Pit Boss Err Code and Ignitor Replacement

In this video, I’m having trouble with my Pit Boss Smoker. I did a little research on Err codes (error code) for the smoker and I’m ready to pass on what I’ve learned. I’m also going to do ignitor replacement to get the smoker up and running again.

Be careful unscrewing the screw that holds the rod in place... Mine snapped in half and I couldn't extract it, attempting to get it out just warped the screw hole. Took 9 months to get a replacement because only the 1150 uses that particular bracket and there aren't any after market versions.

I literally just bought one last week. App said igniter malfunction on every startup and mid cook. Could take it back on principle, but I just ordered an igniter to see if this fixes it. If not it's going back. Thanks for the vid!

I had to do the same thing on my pitt boss whiskey still smoker. that was a more difficult job. Good video

Just installed the new ignitor from pitt boss and still have the same err code again. Both ignitors ohm out as good too. They are sending new board and ignitor this time... Cleaned temp probe too, any other thoughts?

No if you changed the igniter and the control panel, I’ve got nothing. I’m assuming you checked all the connections as well underneath while you were there I’d be getting a hold of Pit Boss. They are great when they work, but they can be such a pain when they don’t.

Did the igniter fix the issue? I've has the same issue with my 1600 elite. It just keeps shutting down.

I just bought a Lexington onyx at the end of December and pit boss said I needed a new control board. I also got the igniter error code. I told the guy I think I may need a new igniter. He said new control board. Thoughts?

I actually have it fired up now and it’s getting up to temp. I’m unsure what the issue is. I hesitate to leave it going all night tho because of fear of the error code

With it being new and under warranty I would follow customer service advice and start by having them send you the new control board. That should be an easy swap compared to the igniter. Good luck.

@robertwillis9343 I have the exact same grill. Bought it and the cover at my local Walmart this last summer. Didn't use it much, but it worked great until just recently. It would start okay. Get up to about 100 to 160 degrees and throw the dreaded ERR with flashing igniter icon. Had to finish a brisket in the oven. Called customer service. He says I need a new control board. This was a month ago. Just got it today. Installed it and unfortunately it still does the same exact thing. The funny thing is, very rarely it works okay, but can't be trusted. Gonna call em' again and see if they'll send an igniter.

I just installed my new control board today as well. It got up to temp and I let it run for about 15 minutes before I shut it off. However, I grilled chicken for about 30-40 minutes the other day with the old Control board and didn’t have an issue either. It is sporadic when it throws the error code on mine. Hopefully I don’t have the issue again.

so i have the err code with the ignitor flashing the ignitor seems to be working the smoker gets up to like 225 and just shuts down says its over heating so im confused if its the ignitor or the probe

I would definitely get ahold of customer service with it being so new. I believe I was having that same issue with it shutting down with the igniter but never said it was overheating. I will add to just check to make sure pellets are coming out because I’ve had that issue with an auger jam as well when pellets got wet minus the overheating code. Good luck. When it works it great but it is very finicky from time to time.

@mgshizzle2213 believe me I feel your pain being in that situation before just not quite as new. I guess it’s igniter, but I’m just another guy that owns a pit boss that’s had to work through a few issues. Like I said I would definitely get a hold of customer service, and hopefully they can make it right for you.

Are your pellets advancing? I’ve had that code a couple times. and it was an auger jam. If they aren’t you’ll have to remove auger Ang clear the jam. But could also be the sensor is dirty or faulty. Or even the control board.

Mine is giving the same on Lexington. Called Pitboss and they wanted me to trouble shoot it . Since it's under warranty guess they'll send the part

These pellet grills are garbage, they only last about a year. and the trouble starts. They are almost impossible to work on and the parts are so expensive your better off buying a new grill . and make sure you get a different brand....PITBOSS grills are JUNK!

I really can’t complain about mine. This was my only issue in the last 3 years. Pit boss’s customer service did their job as well walking me through the issue and sending me the part. Sorry to hear you had a different experience!

Huh? Ignitor rods wear out, the rest of the grill is fine. There's a new aftermarket rod that lasts much longer now as well...
