Being hilarious is what Jack does best...no doubt. His quirky character makes the Pirate movies what they are!
We rarely see his serious side but there are some great and epic scenes actually. Unfortunately some of the best ended up as deleted scenes. That they cut most of his conversation with Beckett is really a shame. It adds a lot of depth to his character and it explains how he got his pirate branding.
If you are more into the fun stuff check out my fun tribute of Captain Jack...;-)

@@TheFritzTheo The first part of your comment is correct, but the latter half is the very problem of the story. The retcon in this is that in previous movies it was established that Jack didn't became a pirate until AFTER Beckett branded him and torched ''his'' Wicked Wench.. which must have taken place AFTER Salazar's attack because it was only after this attack that he became the new captain.

Rob Davies It was. After Jack freed the slaves, Beckett branded him as a pirate and set his ship on fire, which at the time was named *The Wicked Wench*. Jack tried to save his ship but failed due to falling debris, which knocked him unconscious. That's where Jones came in. In a deal with Jack, he saved him from death and raised the *Wench*. When he raised the ship it was in perfect condition except for the hull being permanently charred, which prompted Jack to rename it *The Black Pearl*

"The world used to be a bigger place" "No, theres just less in it" At the time Jack and Barbossa had this little talk they had pretty much done it all. They were pirates, theives, murderers, free men(as in they upheld no law except their own...and the code, of course), they did whatever they wanted whenever they felt like it. They sailed the seven seas, with Jack as captain and Barbossa as first mate. They were friends before Barbossa mutinied and took the Pearl and marooned Jack to die. They were immortals once, and had both died before. Each had tried killing each other, and Jack did kill Barbossa, squaring their debt for the betrayal. They'd struck deals with spirits and both bore curses, Jack from Jones and both from the Aztec gold. They each, for a time, captained the Pearl which was the fastest ship in the sea. Fought cursed spirits, monsters, and knew a hell of a lot about the supernatural. They themselves were legends amongst pirates, and were amongst the most wanted and hunted pirates by the British navy (and others) which was arguably the most powerful navy in history. They were actual Pirate Lords. When I thought about all of this and rewatched the movies this scene becomes more profound by the sheer fact that they had done it all, and were still here. They'd seen the world, and knew most of it's secrets. "The world used to be a bigger place" and "There's just less in it." Is about two legends commenting on the state of the world, and how it's become less mysterious, less wouderous, and being slowly conquered and killed off by small minded, greedy, corrupted men. This conversation took place over the carcass of the Kraken, one of the most feared and powerful monsters of the sea. It's actually quite a sorrowful moment between these two, and in Beckett's words "the last of a dying breed." They are some of the last from the end of an era, and the remnants of of a bygone age.

"You've spared me the possibility of becoming anything other then what I am" To me, that line speaks volumes about Jack. He never wanted to be a pirate, it was forced on him because he did a good deed. Yes, by the time we see him in Curse of the Black Pearl, he's adapted and embraced it, but to me, Jack never really let go of what could've been. That's why I always feel an unspoken anger in Jack's voice when he says that. Becket lost some profit, Jack lost the only life he had ever known
@AzguardMike

@@faisalakhtar3394 I agree. Jack does say he is “truly” thankful and, although he still has a score to settle, I think he’s telling the truth. Beckett did essentially rob him of his life and freedom, but just as Jack tends to do, he made the most out of his situation and ironically found out that he’s one of the greatest pirates anyone has ever seen. He would have never found his calling if not for Beckett.

This comment is so underrated. Agree 100%. I allways get mad when people call Jack a coward. He's brave, just in most situations he acts cleverly instead of knuckleheaded and people think that you have to brainlessly jump into danger to be brave. Jack usually tries a brave and clever approach, if it doesn't work, he runs, but when there is no way out, he always faces the situation like a hero. It's just that in most situations he prefers to avoid violence and sadly, nowadays it seems that you have to be a warmonger to be considered brave.

0:15 This truly breaks my heart, and not just because I’m a maJor FaNgIrl. The scar, the burns; oh god. Captain Jack Sparrow is actually a great person. He freed slaves, which is basically why Beckett marked the P on his arm. He then had nothing so he had to strike a deal with Jones to become a captain, and that’s how he became a pirate. He was never the type of murderous, insane pirate who enjoyed invading places only to kill and get a few shillings; he’d never even dream of it.

He actually with jokes wants to escape from his ugly reality and he is very caring and emotional, and I can confirm that with that scene where Will is dying and where he is hesitant about what to do with Jones's heart. Stab it and become immortal or leave it to his friend Will who needs more. I really sympathize with Captain Jack Sparrow!

I feel like in a way, it was trying to tell us that, while Jack may be a big part in the movies, he is aging and the rum is getting to him (bad pun but all jokes aside) and that it's essentially the time to move on. I personally think they want to move on to possibly the foreshadowing of Jack Sparrow's child (see POTC 4 for details for those that aren't familiar) and how the raising of this said child is beared by Angelica while Jack isn't in the picture. While Dead Men Tell No Tales does show us that Jack can and will overcome enemies that overwhelm his friends and descendants of friends, as you said, he essentially had no role outside of the comic relief.

