Hello, my name is Paolo and I am writing to you from Italy. I thank you because you show me the deep face of the United States of America, not Hollywood but beautiful people, real, who with hard work live the dream that they themselves build, day by day. Best wishes to you and your husband Grant. Paolo, Desenzano del Garda Lake Italy.

A 50/50 mix of Acetone and Synthetic automatic transmission fluid will be the best rust penetrant you will ever use. Also always use Anti-Seize on all your bolts when re-assembling anything you plan on servicing later. Enjoying the content!

Well done Laura, never be ashamed to ask for help, those who don't usually end up hurt. Congratulations on Grant and Laura Wilson starting to acquire their own farm equipment, you have to start somewhere and it doesn't have to be a big tractor or combine. Looking forward to seeing more of your farming life, as much as you can safely share. Laura Farms was my first, and has led me to several others. To me you will always be at the top of my list, take cafe, be safe and farm on.

One thing to keep in mind, before starting work on parts exposed to the elements like that, use a small wire brush to clean the bolts and nut threads and douse with some penetrating oil. Give it a few minutes to soak in and most will come off easier. But there will always be the "one."

Suggestion: Discuss w/Grant & your Dad the long term advantages of: #1 - Put a 'Never-Seize' product on threads every time you have to put to on parts like splines, mating surfaces, bolts & studs, etc. This includes anything new you might have to ever service. Long term experience is a quantum help in the future. #2 - Consider adding a quality Penetrant to your 'GO' kit. WD-40 is vegetable based & is good, but better overall results like having fewer broken Bolts & Studs if you're first using a Penetrant on visibly corroded screws, nuts, etc. Thanks for the Nebraska Farmer's Metal Head Music!

@@trentjohnson7246 (you probably already know this) WD 40 means "Water Displacer, attempt #40". It was designed to be a water displacing chemical created for the military back in WW2 to dry out the engine ignition systems on jeeps, tanks, etc. It was never designed as a lubricant in fact it washes away oil. It is a naptha and mineral spirits based solvent. It is good to keep steel and iron from corroding. I use it to spray on firearms and let dry (don't wipe off afterwards) for long term storage. It works almost as good as cosmolene. It's also good for removing tar and asphalt from vehicle fenders/paint.

I never use my angle grinder without a full face shield these days. When a disc shatters, it's not very fun. Or when you have a wire brush on and it's shooting little metal bristles at your face.

Congrats on the planter and tank purchase! Laura, you know all about Murphy's law now! I will tell you more about that when I meet you all here in February! If anything can go wrong, then it will! My rule is "maximum difficulty and frustration" with almost everything anymore. Yes, never run a grinder or a welder while dressed in shorts or short sleeves. Yes I agree with everything Dennis fox says below, even using a angle grinder that grinds off little pieces of hot metal but it's not really super hot and even the way you're dressed you could angle yourself and or the grinder so it really doesn't hit your legs. Thank you for the farming videos from Illinois reminds me of a lot.

@ianm452
@ianm452 2 жыл бұрын
Better still, a full face shield / visor. Safety glasses/goggles will protect your eyes, but they provide no protection to your face being ripped open by a disc when it explodes. Also, you need to check the date on every disc before you use it - in the UK and probably Europe and I hope in the USA, they have an expiry date marked on them, after which they should not be used. I was shocked when a flexible backing disc (for a sanding disc) exploded when I was using it, and bits of hardened rubber flew everwhere.

Safety tip of the day never use an angle grinder without the guard It increases the chances of you cutting yourself elf and also the disks can potentially shatter and come apart Sending pieces flying everywhere please always use the guard
@earlhollar1906
@earlhollar1906 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you on that one! Any size shape or thickness of any abrasive blade can explode. I worked on the track Department for the railroad and it took a few years when we switched over to abrasive saws to find blades that could handle the speed and Heat. The potential got worse as the rail got taller and the base wider the diameter of our abrasive saw blades went from 14 to 16 to 18 in in diameter and spun at the speed of a chainsaw. It was tough to see in the winter with a face shield goggles and safety glasses on with your welding leathers and your chainsaw leggings but we're worth it , you just hope the guard on the saw protected the other important regions.!.!

Got hit in the chest by a shattered disc. Its like a very very solid punch. It happens so fast, there is nothing you could do. My working clothes protected me, only a bruise. It was a cutting disc, and i guess someone had used it for grinding, which is a total no go. Should have looked at it before using it.

Hi! Laura: I don't mean to sound sexist at all. But the farmers of the old days wore bib coveralls. They are more functional than shorts and bare legs. My grandfather (my mother's father) was a small farmer and orchardist while I was growing up. He wore bib coveralls whenever he was out in the field. On real hot days he would disconnect the bib and let it hang from his waist. The coverall legs would protect your legs from disk grinder fragments. And like someone else suggested, you need to wear goggles or face shield whenever using power tools known to throw particles. My dad was born in 1910, he grew up on his family's homestead. His branch of the family had a full quarter section of the family property. I loved hearing the stories he'd tell of the days back on the farm - they did call it the Ranch. But alas, they lost the ranch during the depression, so I was never exposed greatly to that life style. Just from what I've seen in a couple of your videos, your dad must be proud of you. I never wanted to work on a farm, and I hated the look of coveralls, I never wanted to wear them. But you make farm work look like fun. If I was younger, I might try to get a job on a farm. No. On second thought I like being retired. Ha! Hard workers are hard to find these days, for any profession. Most young people don't know what work is. If I had a farm and needed workers, I'd sure hire you. Keep doing a great job, and do keep the videos coming.
