I wonder how many people will get the joke with the drinks...?
Today on Ancient DOS Games Gemini's taking a look at Hugo's House of Horrors, one of the first independently made graphical inventory-based adventures, made by David Gray of Gray Design Associates, mimicking Sierra's popular AGI games such as King's Quest and Space Quest.
This was actually a pretty fair go at doing a game in that style, with only minor issues or shortcomings by comparison to an AGI title. Although, it's a REALLY short game, so it's debatable whether it was worth the original asking price or not. Nowadays though, it's a lot cheaper AND you get all three games in the series when you buy it! :)

3:02 - "Not that you can't track down the shareware versions if you go hunting for them" - well, you could just grab the Game Empires shareware disc. 6:06 - I'm going to point out that Gemini typed in "Looka t mask" and the parser figured out what he was intending to do.

Fun fact, the first screen (house exterior) and several other backgrounds/screens in the game are just old clipart. If you just do a search for "haunted house clipart" you'll find the house he used quickly, even the bat graphics that are used throughout the game are from that image.

You can actually return to the top of the house after passing the dog. You're able to pick up the chop as soon as you throw it without the dog harming you. Clearly an oversight as you're able to overflow the score counter by doing this. I was one of those people who grew up with this game pre-Internet. Finding the questions for that man took a few days of research, asking several people who knew them. It was actually the first time I had heard of both LoTR and Narnia series, and I can credit this very game which helped me learn to spell 'pumpkin'.

I knew the the answers to the Hobbit and Narnia questions, but I had to ask my mom about Roy Rogers. I had to use the encyclopedia for the Dracula question. I simply got the pan galactic gargle blaster question through process of elimination. I did figure out the riddle on my own.

I found ScummVM to be an excellent emulator for old adventure games. It's incredible how something that started out as a poject exclusively for the emulation of SCUMM based games (mostly the LucasArts point-and-clicks), turned out to be great for emulating other interpreters as well, including the Sierra graphic adventure interpreter, which was hugely popular in the late 80s and early 90s. If a game runs on ScummVM, I would always prefer to play it using that and not through DosBox, as to me, ScummVM feels like a more accurate emulation, for speed, sound and visuals.

Text adventure games tend to not employ the verb "USE" because it's too generic. Maybe Mr. Gray decided to build on that tradition. Or, since it looks like he was using a two-word parser (with one word identified at the beginning of the string and one word at the end), maybe he was trying to avoid verbs that would encourage additional words in sentences (such as USE KEY ON KEYHOLE). I honestly don't remember using USE in a Sierra game, but I probably assumed it wouldn't work! I like how this video didn't attempt to avoid story and puzzle spoilers, but then, I've completed this game before. :)
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 6 жыл бұрын
+RadioPoultry For a game as short as this one, covering it at all essentially means spoiling it. Also, the game IS doing more than two-word checking. For instance, if you try "PLUG BOAT" it'll ask you what you intend to plug it with. Or, if you try to push a button in the lab, without specifically typing in to tell Igor to push the button, it'll complain that Igor is better suited for pushing buttons.

I was one of the "lucky" ones who had an earlier version of the shareware where the old man wouldn't let you pass because the game was unregistered. Super frustrating after spending days finding out the answers to some of his earlier questions! Luckily I found a way to sneak by him using the mask and finish the game anyway. ;)

6:00 a grotesque monkey mask in the closet, omg. True story: at one point I moved into an old wooden building, built at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, and the only thing the previous owners left behind was... a grotesque monkey mask in the closet. Seriously. It was a hilariously creepy story all by itself, but now I'm thinking, there's a small but realistic chance it was a Hugo's House of Horrors reference. Hah!

Stupid old man questions. Still one of my fondest remembered games I played in the early 90s. Hex editing? Hm, is there any commands in the game that aren't used in normal playthrough? I found things in Hugo 2 that I didn't actually expect the game to count as an object to look at.

Just out of curiosity, how many of the old man's questions were you able to get *without* a walkthru? (I myself would've been stumped at the one about Roy Rodger's dog as I don't even know who Roy Rogers *is* )
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 6 жыл бұрын
+Jispy Moe Dantes Five... technically four. The riddle about what can and can't fly I tried to answer "human" and it wouldn't accept it. The two I otherwise couldn't get were the Narnia and Roy Rogers questions. :P
@EdmondDantes224
@EdmondDantes224 6 жыл бұрын
I remember the quiz part stumping me as a kid. Really just seems odd to design a game to require knowledge of things external to the game itself. Of course, nowadays I've read every Chronicles of Narnia book and I'm trying to memorize Tolkien so anything based on those two is easy pickin's, but old TV shows.... ehm... I might know Dragnet and Perry Mason but that's about it. And yeah the "can and can't fly" one... that's just confusing. My problem was I thought it must refer to like penguins or something. In a lot of ways the Hugo games are badly designed but since most people got them for essentially free it was hard to really mind. Hugo III: Jungle of Doom was the first adventure game I beat without a walkthru. Hugo II: Whodunit on the other hand is absolute B.S. (Incidentally there's a Doctor Who reference in that one so watch some Tom Baker episodes before playing it)
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 6 жыл бұрын
+Jispy Moe Dantes Designing a game in this way by having random trivia is more a way of padding out the game to make it feel longer than it actually is, rather than solid game design. As you saw, I could beat the game in just over 5 minutes once I knew exactly what to do. :P
@EdmondDantes224
@EdmondDantes224 6 жыл бұрын
And I'm sure the "Did you register this game?" question in the Shareware version was supposed to make people think the game was literally unbeatable unless they registered (which of course it wasn't unless you're so honest that you can't lie to a nonsentient computer game). Still better than that damn box of matches in the second game where you have to cross the bridge absolutely perfectly or they get wet and become unusable...

Wait, this was a high price game in 1990? I mean even by 1990 standards this would look like retro. You had full VGA games by then and the PC was slowly starting to surpass the Amiga. Sure, it was a one man project and it's like how indies are today but that means it should be a budget title.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 6 жыл бұрын
+Imgema I think the reason David Gray got away with charging as much as he did is because of the lack of competition and the high quality expected due to Sierra's titles. The price wasn't as high as a boxed commercial game, but still more than a typical shareware game at the time.

Yeah, it wasn't until I built an old PC to play old games, that I realized... everything GOG sells is updated to run on modern systems, which is nice, but it means it's frequently impossible to run the games on the systems that they originally supported.

I don't know about the change of direction to attempts at humour. I quite liked the original format.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 6 жыл бұрын
+stuntaneous Part of the reason for the change as well is that a few people have been taking me TOO seriously, and truly, I'm not even a remotely serious guy, even though I sound it, so I'm trying to take the edge off a bit. Most people like the change so I'll be sticking with it, but rest assured it's not going to get excessive and the vids will still primarily be info about the games themselves! :B

+Leonard Greenland Haven't had time to work on it properly, but that will change soon. I'll be officially announcing how I plan to get GMG going again in the upcoming filler video, but the basic gist is that it's better than I turn GMG into a sort of monthly update thing instead of trying to do a weekly step-by-step showcase of the process, which literally eats up some of the time I should be spending actually making the games involved. :P
