In 1941, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese took possession of Guam. In 1944, the USA was determined to take back their small pacific territory and launched an invasion to reclaim the strategic position. Anticipating the American invasion, the Japanese built significant defenses along the beach and in the hills. These three Vickers-type Model 3s are located up a short hill in the village of Piti (not far from the Piti Power Plant).
To find the trail, head south from Tumon or Hagatna on Hwy 1 (Marine Drive). Before you reach the power plant, you'll pass a Day-by-Day store and a 76 Circle K gas station. Turn left off Hwy 1 at the first road past 76 Circle K. Drive a short distance to read Our Lady of Assumption Church. The trail begins with a set of stairs leading up the hill on the church's back left side (see the video for visuals).
PSA: The use of unmanned aircraft (drones) is prohibited on National Park Service lands. I was unaware of this rule before filming this video. I no longer operate a drone on NPS land and encourage everyone to abide by all federal and state regulations.

As a 5th grader on the playground of the nearby school, I saw that gun pointing out from the jungle every day. It was interesting that when a local friend showed me up there, he stopped us at the trail entrance and asked the taotaomona spirits for permission to enter.

I met an aunt of one of my co-workers and she was part of a forced labor team for the Japanese. When they knew US forces were close they killed most of them but she played dead and was able to survive but she had quite a scar where they had attempted to behead her.

The gun fell over because of a tree hitting it in a typhoon. US Navy did not have battle cruisers off-shore during the liberation. No rice fields on these slopes. Model 1914 gun. Actually manufactured a few years later.

I remember hiking solo quite a few times around the tank farm near Leo Palace. The offroad trails will lead up to the ridgeline where you can see the naval base, and you can spot upper sigua falls from the trails, but I couldnt find a safe way down. I also recommend going to lower sigua falls and wade up stream as far as your willing... beautiful jungle scenery. If your feeling adventurous, go south from the tank farm down into Menengon river and wade down stream, take your time and watch your step, theres no ropes to help you down or up. Where the river starts getting deeper and darker, it gets eerily quiet.

Took that tour thru the jungle to see all of those WW2 sites, including those guns. Amazing to be able to see & touch history like that.

There’s a local guy non Chamorro that gives tours to the military that get assigned to Guam for their first time. He’s married to a Chamorro woman & he takes folks around the island on a respectfully narrated historical tour of Guam with a native emphasis and perspective. I can pass on his name if you like... he can even get you onto base to see the beaches the locals have no access to.

Thank you so much for sharing. Beautiful shots but really could have done without the shot of that long snake skin LOL by this you could probably tell I'm not a snake fan. From the village of Agat. Again thank you for all your post.

Hey Eleanor... I'm not a huge fan of snakes either. I've actually never seen one of the brown tree snakes alive on Guam. I've only seen them dead on the road or their left behind skins.

They should just incorporate the gun sitting on a latte stone aiming it at a Sherman tank w/ that nut Kimchee in NK inside an oval in the next version of the Guahan flag. War is in our DNA. 🤙🏽
