I really like theory videos that add more than just talking about stuff straight from the pages. By chance have you checked out the Dunk and Egg novellas? The Audible " Knight of the 7 Kingdoms" is read by the guy who plays Visarys on Game and he does AMAZING

I think he does a great job exploring it. I remember in a Tyrion chapter in Dance of Dragons, he talks to Penny when they were slaves to the big fat guy (sorry I forgot his name), and he says something along the lines of how they were being treated better than a vast majority of other slaves. And it got him thinking about how similar slaves in Essos are to servants in Westeros. They both have a lord, are forced to do what they're told or they'll be punished, make next to no money, and are treated terribly or decent enough depending on who their lord is. So they're basically the same, just Westerosi have a teeny tiny bit more freedom, but the parallels are really cool

@@Jake-gp1ik I agree. I sometimes wonder if he's asking us to keep our eyes open to our world and look for versions of slavery that we might call another name. Debt slavery is a popular one in western society. But in parts of the world you have more insidious versions of debt bondage, where workers (if I recall correctly a majority are from Bangladesh, India, etc) are tricked into immigrating for work. "The company" will cover the cost of the visa (usually around $10k USD) and they can "work it off." But the amount they earn and the amount they are forced to pay for lodgings and food, essentially make it impossible for the workers to ever pay off their visa debt. They prey on vulnerable people from poor regions, who will take any risk to earn money for their family to survive. We might call these things another name, but is it really that much different? I'm not sure. I love how I have come to look at the world through a different lens after reading asoiaf, and the supporting materials, a few times. GRRM might be called a literary activist, and that does seem to fit his nature. When filling his forms to withdraw from the draft for the Vietnam War as a conscientious objector, he submitted his short story "The Hero" with his application. I'll link the story, it's only about 9 pages long, but you can see how he uses fiction as allegory. Something to think about when reading his work, it's really interesting to ponder the extra meaning behind his words. Based on interviews and some of his written reflections, I do believe that's something that GRRM hopes people get out of his stories.
