I've always loved Shunji Iwai, especially Lily chou chou, picnic and vampire. In fact, I'd say All About Lily Chou Chou changed my life when I watched it in 2011/2012. It completely changed my perspective of film and art and that is why it is my favorite film till this day. Your description of the purpose of his films hits the nail on the head. You put into words what I felt while watching his films. You explained it perfectly. This is an amazing video. Thank you.

Have you watched ''Undo'' yet? If not i recommend it to you. This film is also great and have a lot of aesthetic scenes. I mean the scene is really nice, some looks like a painting.

@@sheepred9209 I have watched Undo, yes. It is a beautiful film. Iwai and his cinematographer make such aesthetic shots. I completely agree, the shots in his films are like paintings. I wrote that in an essay for university and referred to it as "picture-frame shots"

i’m just wondering how the hell he gets the budgets for these movies obviously if they’re popular he’ll get more money but they always look so expensive 😭
@v-trigger61374 ай бұрын
Well he constantly casts pop music stars and younger coming age actors. They are easier to sell among producers eyes, so they give him the money. plus his movies were hit back in the days, so he certainly have made an cult following of his

My favorites are Love Letter and Swallowtail Butterfly. Love Letter has the most beautiful winter cinematography I have ever seen and the ending of the film is maybe the sweetest scene of all time hahaha. While Swallowtail is probably Iwai's most unique and ambitious work, a legitimate epic- Shunji Iwai style. That said, I did not like All about Lily Chou Chou. It's his most self indulgent work, his usual filmmaking quirks are all cranked up to 10 and it is simply too much. Only the most hardcore Iwai or arthouse fans will enjoy it, it's undecipherable to the general audience. I imagine the film would be maddening to the average filmgoer, as even I could barely sit through it. That said, no one can deny the man is a true auteur.

@swagikuro My favorite Iwai film is probably A Bride for Rip Van Winkle. But Love Letter is a close second with Lily Chou Chou. I love Lily Chou Chou for the reasons you described lol. The sprawling experimental nature of the film really captured me. I really love most of his films though including Swallowtail. Even the tv movie ones like Ghost Soup and April Story.

There are also many outstanding aspects of Shunji Iwai's filmmaking. He highlights a lot of the social issues in his films and there's just a sincerity/honesty in portraying youth. I've watched Florida Project recently and nearing the end, I feel there are some deliberate choices in the children shots. It feels like some shots are used as a 'tear jerker' that made me feel uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong, I loved Florida Project and think its an excellent film but the way Shunji Iwai portrayed youth and innocence is much more raw and powerful than many films out there.

My absolute favorite director of all time. I often feel pinned against the seat after watching his movies. So deep, so relatable, often emotionally devastating...

While looking up pictures to edit for my own video today I found you via the Poetry of Tony Takitani thumbnail on Google Images. I watched that video and really love your telling of a story and now this one which has opened me to another style of storytelling. Thank you. Keep it up and your channel is too good to not have more subs. Thank you again. I am now subbed and waiting for your next video.

Mostly about a kid name Yuichi and the hardships he goes through in the coming of age story and how they have almost a cult like following to a popstar name Lillie chou chou and the music brings them together even though there are external, very serious real life problems happening.
