Turning Red Movie Description:
Mei Lee is a 13-year-old girl who is torn between being her mother's obedient daughter and the chaos of her youth. As if that were not enough, when she gets too excited, she turns into a big red panda.
Turning Red is a 2022 American animated coming-of-age fantasy comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was directed by Domee Shi, in her feature directorial debut, and written by Shi and Julia Cho. The film stars the voices of Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong.
Set in Toronto, Ontario in 2002, Turning Red follows Meilin "Mei" Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who transforms into a giant red panda when she gets into a state of strong emotion. Inspired by Shi's experiences in Toronto, the film began development in 2018 after she pitched it to Pixar in October 2017. It is the first Pixar film solely directed by a woman and the second to feature an Asian lead character after Up (2009).
After a special screening that took place in London at Everyman Borough Yards on February 21, 2022, Turning Red had its world premiere on March 1, and was released on the Disney+ streaming service on March 11, along with simultaneous limited runs at the El Capitan Theatre, AMC Empire 25, and Grand Lake Theatre in the United States and Showcase Cinema de Lux in the United Kingdom. It was released theatrically in most countries without Disney+, and received critical acclaim for its story, humor, animation, vocal performances, and use of culture.

I presume they hate it because it is an almost uncomfortable reality of womanhood. I am not a woman, I'm not Asian. I don't meet the archetypal audience for this movie. Yet. I adored it, was so well made and the soundtrack was phenomenal

I hear ya. I grew up with A Goofy Movie, and both films touch on a lot of the same messages. There's just a different flavor to this one that makes it more impactful to demographics I'm not a part of. That doesn't keep me from enjoying it, though. Regardless of gender and cultural background, it's the human condition

You immediately gained my respect for not being one of those dudes who “can’t enjoy” or bash this movie for supposedly not being able to “relate” to it or find it “cringe” just because the cast is mainly teenage girls and women, but instead openly enjoying it and showing emotion, too. Especially as you said you judged it at first but still gave it a chance! It’s embarrassing that men who hate on the movie probably think they have such macho energy but it’s actually guys like you who are the ones who appear the most confident and secure in their masculinity, which is super dope 👍

Truth. I'm a guy and I LOVE this movie. I'm from Toronto, so I like seeing my hometown too. Guys who hate on this movie probably also hate on any movie with a female lead for being "forced feminism"or some shit(like the guys who hate the Star Wars sequels for no reason.)

@@phousefilms Love to hear that! I think it’s a great movie and a lot of people are jumping on the hate train just because it’s trendy or just to have something to counter I guess. I do understand that there are people who don’t like it just because it’s not their cup of tea and that’s completely fine. But in that case you should just be able to move on.. Not every movie has to be meant for you. And you’re absolutely correct. It takes a special kind of insecurity or some kind of deep hatred for women to feel personally offended by anything with a more female bias. I think the saddest part is probably how I’ve seen guys who defend movies like this or openly support similar things get called panderers and “simps” and what not by other men. You just can’t win. But oh well, that’s just another sign of their insecurity if you ask me 🤷♀️

