@@rosemariemcgowan6388I agree with Ronald Howard, who's also a doppelgänger for his father, and Howard Marion-Crawford is definitely my favourite Watson. He wasn’t a fool nor old, but a doctor who'd been decommissioned from the army following an injury. However, though I enjoy Basil Rathbone he’s nothing like the Conan Doyle Character, far too one sided. I liked Peter Cushing who gave glimpses into Holmes's dark side and his significant unpleasant personality traits.

People might be interested to know that Rathbone, Bruce and Henry Daniell, who plays Moriarty, all served with distinction in the British Army in the First World War. Bruce and Daniell were both seriously wounded and were invalided out of the army, Bruce being wheelchair bound for some time, while Rathbone was awarded the Military Cross for bravery.

Mr. Rathbone came to Lubbock, Texas, with his one-man show, An Evening with Basil Rathbone, in 1962. He was an exquisite gentleman to everyone, including two hours he gave us at a reception in Texas Tech's Student Union Bldg. Everyone was grateful to have met this elegant and refined star, whose performance was an unforgettable night of theatre all acting students learned from.

"Very decent of you Old Chap, I must say" Watson, when he found out Holmes gave up Moriarty, to save him. Beautifully English in it's sentiment, and then Holmes' response... "Can't afford to lose you, Old Fellow" It shows a brotherly love, perfectly executed, without being overly sappy. I love these films.

Yes, but addiction to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is hard to satisfy. What I like most about Rathbone were his disguises. Having been a spy during WWI and all the aliases he must have portrayed, the sub-characters he played in Sherlock Holmes lends an insight to his mastery of disguise as "the spy".

This film was shot in Hollywood by Universal Pictures. There were so many Brits living in Hollywood in its "Golden Era" you could cast a film with a British setting with scarcely an American-born actor aboard. However, Hillary Brooke, this film's femme fatale, is from Astoria, Queens in New York City but affected an English accent throughout her career, in which she graced both dramas and comedies.

Also notice that the first Moriarty was about 6'2" and weighed around 160 pounds, whereas the second was around 5'8" and weighed around 200 pounds. Now, I know he was a master of disguise but that is pushing the boundaries of probability too far.

It took my whole 66 years to watch a complete Sherlock Holmes episode. Both Basil Rathbone and Henry Daniell dueled with my Hero Errol Flynn, of course they lost. Rathbone was an expert swordsman in real life and could have disposed of Flynn handily. I actually enjoyed this and will watch some more. It helps an American to watch English movies to sharpen their vocabulary. What we speak here is not English!

If you like Rathbone and Bruce as Holmes and Watson then you should listen to some of the old radio programs they did as Holmes and Watson. I think the radio episodes are generally better written than the films. Very atmospheric. There are many websites where you can find these radio programs. My favorite is otrrlibrary.org. The radio programs were once a week and each was performed twice, once for the east coast and then later for the west coast. If you're good at voices you can hear a lot of the same character actors from the films turning up on the radio program.

Absolutely excellent film, top quality. Thanks for posting, so we can enjoy. I'm sure that if I'd seen this as a child in the seventies or eighties, I may very well have dismissed it as a stupid black and white, old film, whereas now after having seen a thousand inferior colour films, I concede that this and similar films (all Rathbone Sherlock films, for example) are excellent, top class. I enjoy watching and re-watching these films. It's a shame that there aren't as many, worth while films being made nowadays (during past few decades). It's strange, as I'm not known for being an old stuck in the mud type, it's just that the truth is what it is, however untrendy, unfashionable that maybe.

It's a common illusion for people to fall into, that old movies are better than what they make nowadays. But if you were to sit down and watch every single movie made in 1945, you would be forced to conclude that they made a lot of trash back then too. Most movies made in any year are bad. The wonderful thing about the past is that only what's best of it is brought forward with us. We see this movie and we think it exemplifies the movies of 1945. But in fact this movie is atypically good. The bad movies of 1945 (and there were many) have all stayed in the past and are mercifully forgotten.
