of action. When you're flying and everything assholes & elbows you done want to waste brain power listening to a conversation on the radio. You will also come across more professional.