This movie is ridiculously accurate to the experience growing up as a second gen kid of an Asian immigrant and I bawled multiple times throughout the film because of how incredibly relatable it was. Watching this was honestly one of the most cathartic experiences I've ever had as a moviegoer and I'm honestly deeply grateful that it exists because I never thought I would be able to explain the more difficult aspects of my upbringing to people without the same experience. Thanks to this movie, I now feel like I can, and in a way I think it helped me deal with some tough aspects of my emotional healing journey that I wasn't fully able to before. The scene where Mei Lin leads the child version of her mother through the forest so her mom can finally "grow up" and become the mother she needed to be is literally the best part of the movie and imo the best visual/onscreen representation of generational trauma I have ever seen, I'd argue even better than Encanto's depiction of it (although that's probably a matter of personal opinion and depends on which film you relate more to based on the specificity of your own life experiences). The concept portrayed is actually backed up by a lot of current trauma research/therapy techniques - the idea that someone who undergoes some kind of emotional trauma in childhood gets "stuck" psychologically at that age and in some ways never fully matures unless they are able to heal and move beyond the trauma. Mei Lin's mother was a damaged child piloting an adult body...attempting to parent another child. That was why she passed on the cycle of the same behavior that her mother displayed towards her despite ironically recognizing on some level how terrifying her own mother's behavior actually was. Until that "growing up" scene, she lacked the self awareness to realize that she was repeating the same behavior and damaging her own daughter the way her mother had damaged her. It was only after going through that process of healing that she could move on, truly grow past the damaged child who had gotten stuck, and become the mother Mei Lin needed her to be. I've worked on this kind of thing in therapy sessions before and the accuracy of how it was depicted in this movie is absolutely astounding. Tbh this movie is brilliant and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves

The rawness of Ming the mother acknowledging she messed up and actually apologizing without any backhanded remark or excuse, that’s the good fucking food, that’s all I ever wanted from my emotionally neglectful and abusive mother, and I know I’m not alone in that. One of my favorite parts is when Dad reaches into the Tim Hortons box for a Timbit, and Mom slaps his hand and says, "No sugar!", but a few minutes later, when Mei screams and Mom is distracted, Dad reaches into the box and sneaks a Timbit. 😆

This was SUCH an accurate depiction of the Asian immigrant kid experience, and especially the experience of a young teen trying to clumsily figure things out about herself and the world. The deptiction of healing intergenerational trauma was masterful. What I love is that this movie so clearly shows that there was no one right way to be and no one choice that was empowering for everyone. The best choice for Mei to be true to herself was to keep the panda, but the best choice for Ming to be true to herself was to transform it, because they were both very different people with very different pandas. For Mei, her panda was a source of happiness and expression and fun and authenticity, but for Ming, her panda was a source of trauma and pain and made her LESS authentically herself and who she wanted to be. And I'm so glad the moral of the story wasn't that "they all just needed to learn to love and accept their pandas and let them out." Because while that was demonstrably the right choice for Mei, it was demonstrably the wrong choice for Ming. Even Sun Yee presented all of them with the choice, and behaved lovingly towards all of them, whatever they chose, without judgement or disappointment - she held the portal letting them transform their pandas if they wanted to, and flew with Mei when Mei chose to keep hers - she helped ALL of them in their choices. And what I love is that Ming DID learn to love her panda, when she was able to take the choice to transform her panda into something that couldn't hurt or traumatize her anymore, so she got to be herself and love on her panda in the tamogotchi, rather than suppress and ignore it. It doesn't make Ming fake or wrong or "not accepting/loving herself" or not being authentic, and I'm so happy that both choices were presented as equally valid and empowering when they truly were made as each individual's CHOICE, and not forced or expected. Ming's first panda transformation was suppression due to expectations, and after she healed from her trauma, she was able to transform her panda the second time into something she could acknowledge and love. Keeping the panda out wasn't the right choice for her to be able to love it, transforming it in a non-suppressive way was how she could be her authentic self and love her tamogotchi-panda, and that's okay. It's so important to me that this movie shows that making the empowering choices that are true to yourself and allow you to be your true self may be opposite choices to the people around you, including the people you love. By the very end, both Mei and Ming respect each other's choices, are not judgemental or disappointed, and recognize that their way wasn't the only right one. The right choice for one person may be completely opposite from LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE and that is okay, and making the "expected" or "societally approved" choice doesn't mean you are any less authentically yourself than the person who is breaking the mold, if that choice is truly authentic to you.

You had to be part of the Tamaguchi fad to understand the significance. Keeping a Tamachi alive was a _HELL_ of a lot of work. It was worse than babysitting someone's kid. The fact that Miriam kept Mei's Tamaguchi alive meant that Miriam was really, _really_ Mei's friend and still cared very much about her.

