Pipistrel Alpha Trainer | Flying Lesson #1 - Introduction to Type | Checkout Flight | ATC
Today, I get to fly the awesome Pipistrel alpha trainer that my flight school has recently acquired to use as its primary trainer. This flight will be the first of a few where I get introduced to the flying characteristics and handling of the alpha. If it flies as good as it looks, I'm in for a real treat! Lets jump into the cockpit and check her out...
ABOUT ME:
I'm a student pilot learning to fly in my spare time. With full audio and complete lessons, come fly and learn with me, on the amazing journey to become a pilot and beyond.
Check out my various video series which documents my journey to become a pilot:

Cross-country endorsement: • Cross country endoresment
Aerobatic endorsement playlist: • Playlist
Tail wheel endorsement: • Tailwheel Endorsement
ABOUT ME:
I originally received 30 hours of flying instruction 17 years ago and now I'm back in the cockpit and learning how to fly all over again.
Currently flying out of Wollongong (YWOL), Australia in light sport aircraft such as the Jabiru and Pipistrel alpha with Fly Illawarra. Also, flying out of Camden Class D (YSCN), Australia in the aerobatic Citabria with Curtis aviation.

@@RomeoJulietWhiskey Have you done some of the primary and secondary effects of the Controls? Cause the computer can actually level you from a climb or descent, Only issue is the trim for me... Have you solo'ed in it?

wow those dc3s are still flying. good video and flying. quick rotate and rate of climb. i heard the sling and bistrell are like that at 50 knots rotation. looks like a nice plane. no vibration and quiet

Yeah, its an amazing little plane. We were climbing out at 1200fpm... the Jabiru 170 I did most of my initial training in does about half of that. It also cruises at 105kts and burns only 13.6L per hour!

Glad you are enjoying yet another aircraft. We are fortunate to have so many choices. I always think of aircraft are somewhat like women ..."all women are beautiful...just that some are more beautiful than others". Lucky me. I'm married to a beautiful woman and I own a Jab. Couldn't get any better eh? Wait till we bring the Flight Design CT over to Wollongong in 2 weeks for the airshow. More adventures!!

I was wondering, which plane had more cabin space, the Jabiru 230 or the Pipistrel. The Alpha looked a little confining.
@RomeoJulietWhiskey

robsmoke2 we are both pretty skinny so I haven't really noticed much difference. If I were to guess, I'd say the 230

Not sure about that Howard...Id have to ask Bruce, but I wouldn't think there would be that many. Id say they are much more common in Europe where Pipistrel are based.

Hi there!! What would be the reason for the flightschool to change there primary training aircraft from the Jabiru to the Pipistrel?? Love your videos and enjoy every minute.
@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 7 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the videos CPN! Regarding the switch, I think it was partly based on economics - the J170 my instructor half-owned was better off going to the mother school up at the OAKS where there was bigger demand for it. I think the alpha is also cheaper to run (it runs off mogas) and an opportunity came up for the flight school to buy one pretty cheap and in good condition. They really are a great little trainer - the controls are so well harmonized. Nothing wrong with the Jabiru, but as my instructor said "the jabiru is like a Holden or Ford, the alpha is closer to an Alpha Romeo" ...Id have to agree. I'll be using it as my main little plane for flying myself and friends around my hometown.

Hey Ryan, your testing my memory there mate. I think if you study what is in the syllabus you should be fine. I also recall having some questions that were based on the airport I fly out of e.g. noise abatement procedures etc If your doing an RPC, I'd suggest checking out the forums @ www.recreationalflying.com/forums/ There is heaps of information on this very topic.

I think it is good that flyillawarra has gotten that aircraft. Im next door at NSW Air flying the 152 and the 172. The classic airplanes. Still good though.
@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 6 жыл бұрын
Liam O'Donnell you should go for a fly in it... It is very different from the 172!
@liam2303
@liam2303 6 жыл бұрын
Romeo Juliet Whiskey how different?
@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 6 жыл бұрын
Lots of subtle differences - the main difference would be performance. The modern design of the Alpha means its very aerodynamically clean. Speed can easily get away from you in a shallow dive, and sometimes it can be hard to get the plane to descend with idle power! Slipping becomes very handy, like with a tail-dragger.

With all due respect: one hour operational time and it seemed to take half of that for preflight cabin check. Not much left for flight time. Or am I misled?

Roger that. Thanks for reply. Noticed instructor mentioned the fuel capacity, before take off, was at half. Giving the aircraft two hours flight time. Guess I had best check the specs more closely. Blue Skies to you.

Surely there must be a way to improve the quality of that annoying radio! We're in 2018 now, why are we still using 1930's radio technology?
@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 6 жыл бұрын
It was a new 2nd hand plane the instructor had just acquired which had a few minor issues. He managed to fix the radio but yeah...it was pretty annoying in this lesson

I see but I was talking in more general terms. I've seen several other videos lately and I often find it quite hard to understand what the tower says. There must be some way to improve the quality of the radio, using digital technology or something. I realize there are international standards and protocols that makes it hard to change anything but surely it would benefit air safety if the communication channel was improved.

MAKE SURE YOU GET AN INSTRUCTOR FROM YOUR OWN COUNTRY OR ONE THAT DOES NOT HAVE AN ACCENT AND THAT CAN SPEAK CLEAR ENGLISH...REAL ENGLISH IS NEEDED AND CLEAR SPEECH...INTERVIEW YOUR INSTRUCTOR BEFORE YOU START FLYING OR YOUR FLIGHT TIME COULD BE HELL AFTER HAVING TI LISTEN TO THAT FOR 50-70 HOURS LISTENING TO THAT! AU AND NZ AND A FEW OTHER COUNTRIES THAT HAVE BEEN UNDER THEIR CONTROL AND HAVE HAD TO LEARN THIS TWISTED VERSION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE HAVE THEIR OWN TWISTED VERSION OF ENGLISH AND ITS PRONUNCIATION AND WHAT THEY BELIEVE IS ENGLISH IS A TWISTED AND TORMENTED WAY TO LEARN HOW TO FLY A PLANE...JUST GET SOMEONE YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND AND GO WITH THEM IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE FOR THE NEXT 40-70 HOURS OF TRAINING.
