So yes, Joy can be a villain and still be the protagonist.

In regards to the part where joy is mentioned as a possible antagonist, I feel like joy (or any other protagonist) COULD also be the antagonist. Sometimes a person causes their own trouble by (in joy's case) forcing themselves to be happy all the time without feeling sadness or anything. Not allowing any other feeling, sweeping things under the rug. Like, a person can be their own enemy. You know? As for the part about Anger, i don't know. I feel like he has just a very bad temper and he didn't have Joy to like control him. I don't think the emotions can feel jealousy or the drive to take someone else's place. Antagonists aren't always the same as villains

I think the leading emotion in a head is determined by the emotion with the most memories tied to them. When we saw all those bubbles inside Riley's head, it was clear the majority of her memories were yellow (joyous)

San Francisco is the villain...

The villain of a story doesn’t always have to be another character. I think the villain is the whole moving process to San Francisco because that’s what started Riley to feel unstable. She hated the new house, she hates school, the moving van with all her things never shows up. She tries to see the bright side but just being there bums her out every step of the way. Yes, anger wanted to be in control but he didn’t intend to change things this drastically and he didn’t actually throw joy and sadness out of HQ. He was actually pretty unnerved by the fact they were gone.

Just came across this channel today and absolutely love it!

I always thought joy was both the protagonist and the antagonist at the same time. See, there is this thing called "character vs self" conflict, and it's actually used a lot. It's where a character battles with themselves to do what is right and also to do what is wrong. In some instances it's just used for the plot and there is a different character that is the main protagonist or antagonist but in some cases the person battling with themselves is both the protagonist and antagonist and it makes for a very interesting story.

Joy is the antagonist of the film because of the way she treats sadness as the unnecessary emotion of Riley's mind.

I've always thought that Riley (and thus also ALL the emotions) were the "villain'. I liked this because the turmoil that Riley goes through leads to a short depression which is quite a new and relevant subject for Pixar to deal with. The thing about depression is that it is not a fight between the hero and the villain but rather that things just don't add up internally, that you can't control your emotions, that your expectations are too high or something else. So it is an internal battle between wanting to do good and not being able to do so. As the film shows all the emotions want what is best for Riley but they are not able to do so because they are not able to work together in the start of the film, and as Riley's feelings becomes more complex her emotions have to do the same. Thus her depression ends when she are able to combine her emotions, and she/the emotions is the hero and the villain for solving and causing the problem. Hopes it makes sense 😊

I would say Joy is the antagonist, if there is one. She thought she was the most important one out of all emotions, always wants her way to be followed, and even left Sadness just so she can return to headquarters. And let us not forget she wants Riley all to herself. One of the reasons I actually like this film is because of Joy's character development. The real enemy is herself, and she realizes that by the end. Although, I really don't consider her as a villain. More like a "real" character that teachers us self realization and that we can't always get what we want. It's a beautiful film that teaches us reality in which flaws exist in everyone, even the protagonist.

The way they decide who's mostly in charge in HQ is for example if something bad happened someone who had anger as their main emotion would get match maybe try and find someone to blame but someone with sadness as their main emotion might run to the room and crying to their pillow