Man I wish I had my bi awakening at 13/14, would've saved a lot of confusion early in. x3x It's a shame that Disney is still being shit about LGBT rep but not surprised given the Don't Say Gay bill. At the very least there's a tiny bit saved, but only a bit just so that they can cut it for overseas.... (But at least still enough for me to ship) I was amazed to hear that Priya was bisexual like me tho, and considering she's my favorite of Mei's friends even moreso.

I really liked this movie--it felt believable and was well-written. Even though I'm a guy, I could understand Mei's journey during the story. The red panda designs of Mei and her family are adorable. also, one of the little things that I saw someone point out is the gag with the body odor--red pandas, apparently, have very strong scent glands irl. Kind of a neat little factoid that they slipped into the story, as it's both an allegory to people developing BO and a fact about red pandas.

I love this movie as an older guy simply because I have had the opportunity to watch the kids I raised become parents themselves and I see SO much of the turmoil I had with the kids repeating with the babies. I know how lucky I am to have the kids I do and proud of the parents they've become. I know I was a party-pooper, a disciplinarian, and... Well... I was a sucker too, at least according to the adults they are now when they're reminiscing. This movie brings all that with it and carries it all so well that I got all misty-eyed.

I feel like people arent seeing the real issue here. I know the way she acts out in a way isnt alright or okay. But that just shows how controlling her mom was and how she expected so much from her daughter since she was little. Pressure to succeed and be perfect just because your parents brought you into the world. Its generational truama.

I mean yeah, that's kind of the whole point? When your kid has proven to you time and time again that they can be trusted and that they are a good kid and you still dont let them have any freedom then they're going to act out and go behind your back. It doesnt make it okay but it makes it understandable, because they're kids and their prefrontal cortexes havent been fully developed yet, which is the decision making part of your brain lol

I also was a 13 year old girl in 2002 and I just watched this with my preteen daughter. Afterward we talked about times I'd embarrassed her in front of her friends, and times my parents embarrassed me. My husband was going to watch it with us but he steered out of the room pretty early on.

Trust me bro, it’s better like that. I’m a senior this year and freshman year I got really sick. I had a huge friend group, and every single person abandoned me but three of my friends. Looking back, the people that left me behind weren’t true friends, but the three that stayed nurtured me and brought me back to health. They are the realest friends I think I’ll ever have.

I absolutely adore this movie. Its got a good life lesson awesome anime style comedy and a great script. I saw this movie numerous times cause its so well made. An absolute beautiful movie. Notice in one frame it goes black and white when the mom transforms like a manga page.

This movie reminds me of those John Hughes films that were just meant to accurately portray the teenager's experience, & I very much enjoyed it. I loved how you kept saying parent sentences like "I'll put my foot up your..." The music was also made by (get this) Billie Eilish.

Regarding the "smelliness". Red pandas aren't bears like the Giant Panda - red pandas are in the superfamily Musteloidea. They're related to skunks, ferrets, and raccoons.

I love this movie. Most people see this Mei's red panda as a way of tackling "puberty" but I see Mei's red panda more as trying to deal or live with a split personality disorder. As someone who has a family history of Blind Rage Syndrome, suppressing it completely like Mei's mum can be a very bad and destructive thing, but I found years ago that letting it out in little bursts like Mei is for me at least healthy as I don't get amnesia or fatigued for days afterwards.

I thought this movie SLAPPED. Reminded me a bit of Spiderverse in some areas (self actualization and 2D animated elements) and the score was done by Ludwig Goransson, who did Black Panther, Creed and Mandalorian so you know it was gonna be 🔥

The reason why Pixar, and in more recent years Disney Animation, have been consistently good. Pixar has something they call The Brain Trust, where it's basically test screening for their employees while they're developing their films and give the employees an opportunity to give notes. For example, in the original Toy Story, Woody was full on a bully in early drafts. But because of the Brain Trust, they recognized this and made the change. They started this at Disney Animation as well after, I wanna say, Ed Catmull took over. If you wanna read more, I highly suggest Creativity Inc. by Ed Catmull. It's basically a full history of Pixar and how to be a good manager in one book.

