How's it not a tutorial? It'd be good feedback to know to make future vids better. I believe you'll def be able to install it! I only hope that PixelFX ship better screws now for the N64 kit like they did for the PS2. No clue who thought tapered screws were a good idea with a board that cannot countersunk lol Yup, WiFi is working fine. no clue why it decided to do what it did to get off it. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the mod.

@@PedroPlatinumGaming I didn’t mean it in a bad way at all, I really like the vibe of the video which is why I guess I said “not a tutorial”. Because of the video title and the fact that when you start disassembly you continue the unboxing process and talking about the product rather than telling people “start by removing the screws”. Your ps2 video is specifically labeled hard modding and I think you specifically tell people to start with disassembly and screw removal. That plus the length of the video (10 min vs 20 min) makes your PS2 video feel like a straight tutorial and overview while your N64 seems more like a laid back info session while you just happen to be installing the mod. Granted I know the difficulty of the PS2 video made it longer but I still really enjoyed both!

What do you mean by noticeable difference - like comparing the Gamebox HD64 to the PixelFX Retrogem?

I think there's two parts. The limitations are limited to the game and the console. I find the picture quality of the retrogem to be very good in that it's what you'd get if you'd emulate on PC. I had a much better experience with the gem compared to the 64HD especially when doing captures. That said, I'd like to eventually install my 64HD in another N64 to do a side by side comparison. In tv terms, I can't say I noticed a distinguishable difference between them after doing the switch. In terms of HDMI mods, they're both digital solutions which are the best solutions because there's no analog conversions to cause scaling, color, or other visual issues. Other HDMI scalers that use the multi out or other analog signals will be subject to quality issues as they're working with an analog signal converter from the digital ones to then attempt to convert them back to digital signals to later perform any scaling or other adjustments. Things that may aid in picture quality overall are replacing the electrolytic caps as they do start to go bad after 20+ years. I used a recap kit and found one cap went bad. it however had a minimal impact as the caps tested perfectly fine. so it's one of those 'rake with a grain of salt' things if things are working already working fine. Hope this helps answer you a little.

I think choosing the gem over 64HD is the clear choice, especially now that it seems like development will stop on the 64HD, but I was debating if it was worth upgrading and you've helped me decide to wait for now. In all honesty the 64HD is pretty good as long as you aren't using the stretch display mode and don't use a capture card.

Not sure, I haven't done much in the settings 🤔 I have smoothing deblur and algorithm off, Deinterlacer at motion adaptive, horizontal and vertical interpolation to sharp, and aspect ratio on SDTV1. If it's not settings, then PixelFx may have done some changes between the fpga used for the N64 Digital vs the RetroGem where hardware differences would be the case even if the firmware is up to date. I didn't see board spec comparison sheets when I tried looking it up to see why that may be. It's a great question, and wonder if anyone got both to do such a comparison.

If you ever had the time to do it, you should do a short full screen gameplay of something like goldeneye or the original Turok to really be able to tell clarity. I’m sure there are many more people other than myself that would like to watch a video of how the pixels look full screen, and one of those kinds of games because there are a lot of people that have N64 digital’s. Maybe show off no settings and then maybe what it looks like with smoothing. Follow up question what are your options for smoothing in the Gem?

Agreed! I can't wait till they make their way to the SNES. I can confirm that as of firmware update 2.6.1.17 N64 Basic Edition: Deblur is listed in the changelog. Found out while updating the unit I got for the PS2 install vid. Hope this helps.

The FAT and SLIM PS2 are currently supported. I'm almost done with a vid for a FAT PS2 install. Now that the SCHP-39XXX series has an incompatible power supply and needs to either be replaced by one for the SCHP-5XXXX series and trim the power pins, replace it with an external power supply mod, or externally house the gem. I've chosen to make external housing for now while I think on making a USB C power mod. The SEGA Saturn and 32x aren't yet supported. I'd imagine that would happen once they get the Dreamcast cables and settings ready. I'm curious when they'll have something for the SNES. Currently waiting on delivery of IPA to do just that. I couldn't believe how much flux was on the board alone from the factory let alone the dust that stuck itself on. it deserves a great clean!