As Bootstrap Bill tells Jack the story of how he ended up in service to Davy Jones, Jack can only look on with pity for the fate that befell his old friend. Sure, he tries to brush it off with the line “It’s funny what a man will do to forestall his final judgement” after Bootstrap finishes talking, but it’s clear from his expression during the scene that Bootstrap’s punishment hit harder than Jack wants to admit.

Captain Jack Sparrow is the bravest man I know. All the other men in the movie "act" like their macho and are a coward when they cry, but when Jack cries, they know not to judge him. Jack's tears are genuine, he is a man who has truly been through extreme excruciating agony. And lived to tell the tale. And was forced to watch as others didn't. They died slow agonizing deaths. And when he sees someone in pain, it breaks his heart. When Will died, he was shattered. Because Will had become a BROTHER to him. (Sorry Will/Jack-ers) Regardless of whether you believe that or not. But he had to be a soldier and move on. And it killed him to do so. But when Will came back his heart rejoiced. And together they made full canvas and blew the Endeavor into the water. Obliterating his true enemy at last.

Rebecca B I agree with you. I consider Pirates of the Caribbean to be a trilogy, because the fourth felt weird and wrong, and the fifth not only felt wrong, but also contradicted established lore

I absolutely love the first three Pirates movies, i've seen enough clips of the fourth to make me uninterested, and even though the fifth had as Bob Smith has said "contradicted established lore" I still find the movie enjoyable and fun

✋Spoiler Alert. You have been warned Facts you need to know: Jack saved a group of slaves, hence making the East India Company mark him as a pirate, and they also sink his ship the Wicked Wrench. Also know, that Jack was once enslaved sooooooo. He also used to name much the monsters he encountered 'Beastie.' That's why when he faced the kraken he was like "Hello Beastie." The Sirens once tried to seduce him and his rag-tag crew, using their magical voices. Only Jack was able to withstand their seductive singing, because all he wanted was pure freedom, and the Siren's singing can't give him that. When Jack was young, he didn't really like pirates. He didn't like to be called a thief too. I guess the unfortunate turn of events led him to become a pirate. Opinion: I see Jack as like, Tupac. And please, dont start rambling about how Jack cant rap, because I tell you, if he was a composer, he would make the best rhymes using words that have 14 syllables. But back to the point, Jack has two sides of him. A beautiful part, and a really ugly one. Just like Tupac, he has a side on which he writes the nicest and prettiest poetry, and then another side where he makes songs that are always against society, specifically the cops. The darker side was made from tragedies that has happened to both of them. And the lighter side of both Jack and Tupac shows the real them, the person they were before all the tragic experiences. I guess that's what makes Jack a pirate hero. A pirate who pillages merchant ships, drinks rum, and feels no remorse to almost anything he does. A bad pirate who is willing to charm girls and use them for profit (remember that famous scene where Jack got slapped on the face twice by two fine ladies? yeah. There's a KZfaq video explaining that. Search it up folks.) But know that he is also a hero who sacrificed his achievements, and titles to his friends in need, he is a hero who will save a friend despite of the fact that the person may have almost killed him, actually killed him, and/or betrayed him *cough Barbossa, Elizabeth and Will cough*. He has a moral compass, saving more lives than any other person in POTC. And also make sure to read the books, The second book truly displayed his loyalty and love to his crew. Anyways, serious Jack is the real Jack.

“If you choose to love your heart away, you’ll lose it for certain.” That quote is a good one as I believe it’s synonyms with “Those who don’t care once cared too much.” Because I feel Jack cared about people and loved the freedom he has but he knows he can’t do it anymore or he’ll lose himself. 2:50

I love Jack. He's a great character. Sure, he has his funny moments, but these serious moments make him even better. The back story that was cut is an amazing part of who Jack is. It's a shame the decided to cut it, and I wish they didn't. A lot of people love Jack because he's a random, funny, rum-loving pirate. But I love Jack because he's a all of that, *and* a good man. Just like Will and Elizabeth often say he is. Cheers to you Captain Sparrow! We love you!

You can see that he is a gem, right in his eyes. He is too good for this world. Too good and too kind. The innocence he possesses and the heartbreaks he has survived, made him wiser. That's what Jack is- a wise, witty, kind and dishonest pirate. At all costs, he wants his happiness whether if it is in small things or materialism. That's Jack. Truly selfish who doesn't want to hurt any innocent.

captain jack sparrow will make us either laugh or cry.....when jack really matters as a pirate is not when he makes impossible escapes but when he proves that he is a really really good man and a real pirate who loves his ship and his crew more than anything and who would risk everything for it. This is what to be a pirate means and i hope captain sparrow would agree
