I have taught in some areas of China,including Beijing and Jiangsu, and am full of admiration for the students. However, only four areas of China are included in the PISA scores: Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. These four areas are among the most developed and affluent in China, and they have some of the best schools in the country. As a result, their students tend to score higher.

@@journeylife7491 no it isn't. It is about the PISA rankings. Singapore is small and the information g easy to get. China is huge and very selective information only relating to PISA is obtained. Singapore with 5 million cannot be compared with China with 1.4billion.

@@NewmaticKe that is not what I wrote. The fact is PISA only applies to those 4 regions in China and not to the rest of China. Those 4 regions are not representative of the whole of China which you should know if you are such an expert making yourself a big deal . I worked in China for longer than 24 years.

Just these four regions already have 184million people more than half of US population. This is why US feels so threatened by China. People tend to forget China is more like a continental civilizational state rather than a nation state.

Actually, Shanghai and Beijing are over-rated. For example, the mathematical cream of China is in Hubei. I suggest PISA in future test more groupings e.g. (Shandong-Fujian-Hubei-Sichuan) in China other than the (Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang) group. And I wouldn't be surprised China then permanently hog the top 5 places. Just consider even now, the top 6 places are all East Asians including Taiwan, Macau, HK - all Chinese-origin systems. Only Singapore in ASEAN bucks the trend - but there again, Singapore is 75% Chinese-origin.

Singapore billionaire list is lengthening, this proves that the education system is successful. The ability to produce top entrepreneurs. If you are born in Singapore, you go thru Singapore education system, you hv good chance of becoming a billionaire.

Singaporean are 70% Ethnic Chinese descended from mainly two provinces in China, Fujian and Guangdong. Guangdong actually did really bad among BSJG commensurate with average IQ. S (Shanghai) and J (Jiangsu) have higher IQ but Zhejiang has the highest IQ among Chinese provinces. Fujian scores a little less than Jiangsu and Zhejiang in terms of population IQ. There are at least 400-500million Chinese in China have the same or higher average IQ of Singaporean Chinese. Singapore knows this which is why the ruling Lee family has been promoting immigration from China.

I feel that PISA should also include creativity and critical thinking test separately so that we can see a more holistic and complete picture of the educational effect of each country instead of giving accolades to only countries that excel in rote learning and memorisation. I’m very sure Singapore will do well in critical thinking and creativity as their teaching methods had steered away from rote learning these days when the teachers are more interested in teaching kids how to apply math in real life situations and giving them open ended questions without specific answers in science to cultivate their interest in learning and solving problems.

You know private sector has made a huge pressures for employees to make self-extreme isolation especially low income household child might be the most affected when forging to job opportunity and Multinational Corporation job offer after graduated from university from non-STEM degree will be at the worst scenario.

When China participates - only its 4 best districts (Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang) are assessed. So Singapore has probably topped the PISA world ranking for many years.

City state is highly biased and is more objectively compared with cities. Population of Singapore is only 5.4million. Beijing 21million, Shanghai 26million, Jiangsu 80million, Zhejiang 57million. That's 34 times Singapore already.

I think PISA test should also include critical thinking and creativity tests to ensure we don’t only have accolades for rote learning and memorisation countries.