I would totally keep the red panda if that were me. _"My Panda, my choice mom!"_ Just the music alone is so awesome and fits to perfectly with these scenes. Pandas Unite / Nobody Like U (Reprise) is such a good mash up, the two songs just blend so well together and makes it that much more powerful.

PIXAR has been the bomb since Toy Story, sure not everything they made was a hit, but you sure can remember it, like the Cars Trilogy or the Planes Spinoffs, i didnt find them BAD per se, just underwhelming and i can deal with underwhelming.

I went to my first concert alone with my friends when I was 13! Actually in the same city this movie is set in, and just a few years before LOL So pretty accurate there!

Love your Hey Arnold! Shirt, that was one of my childhood shows haha. I relate to this movie quite a bit since my mother was overbearing much like Mei's. I wasn't allowed to go to parties, dances, forget having friends. I wasn't even allowed to use tampons when I started having periods at age 12. Needless to say I was very sheltered growing up and now at the age of 35 (36 in September gahhh!!) I feel I have missed out on so much, and I don't even feel my biological age. I still feel like a teen sometimes inside if that makes sense. I was obsessed with N'sync and BSB and 98 Degrees lol, all the boy bands...this movie reminded me so much of those days. I only ever got to attend one N'sync concert at the age of 13 but sadly it was up in the nosebleed sections. So it wasn't super enjoyable.

I freaking loved this movie. It needs more praise and recognition! I knew it was going to be an amazing movie when I watched AND IT WAS ONLY 3 MINUTES IN! So yeah, go and watch it people! :)

I’m recently a new subscriber of your channel and I love how attentive you are to, not only the plot, but the visual details as well. I cringed so hard at this movie because it reminded me of how I was when I was in middle school (I’m currently in my mid-20s). However, I also enjoyed it because of that reason as well as the visuals. And yes, this movie takes place within the early 2000s.

I had friends growing up but my parents didn’t let me out that much. All my childhood friends were fake, But in high school I found 2 of the greatest ppl. Also I’m besties with my cousins. I have everything I need. Growing up in a Asian household it is hard to be “free” and independent. Most Asian parents are very strict and close minded ppl. I understand why and I’m not mad about anything. They shaped me into a beautiful and strong women.

Man, it cracks me up when guys watch this movie. Every woman I know who grew up in the '90s or later absolutely gets the NEED to go to that boy band concert (saw N'Sync four times, hi). I know we talk about boys and puberty, but man, there is nothing as intense as the fantasy crush of a teenage girl. Nothing.

This is the film I wished I had when I grew up. In a way, I feel so connected to Mei Lin. I was a very studious person (not academically prodigy smart, but enough to please my parents and my teachers) in my teens and very introverted. My parents are great people, they are kind and loving but I always felt this barrier that I could never open up emotionally to my parents. This is because I knew how much they worked so hard and sacrificed to get my brother and I a better life and better education. So I stayed silent and bottled my feelings to protect theirs because in my mind, they are suffering more than me…if that makes sense. But now I’m feeling the repercussions in my adulthood. I tend to mask my feelings and had to build my emotional resilience as a young adult. I had to rewire my thinking to express myself and that it’s okay to feel vulnerable. I’m still not at the stage to feel comfortable enough to open up to my parents but I’m still grateful that they’ll always love me.

I absolutely love the moment where they first see mei as a panda and shes all sad and they're just like "nbd" and cheer her up with song. her whole relationship with her friends is so pure. Also Abby is my absolute favorite.

EASTER EGGS! (From what I've seen so far at least) 1) 7:32 The boy's shirt has the logo of one of the bands from Coco. You can see it on the drums a scene from when they're in the Land of The Dead. 2) 19:14 Pizza planet delivery car on the right. You can see this car in almost every Pixar film.
