Once upon a time this was Pixar's LEAST popular film. Touted as TERRIBLE back in 2012. So I wanted to look back on it with more of an analytical eye. We've seen some absolutely DREADFUl stuff in the past. And this is not as bad as that. But I do remember disliking it as a kid. So today let's delve through all the details, contexts and explanations as to why this movie was so hate. And to dictate whether this film deserves it's label as Pixar's TERRIBLE Brave Movie...

...I thought this would be like an underdog movie in hindsight. Turns out I was equally as bored the 2nd time around. With more notes on how strange the pacing is... at least it's not The Good Dinosaur.

I've actually always loved this movie, and felt that it received an unfair reputation. Merida and Elinor's relationship was the heart and soul of the story, and watching them grow to gradually understand each other was heartwarming. I also admired that Merida didn't end up with any of her suitors, and chose herself.

Merida's mom turned into a bear not only bc merida called her a beast just before that but also bc she was being overBEARing. It represents how the mother would try to use brute force (emotionally) to get her daughter to be something she didn't want to be out of fear of her daughter's life being difficult due to being different. The bear being unable to speak is the way the bond heals. The mother didn't listen to her daughter and constantly talked over her or down her and only waited for her turn to speak in an argument rather than listening to her daughter. As the bear, unable to communicate, she's forced to listen to Merida so she finally understands her point of view.

The ending and “mending the bond” makes perfect sense to me, here’s why. Merida sewing up the tapestry didn’t work at first because the “bond” in question is her and Eleanor’s relationship, not necessarily a physical object to be fixed but an emotional relationship. Merida calls her mother a beast, claiming that she was never there for her (which isn’t true, Eleanor just isn’t there for her the way Merida wants her to be). The physical representation of their emotional relationship, the tapestry, is then torn by Merida. So when Merida sews it back together to save her mother, it doesn’t work because only the physical tapestry is mended but not their relationship. Eleanor only transforms back when Merida apologizes, admits that her mom was there for her, and justs wants her back, mending Merida’s side of the relationship (it could be argued Eleanor mended her side by accepting that Merida doesn’t have to marry in the bear-mimes-the-speech bit of the film). I think the “sun hitting the tapestry causing the transformation” was a misleading visual. This also explains the common criticism of how Mordu could never mend his bond because his physical bond was made of stone. The physical representation of the bond doesn’t matter nor really needs to be fixed, its the emotional tear between mother and daughter or in Mordu’s case brothers and brother that needs mending. If Mordu could never fix that familial tear, then he can never reverse the spell and become human again.

I was shocked when I heard recently that Brave was not very popular, it’s easily in my top 5 Pixar movies. I've always loved this movie, the animation is gorgeous and the character designs aren't from the same mold that every Disney and Pixar character seem to come from these day. And as far as the story goes, I liked how it felt in between a fairy tale and the reality of what being a princess was actually like. I was really into Celtic mythology and history growing up and it was just nice to see a fantasy story in this setting.

I personally like the beginning where it was more focus on the Mom’s and Daughter’s relationship and how society or environment can affect that relationship. I get it might be cliche or annoying that a story focus on a girl rebelling against the world she’s in or how she’s different, but I think this did feel more grounded. Plus it was meant to focus more on the personal relationships more. I just don’t recall much movies around that time that did have that focus. But I feel like it got rather messy when the bear plot was introduced. Wasn’t the worse, but didn’t like it as much I wanted too. I can see how people like it overall though! I just wanted something else, but that’s just my personal preference. Think that’s why I ended up liking Turning Red when that came out later :)

I actually adored this film. And I still cry at the end. Because the actual main plot of the film is communication. You see throughout the film that there is a communication problem with the family. Specifically between Merida and her mother. That literal scene by scene conversation where Merida is talking to Fergus and Elinor is talking to the dad (I can't remember his name) there is clearly a disconnection between them. And when Merida is telling Elinor about her day she in return doesn't seem to even listen. It isn't until Elinor is turned into a bear when she is able to set aside all the marriage nonsense are the two able to bond again like the flashback implies. Like getting dinner, sleeping together, and relying on eachother. Then later on in the scene where they are in the thrown room again trying to get the tapestry that's the movie showing that Elinor is finally communicating to Merida that she is okay with her breaking tradition which is a pivotal moment for Elinor since her main personality point is being traditional. And lastly and most importantly the ending scene. It wasn't the tapestry being repaired that saved Elinor. Because that's not the bond that needed mended. It was the bond between Merida and her mother. So once Merida apologized to for her hurtful wording Elinor did the bond get mended.

This movie was really immersive I feel. That's what made it so good to me as a kid. I do think that the side story about the king who torn his family apart from pride mixes in with Merida. It was later revealed in the story that the four kingdoms worked together to fight off vikings, and that lately their relationship was growing weak. The whole point of the marriage was a last effort to bring the kingdoms together and her mother didn't want her to ruin that. She taught Merida that a princess was supposed to put her pride aside and do what was needed. But I like that later in the story, she realized it was unfair and wrong for everyone. In conclusion, it made sense where she was coming from.

Dazz is being very critical. This movie is not about woman’s masculinity or whatever it is about Merida’s and Eleanor’s relationship. The castle scene when Merida was “spelling out the conclusions” is actually her reacting along with the audience. The bear story that Dazz was talking about how bland it is and how similar it is to brother bear is missing the picture because ultimately the reason why the mother isn’t a bear for so long is because that conflict is a symptom to the real conflict of their relationship. The death of Mor’du and the stone falling was good, audiences are rewarded for guessing how some things are going to pan out. The “Spelling it out at the end” is bullshit spelling it out would be if Eleanor said “we both have, we mended are relationship and attitude” that “we both have” is perfect. I could go on and on but one lay thing if you take apart and extrapolate everything you are going to suck the joy out of every movie you see, sometimes things can just be.

