I did lots of time in a Seneca II and IV. The II was so underpowered, you would have to plan something like 3-5000' (depending on load and anti-ice) in case of engine failure, so that is not an aircraft you would take over high ground! The IV (turbo-supercharged) was much more accomplished and powerful, but obviously needed much more careful engine management and could easily turn on its back at blue line speed with no or incorrect rudder and an engine failure.

Agreed, visibility is a real issue with the Seneca. Even here in the flight simulation world, that I take very seriously. Whether it be X plane or Microsoft flight simulator platforms, the Seneca just is very difficult to see out of and it sits in my virtual hanger unused, in both platforms. I agree with everybody else, The Baron, is the better twin, If you are talking about the 58 platform however, if you're speaking just to the three mentioned in the video, I would go with the 310R. Don't know much about the performance of the Baron 55 versus 310R and I have flown only 310R & Seneca In the simulator. And I can only speak from a flight simulation pilot experience, but the Baron 58P (Pressurized) by Black Square development group is an awesome aircraft. It is fast (245 knots ) GS and carries good flight loads to various destinations provided by various economy modules that are available to you In the flight simulation world. Providing us pilots. with functionality. to bring us closer to the real thing. PS: I sound like a "SHILL" for Black Square hehe, Oh well No Apologies here. My thoughts. Cheers Dion.

Thanks for sharing! 55 Baron and 310R have little overlap. 310R is in league with 58 Baron. 310R even has a higher MTOW than 58 Baron. The share a landing weight.

I'm a Az-Truck owner. Where do you hanger your plane? Kissimmee is on the lower end at $650/month. Got to argue with your overhaul quote. Granted my TIO-540s have more horses, but $32,000 for overhaul is half what I'm quoted. Annual is high unless you're guessing at what broke. Lastly, what are you using for price/gallon of fuel and your way of guessing annual maintenance? All that said, I wish I had looked for one of these. My Aztec F Turbo has long range tanks and is a constant W&B issue. Have to keep the bladders full to prevent dry rot, but can't carry more than two people and a dog without draining fuel. Seneca III gives more speed than the Aztec and burns less.

Apparently, none of the commenters on this video actually have ever owned a Seneca. I have owned a 1978 II model since 2002. I can promise you the hourly costs are WAY higher than listed here. For example, The last time I replaced an engine, (in 2007) the total cost was $44,000.00. That was $32,000 to Western Skyways and $12,000 to Alaskan Aircraft Engines for the installation. The installation costs included all the necessary new parts. At this time, the costs are WAY higher. So each engine replacement would come in closer to $60K. For two engines, that is 120K. That works out to $67.00/hr. Of course, that does not include any reserves for the props, or other major maintenance. The fuel is WAY too low also. At 24 GPH, with a cost of $6.50/gallon, you are looking at close to $160.00 / hour. Also, it is not unusual to spent 20K on an annual inspection and repair. It is beyond unbelievable how many issues that often need to be addressed. A 6K annual would be on the low end, after an extensive annual the prior year, for instance. Flying a Seneca is not a low-cost activity.

can you explain why more modern planes have a worse useful load? the piper seneca is a great example. There are versions of the Seneca with an 1800lb useful load, but the modern ones max out at 1331lbs. many nice ones only have 1100lbs useful load. is it because the avionics get heavier as they advance in technology? 1100lbs useful load is nothing for a 6 seater. full tanks will leave you only 380lbs payload. six 170lb passengers leave you less than 100lbs of fuel. Whats the point of it even being a 6 seater at that point? even the old planes with FIKI have better loads. why do companies make these new planes with such a low useful load? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
@CompleteWalkaround
@CompleteWalkaround Жыл бұрын
Hi Gene, It's a good question. The simplest answer, imo, is that over the years models tend to have things added, and very rarely taken away.Those additions come big and small. The large items include, like you mentioned, de-ice equipment. Even that started small. Boots for example. Then came heated props, heated and alcohol windscreens, automatic ice detection. Heavy air conditioners became popular. Electronic instruments themselves are mostly light, but many come with heavy backup batteries. Though these do usually allow removing vacuum pumps. For small changes, just like with cars, the salesmen liked to have new things to talk about with each model year. So they added cup holders, leather seats, shoulder harnesses. sound proofing, more vents, more headset jacks, more wires, thicker glass. etc etc. Adds up. Also, manufacturers would try to correct for common issues/failures. Bonanza's v-tail was beefed up for example, after early models had failures. Finally, there doesn't seem to have been any reason for these companies not to do it. From what I understand, most of these planes were being bought and flown by well- to-do business people and professionals who didn't care about 1800lbs useful load. Remember when piper was making and selling senecas in the 70s and 80s, they were focused on that guy, not the family of 5 who wanted to eventually buy it 40 years later :)
