Pipe smoking has helped keep me sane for decades. Tobacco pipes are essentially therapists you carry in your pocket. I don't always have stress or problems, but when I do, I may puff a pipe. Or if I know someone who is stressed out or going through something, and they show any interest in pipes, I offer them a free pipe and show them how to use it for comfort, peace, and focus. The REAL reason why pipe smoking is so powerful.

My grandad was a retired Marine and lived to 93, smoking a pipe almost 50 years of that. As his health began to fail, my mom threw out his pipe hoping that would help. Well it didn't and it was obvious to everyone that he was more aggravated and grouchy without it. So she started buying him cigars which filled the gap somewhat. I did some research because I'm not a pipe smoker and found him a decent pipe for Christmas last year. He passed just days before I could give it to him. So now it's my pipe. Guess that's a good enough first pipe. I got some Cult Blood Red Moon because his pipe always smelled a bit like cherries. I wish I had gotten him to teach me and learned what his favorite tobacco had been. Thank you for the lesson.

100% This is exactly why i started myself. I always saw the men who smoke in a cigar shop ( or out in public) NEVER have their phones in their hands. They enjoy the quality of the moment. Something I needed in my life. I do the same at bars. I leave my phone in the car. We need the small moments again to think freely.

utube I smoke mine out of carved basalt American Indian pipe that has been in the family five generation now. No bullshit my gramps gave it to me so did his and his. I don't think it was ever meant for tobacco best I can tell it was meant for peyote and sage some research done. One of the main driving factors that drove the increase of cigarettes use over pipes was World War 1. If you look at the beginning of the war everyone smoked a pipe. They found them more difficult to use while in warfare and living in the trenches. They needed something that freed up the use of their hands for battle. And after the war the GI's brought cigarettes home them. I like to think that under ideal conditions the pipe is the best and most complete tool for the enjoyment of tobacco. It's a little sad that along with millions of men and woman, the first world War also killed the tobacco pipe.

Maybe that was a factor in the US. I live in Ireland which remained neutral and and we still saw the same shift from pipe to cigarettes. The main factor is the ease of administration of nicotine via cigarette compared to the pipe, smoking a pipe is too time consuming in a world which has continued to speed up; you can get a much greater nicotine hit in a much smaller time frame with a cigarette. Cigarettes were also marketed to a new smoker during this post-war era: women, who would have been reluctant to take up a pipe due to its overwhelmingly masculine association.

Gray Bailey is not alone in smoking old pipes. Most of my best meerschaums are at least 125 years old based on silver hallmarks on the collar or the award dates on the stamp in the case lid. Old pipes transmit nuances not found in new pipes. For this reason, I have not purchased a new, unused pipe in decades.

I don't smoke a pipe often, but when I do I use my grandfathers. I only own to pipes and both were his, one from back in the late twenties when he was younger, and the other being my favorite, was one he bought/aquired in WW2 in France. My grandfather was a combat medic, so just imagining the things he saw both good and horrendous during WW2, and all the years later, my father said he was smoking it, when man first landed on the moon, and any time he would wake up at night from nightmares of the war that pipe would calm him down. Like you said, they may not have a soul, but my God do I feel him throughout my body every time I smoke that pipe.

What an absolutely great philosophy! I love the idea of "paying it forward" I actually smoke a pipe myself every once in a while, maybe once every 2 weeks or so, always on a friday after work. Odd as this sounds, but I saw the enormous pleasure Gandalf and Bilbo both had in the very first lord of the rings, it alway stuck with me and I too find it very pleasurable to sit and puff on one. Lovely video :D

always wanted to smoke a pipe... ended up on cigarettes. still am to some degree. but when I lived off grid, a pipe was the way to go. I could hike to town without worrying about cigarettes, I'd stop on the side of lafarge quarry on the way into Alena, sitting on my bike, and pull out a pipe, looking out over the massive gorge. as ravens circle overhead. I'll never forget those moments, where I reconciled my discomforts with a good pipe in the great outdoors.