I’ll admit I still have fond memories of this coming out in theaters over 11 years ago and seeing this in theaters. I know 11 years later, it’s not one of Pixar’s best films and the tonal shift in the story is very obvious due to the production troubles caused by John Lasseter firing the original director Brenda Chapman, but it’s not really a bad film. Sure, I can understand how the mother turning into a bear could break the film for a lot of people, but for it’s other aspects like its animation and it’s achievements for a Princess story like having a mother-daughter relationship be the central relationship and the daughter and dad having a good relationship without any arguments and the dad being supportive of his daughter’s desires and the Princess not ending up with one of the Scottish Lord’s sons at the end. It’s because of this film we’re starting to see more Disney Princess films not have a Princess end up in a romantic relationship like Moana. So regardless of what you may feel about the film, you can’t deny it’s positive influence on later Disney Princess films.

When I watched it as a kid I didn't see this movie as trying to push the feminist agenda. To me it was just about a parent and child not seeing things from each other's side and over time learning the value in the other's skills. That is why to me the scene of Merida sewing the tapestry worked since it was her showing that she appreciated her mother's efforts. Though one thing that always threw me off was at the ending when they only showed Elinor appreciating Merida's interests and failed to show Merida doing the same.

Maybe I'm biased but I feel like every single criticism he gave was either just completely incorrect, or it was technically valid but wasn't even a bad thing and didn't really matter a lot to the overall plot of the movie, and it was all destructive. Did we watch the same movie!? Brave has an amazing story about Communication, the fact Eleanor turns into a bear makes sense, and it lets Merida (who often then not got spoken over by her mother) speak for once, letting her mother understand her daughter better and see who she actual is as a person. The entire plot makes sense! And it's honestly communicated perfectly in the movie in my opinion. I feel like you were just overly critical on this one because this movie has its reasons for many of the things going on in it.

When I was younger, I went to see this film when it debuted in theaters with my Mother. Being a boy that often butts heads with my Mother, we both came out of this film realizing this touched on that dynamic of parent and child often not seeing things from the other's perspective. To this day, despite my mother hating all things princess, she really loves Merida. She is also Scottish/Irish and thought this was a very serviceable film in that regard. To me, I've now watched this film dozens upon dozens of times in the years since and always enjoyed it. To me, there are far worse Pixar films, even some that objectively are better but just didn't connect with me. Now this film was probably aimed at girls/mothers, but if a younger boy and his Mom came out of this film with a closer relationship and understanding of each other, this film did its job very well. Also, I always like some fun shenanigans in my animated movies which harkens back to classic animation from back at the start with all the whacky things going on.... it's just good fun for the sake of fun, which always makes me smile. Brave is a wonderful movie for me, plain and simple. :)

I liked the first half of the movie with Merida vs her mom and showing the different values of each lady. The scene where Merida shoots for her own hand is brilliant, showing the power that the queen holds and how Merida turns to face her in the end was amazing. I think it really had a consistent plot up until the bear antics which is where they lost me.

So this movie was directed by Brenda Chapman, The first female director in Pixar's filmographic history. She only previously ever directed one other movie, That movie was the Prince of Egypt. And John Lasseter fired her. . . . Some have speculated this was because of misogyny. However I disagree. If John Lasseter was a misogynist he would've LET HER COOK. As a conservative scottish male i can tell you that this movie is absolutely amazing and always has been. The whole argument about breaking tradition with gender roles is absolutely fucking stupid. I have a sister who is 5 and acts just like Merrida because she wants to be like dad. The whole point of the story is the mom understanding her child for who she is instead of trying to turn her into herself. Its not about breaking gender roles or making a statement about wemon being better than men. The men in this movie are portrayed as actual men, they are big, tough, and rough. And no where do we see them being portrayed as stupid idiots they are just simply acting like men, and the women are portrayed as proper women that worry about how they look in public unlike the guys who just dont fucking care. Merrida is just a tomboy character that wants to be like her dad and hes all for it but the mother sees this and is afraid because back then it was looked down apon for females to act like this and as a mother she wants to provide and protect her daughter and put her on the path to be as successful as possible. Which is actually what happens, after listening to her mom she understands the situations and changes her veiw on how to handle and deal with it. Thats why she is able to calm the clans near the end of the movie. Both her and her mother finally understand each other and thus they come out on top with personal growth and understanding. Its a great story and one that shows its ok to break tradition every now and then.

I think you may misunderstand the beginning of the movie. People didn’t dislike the movie for being bad in terms of quality. The first act was really good, only for the movie to inexplicably turn into Brother Bear in the second half. The first act does a really good job establishing Merida’s rebellious nature and physical prowess, while also establishing the queen’s political prowess and showing us how the two often butt heads over their differences of opinion. The first act all culminates in the archery scene where Merida is being rebellious within the parameters set by her mother, and her mother loses her mind and throw’s Merida’s bow into the fire. The first act was hella good writing, very well written. The second act derailed nearly all that was established, and did not deliver on the promises made to the audience by the first act. The movie isn’t disliked because it’s bad, (it is in fact one of my favorite movies ever), it is disliked because it could have been GREAT

The story goes that they came out as similar times, and the advertisers mixed up the Disney and Pixar logos. Think about it.
