Pit Boss Vertical Copperhead Series 5 smoker. I have owned this smoker for a year now, thought a quick review of the smoker was in order during Memorial Day weekend 2020. Still making great bbq.

I’ve made some really delicious bbq in this smoker. Yesterday’s pork butt was on 9 hours low and slow, it came out great.

Thanks for the information Craig, mine was just delivered yesterday I plan to do the burn off tomorrow. First Pit Boss smoker. I wore the last electric smoker out, thought I would try a pellet smoker this time.

Good info about the auger. Hope you do more cooks. Gonna check out your garden

This is a solid vertical smoker. Never thought I'd do pellet.. ever. If you buy one, get a 2nd temp probe. My model has a balls on accurate temp gauge, but its near the firebox. If you buy an extra Pit Boss probe ($20 ebay) you can put it on the top rack and know the temp from top to bottom of the smoker.

Good reason to screen your pellets to eliminate the dust and fines from the fines. Save your glass scrap the Brillo type and spray with Awesome or Simple Green and paper towels. I use that on my Series 3 Copperhead.

I spray the glass with pure white vinegar then preheat it to 225. Once it hits temp all you have to use is a paper towel to wipe clean it's crazy how easy this works

That is a good looking smoker . I bet it can really cook

Hey Rusty, I like it. It's bigger than what I need, but then, that's all part of the smoking thing I guess!

wow...mechanical smoker...and an oven too....I remember when you bought it...I never cooked with pellets...happy you like it

I didn't think I would like pellets for a smoker, I was going to build my own wood smoker. It makes some great barbeque, but there is maintenance of the auger and mostly keeping the inside clean. Have to vacuum the firebox out before each smoke, it fills with ash and so forth- but once you learn, it works good.

I just got a masterbuilt for Father’s Day and have been disappointed with its build quality. After 2 smokes the paint in bubbling. I followed everything to a T. I am considering returning it and getting on of these units. Did you notice any issue with it bubbling or flaking near the door seal? How do think this compares to the masterbuilt.
@CraigArndt4 жыл бұрын
Basshead The paint on this smoker is like a peened enamel finish, I haven’t had any flaking around the door or on the door. This smoker isn’t comparable to a master built at all. I owned one with an analog dial and scrapped it last year. Even a top of the line Masterbuilt doesn’t come close to this. Now this is a good smoker, it’s affordable and it works great. Now maybe a Traeger is a lot better, I’m not sure, but for my purposes, this makes awesome bbq. And you can smoke a ton of food. I usually run it 275° for most things I smoke, I get a nice deep smoke ring and lots of flavor. Takes about 1.5 hours to put together, but you get a good look at the unit. Hope that helps.

Craig Arndt awesome. I looked at these on Walmart’s website this morning now it says item cant be found. Hope it is a webpage error. Thanks for the info. You sold me on this.

Craig Arndt if you haven’t stumbled upon it yet check out the channel called “weekend warrior bbq” he does a lot on the pit boss vertical smokers. I believe I heard him talking about pit boss sponsoring him? He has a lot of great videos and information. He has good recipes, maintenance, general information.

How many pork butts can the 5 fit? I usually do 4 at a time and cant decide if I NEED the 7 or the 5 is fine...
@CraigArndt2 жыл бұрын
4 shoulders is easy for the 5 Series. You could put 4 on one rack if they were 6-9 pounds a piece and still not have them touch. The 5 series is deep like the 7, but probably not as tall. But the taller it is, the colder the top is. I do a pan of baked beans and beef closer to the top, two butts below on one rack. Sometimes I do two or three racks of ribs on one rack, two beer can chickens above… which takes a lot of space. Lots and lots of adjustments for shelves, loads of holes to move them up or down. Make sure to buy from Amazon an extra temp Probe. I like to put one on the top rack so I know the temp on the top shelf.

Considering the 3 series. Or is the 5 necessary?
@CraigArndt Жыл бұрын
There is nothing I've done on my 5 series that I couldn't have done on a 3 series. When I bought it at Walmart, they just started carrying Pit Boss and the 5 is what was available. I always have shelves stacked at the top of the smoker I don't use. If you aren't cooking for 20 people, get the 3.

@@CraigArndt Thanks, I ended up finding the pro series at Lowe's. I'm starting my first cook tomorrow morning. Crossin my fingers the whole place doesn't blow.

Good review and I’m happy you got a good one. I returned mine after four cooks due to overheating issues and an ErH code that would shut the unit down. I posted a video about it on my channel. Go check it out and read through the comments. Apparently a lot of people are having the same problem that I had.
@CraigArndt4 жыл бұрын
I heard the ErH is that sensor probe behind the fire box. I keep mine clean but heard there have been issues. I think the pellet type is the culprit too. I used apple pellets, everything was coated in a sticky tar. These things like clean pellets. I'll check out your channel, thanks for posting Ric.

I really liked the unit. I guess I got a lemon. What I didn’t like was the customer service. That’s the main reason I took it back

Same issue @Ric’s. We got one from Lowe’s and it threw nothing but codes. Ended up returning it and getting one of their pellet grills.

It’s a great smoker, I could have gone with the a Series 3 that was smaller. I’ve smoked two pork butts when we had family over, but I don’t do enough meat to fill this baby up.

**BEWARE FIRE HAZARD** I have been a firm believer and user of this product for some time now. I have done many smokes almost weekly. I maintain and clean my smoker after every use. I have recently found an issue that is concerning and could cause a fire on long smokes. Under the unit were the thermometer line comes through, there is a big hole that allows the grease to run down onto the electrical wires and connectors. It has the potential to cause a fire.
