These Pixar Movies Had Major Changes In Other Countries
Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/Subscribe-to-TheBinger
Disney is a massive entertainment giant with movies releasing all the time, all over the world. Did you ever stop to think about how many people it takes to make something like that work? Entire teams dedicated to one job, such as translating the movies into different languages.
It turns out that getting Disney and Pixar movies ready for different countries is not as easy as throwing the script into Google translate. Sometimes entire jokes or scenes depend on an understanding of American culture. When that happens, the people behind the movie need to make some... adjustments.
Today, TheBinger is going to break down the most creative and confusing changes animators made for international audiences. Things like messages on cupcakes, weird food preferences, and even an entire character. Some of it was made to help audiences understand, and some was just plain fun.
So join us at TheBinger for a look into how Disney and Pixar change movies for international audiences.

I guess it’s more of that undefinable “American Patriotism”. Like someone else mentioned, globes were rather popular with 90s kids when it took AOL upwards 20 min to load up the internet, I promise you after waiting that long, no one is wasting time looking up maps. But I am an American, so I can comment that as a young nation, we take pride in our flag and what it represents. Also capitalism is practically the real main religion so you would be surprised at what and where we have our flag flying...
@halcionkoenig243

Probably because Andy was an American child in an era where the Internet wasn't very popular, and it was very culturally normal for kids to have American Flags in their bedrooms, while they'd have a globe for reference points in School? Or are many of you on here so culturally inept, that you don't know anything about America prior to the Internet?
@ianthemagus
@ianthemagus 4 жыл бұрын
@@halcionkoenig243 I was born in the early 80's and can't recall a single person I know having an American flag in their house, much less their room. I knew some military families with service plaques that had flag insignias ON them, but no actual flags. Very common to see flags flying in the front yard or on the porch, though. It wouldn't necessarily be considered weird, but I'm not sure if something can be designated as "very culturally normal" if there aren't many examples of anyone that actually did that. I'm not sure what the arrival of the internet has to do with it, either. I think you'd be way more likely to see that during the Bush administration (after 9-11) than before the internet. Now globes? Yeah, I had one, my brother had one, most of my friends had one, globes were WAY more common. Are you sure that YOU know anything about the country before the internet? ;)

If I had to guess I think the main reason Minty Zaki was changed is that the reference wouldn't click with Japanese people. First of all because name order is different. He is Miyazaki Hayao in Japan, with surname coming first. Second of all because the name Miyazaki is represented by kanji which are pronounced differently in different contexts. 宮崎 is read as Miyazaki, but just 崎 is Misaki. Third of all, Hayao Miyazaki is the only famous person with the last name Miyazaki famous in the west, there are many people named Miyazaki and in fact there is a Miyazaki prefecture in Japan. All in all, it's like if a Japanese movie had a character named Mike Cole and thought westerners would perceive it as a reference to Michael Eisner. It would go over absolutely everyone's heads.
@shinobu5359
@shinobu5359 4 жыл бұрын
There seems to be more sensitivity about references to other IP, characters, or people in Japan. For example, the first episode of "Osomatsu-san" was removed from streaming services and not released for home video - because it parodied/referenced a bunch of other anime and/or manga. Also when "Gundam" is spoken about in Lucky Star, it's censored... It's a little weird, but it's a comedy so it's kind of fitting to be quirky.
@kywha1e_
@kywha1e_ 4 жыл бұрын
I’m japanese and I’m pretty sure it’s mainly the third reason. I don’t think many people would understand that it’s a reference to that specific person, if a reference at all, since it’s just a common name and because there are lots of other names that are similar to it. Also, I don’t think that most japanese people would even notice that it isn’t a typical English name. Most people don’t know common foreign names, so they would probably think that zaki is just another name and they put minty in front of it to make it cute.

Oddly enough western fans of Japanese animation, hate it when they change something to be "more relatable" to us. We like the original jokes and such, learning why it's funny in Japan is fun, and helps us learn more about the people and culture that made the animation we love so much.

I think its important to understand the target demographic for both pieces of media: Where Anime is almost always made with Japanese teens in mind, Disney movies are not. Disney movies are directed towards young kids who haven't grown enough to explore new cultures, so in an effort to make them feel included, it makes sense that they change details in their films based on location. In contrast, Anime and Manga are heavily based on Japan and Japanese themes. Its a massive part of the culture that we don't quite have here in the west which is also probably why so many people like it (myself included).

Disney also has more money than a small country just for Entertainment. . and stopped making the kinda Disney cartoon the japanese like in the 90s . They definitely love disney princesses , Princesses , and Character like elena and feminine warrior princesses in flowery gowns are a staple of a lot of japanese animations . Anime look was built on top of disney big eyed cuteness of disney princesses . New disney ? I am not so sure they care that , Toy story 4 Definately got it asss beaten by One Piece Movies sale in japan .And I don't particular think they care about Disney live actions or Pixar-disney. . You've literally never heard the word ratatouille before, have you? :P Edit: Also, the purpose of having a single international version isn't anything to do with it being more or less work for the translation team - translating individual phrases is trivial. The reason for it is rendering time. Each different version needs to be rendered separately, which is a huge investment of time (and money).

I just wanted to add a note about the American flag flying while Buzz Lightyear was giving a rallying speech to the other toys. It was not just a random added show of “American patriotism” but actually a play on George C. Scott's speech in front of an American flag in "Patton". He was the general giving a speech to the troops and while he is talking, the American flag appears behind him and the national anthem plays.