Had about 5 pipes which I smoked often at age 15 (alone) while reading. For 13 years or more I smoke the hookah. As you explained about contemplation and slowing things down, that is written about for the hookah too. Make my own hookah tobacco with pipe tobacco, strong stuff. It needs to mix with glycerine or the very hot coal would burn it. The more glycerine, the more clouds but less taste. I like the Syrian tobaccos or Borkum Riff which I smoked in 1968. With the pipe I would not inhale , but with the hookah I only inhale with no heat feeling since its water cooled. My favorite blend is using molasses instead of glycerine. Often add spices like a bit of clove or cinnamon, nutmeg, or rum, whiskey. Gave up the pipe for cigarettes the very day I was drafted age 18 into the 36 month army service in infantry recon and antitank unit T.O.W. missel. After discharge we also did 2 months a year in the same unit as previously ended up over the years with another 36 months served My son a Tank Merkavah 4 driver served too, my brothers 1 in the navy missile boats and 1 in our unit when he finished his 36 months he was in reserves in my unit! Gave up ciggies the day I finished at 21. Keep up the fine videos please.

Hedgehog's Right of Passage It is not called hookah, the real name for it is "Argilah". If you still smoke Argilah, a tip I learned from my friends Arabic father is to buy a large bag of natural hard wood charcoal! Heat the charcoal on the stove with a grill grate then store the heated coals in the special designed standing metal coal holder. If you want more Argilah later that day an the coals are still warm use a large tin can with both top an bottom removed an throw some fresh coals on the heated coals an place the tin can on top to make like a funnel so the coals heat up nice. Most who smoke Argilah, pay WAY too much for a hand held size of coconut husk charcoal, for the same price as natural hardwood charcoal which lasts way over a month + even if you smoke daily. Hope that could help. #Namasté

I agree with you 90%. Thanks for the heads up !"Hookah" is what the Europeans call it and North Americans. I live in israel and smoke what Arabs and Israelis call "Nargilah". I've smoked about 14 years and worked here in Israel for a number of years. I make my own smoking shisha with pipe tobacco and flavouring or sometimes just the pipe natural flavour. It's cheap to buy vegetable glycerin and add it to the tobacco, but too much barely will heat the tobacco and also it lessens the taste. My favourite flavour is pipe tobacco, a tiny % of glycerin and mostly molasses. Arabs call the shisha tobacco "massul" since the old brainds were mainly molasses!

A truly awesome video. I really like the points you made here, and they've really got me thinking. I'm in a spot right now in life where a pipe can really help me to calm down and SLOW down. I see you there driving to your gig (I'm a musician too) and you're so calm & collected; the way in which you talk, your calm nature, your calm driving, etc., you're so calm in doing it all. I'm striving hard for that calm state of mind. Lately, thanks to nice folks like yourself sharing their thoughts, I'm realizing that a calm state of mind and personality begins with slowing down and accepting the present as it is. Not only staying present but finding comfort there in "the now" is how I can get myself into your kind of mindset. Pipe smoking practically demands that we slow down and rest because of all of the accoutrements and the simple, careful nature of pipe smoking--one of many things I love about pipes. When is the last time you saw a [real] pipe smoker in a hurry? Heh! Well anyways, I REALLY enjoyed this video, so thank you so much for sharing it. It sure got those gears turning. I'll definitely be stealing a page or two from your play-book! (= Best Regards from Cape Cod, MA

Awesome video Gray!!! I've always been a smoker. First cigarettes, then moved onto cigars, and now venturing into the pipe smoking arena, as I had just came across someone enjoying the most aromatic and wonderful smelling blend and I had to stop and ask myself, why hadn't I tried it before? As I've enjoyed the smell of a pipe since I was a small child. So, I ordered a nice pipe and some aromatic blends with stellar reviews and I await the peaceful and wonderful time that I can set aside for myself and enjoy my pipe and like a fine cigar, the memories... On a hot summer's afternoon. It's payday. Out with my friends at the bar we always go to. Out in the smoking area, waiting for a pizza to arrive. I crack one of these bad boys out (the pipe, not Gray Bailey). It's pure relaxation. I also had to ponder a few things. Whether to move to another country with work. Whether to retrain in my current job for the next two weeks. The pipe is an excellent tool for the thinking man or lady.

That’s awesome that you give the pipe kits out. It really is a great exercise in slowing down and in reflection. I recently started smoking pipes because the tobacco smell reminds me of working in tobacco when I was young.
