I absolutely love how the animators actually took the time to make sure the piano playing was accurate and he was playing the right notes.
@tacorama

I think back in the day animation could just have someone looking concentrated plus hand movement on a piano and call it good. Now since animations gotten so advanced, it’s almost like it gives more room to add those little details in. Also a lot of musicians must’ve been consulted in technique, movement, and of course the actual notes being played.
@theyarnycaterpillar3563
@theyarnycaterpillar3563 Жыл бұрын
Rigging animations can be made with help of algoritmes. Like they did with the hair in brave. Back in the day, you needed to draw 14 or 12 frame per second by hand🤔 I do appreciate they took the time to animate it correctly. They could choose to be lazy and still expect the same money for it.
@HHLucifer666
@HHLucifer666 9 ай бұрын
@theyarnycaterpillar3563 a lazy way to do it would be to call a pianist and have him play on a motion capture stage. It's more than likely how Pixar did it to keep cost of production down. Yes cgi has gotten advanced over the years but you can just as easily apply that to a motion capture or freehand. Correct me if I'm wrong but they didn't use any motion capture in Brave. It was all done via the cgi program, which you just need to take the mocap motions of, assuming you have the characters modeled already, and apply them.

Even though I love Soul, I wish that it was more grounded in reality (like this, before Joe dies) and that Joe reached the same conclusions about life in a different, more human, less "soul blob hijinks" way. I think it would've made the movie's themes that much stronger.
@RyanKaufman
@RyanKaufman Жыл бұрын
Beautiful idea, wonderful beginning, but it gets so overly lofty and unwieldy once he becomes a blob that it loses quite a lot of the punch. I think Pixar got too creative on this one, they were surprised by how well received Inside Out was, but the missing link is that Inside Out never once leaves the "real" world.

You know, one detail that I think is truly underrated is how even Curly, Joe’s former student in band class, was shocked by the improv. So many teachers out there are like Joe. They have extraordinary talents, but society passed them by and even their students don’t give them their dues. Curly obviously was very appreciative of Joe’s mentorship growing up, but it goes to show just how much someone as ordinary as a band teacher can surprise you.

I remember my band teacher asking me to if I could play the drums for a gig and of course I did because, I needed that cash and also good musicians So when I got there, my band teacher came in half way through and the saxophone player, who was set up the whole thing, ask him to come on and play on a song. I think I feeling that some band kids need or should have is passing solos with your teacher. He was really good, more then I ever knew. He played sax and we passed 2 bar solos for over a minute. I miss him.

This is the first time in the movie Dorothea Williams is introduced. Throughout the movie, she never referrers to Joe by name. She only calls him "teach". Accurate. The whole art of, well, ANYTHING is to let go and let your brain do the walking. Your subconscious is smarter than your conscious mind, so it's a matter, really, of not thinking. That's the one aspect, but the other aspect is that, in order to get to that kind of place as a musician, you need to have enough muscle memory to know what you're doing. Think about typing, even: you're NOT thinking about it, are you/ That' muscle memory, or the Zone, in this case.

So.... I want to give a more personal take. It's very rare that I feel music gets the respect it deserves in film. Usually it's either set dressing or it's more about the history or enhancing the scene and whatnot, but this one scene showed something I've rarely seen a film truly capture, and that's the pure spirit of music. I once was speaking to a professor in an honor band I was in and he referred to it as "The Musical Drug". I don't really know how to describe it, but essentially, say you play the instrument in this scene, the piano. You become the instrument, and the music speaks through you just as you are speaking through the piano when you play. The focus isn't on the individual performer once this happens. Like the piano, they need to be tuned in and at their best performance level. The focus is on the music itself though and how it wants to sound. I found that when I truly listened, music has a direction it wants to go. Sometimes fast, and others much slower. Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Glad to see other musicians love this scene too!

That my friends, is what we call "the flux". See, it is like a trance state that someone can access by focusing on what he's doing, and only what he's doing, and in which you feel that anything you do will work out, not because you work hard, but because you work with passion. It is a state that is commonly accessed by artists, videogames players, or just any fields someone can be passionnate about. And at that moment, anything else becomes useless. You don't feel yourself as you are, you feel yourself as one with what you're doing. At that moment, the piano isn't a piano anymore, it's your fingers. You don't feel yourself breathing, blinking or even moving. At that moment, stress, fatigue and time no longer exist. Your body needs doesn't matter... In fact, the only thing that matter is what you feel yourself doing.

0:22 hear this, it sounds like the piano is playing her part. Okay how does this work, is it the combination of the mic and the saxophone playing together that makes it sound like someone is perfectly mimicking her. I always assumed it was the piano somehow knowing the lines of the improve saxophonist like Ben Wendel (incredible bassoonist too), but it's so perfectly coordinated that it has to be us hearing the mic and the acoustic voice underneath the mic sounding like two matching saxophones.

I would gladly have watched a a Pixar film about a music teacher trying to achieve his jazz musician dreams, adopting a cat, and vibing with his neighborhood, with lots of jazz and other styles of music along the way... But I'm also not the Pixar target audience or a shareholder, so who cares what I think?
