"For the world of opera, he has been one of the great pillars, one of the great artists of our days. And it's hard to see one more big artist leave us. It has been a difficult year, losing also Beverly Sills, Regine Crespin, Teresa Stich-Randall. In the last months, but this, of course, the losing of Beverly and Luciano, for the whole general world, not only the operatic world, but for the names that they were, it's very, very, very sad."

"I think the career of Luciano was bigger because I was there as the friendly rival. And I think my career has been bigger because he was there, also as a friendly rival. This is what I have said and what I believe. Always when you have somebody there and to you have the responsibility and the dedication to this, things just happen better."

STORYLINE:
The operatic tenor Placido Domingo paid tribute on Thursday to his old friend and rival Luciano Pavarotti, who died of pancreatic cancer, aged 71.
He said that they were the best of friends and the best of rivals for 40 years, and said their rivalry made them both better men and better tenors.
Domingo is director of the Los Angeles Opera and was in the middle of rehearsals for the season's opening weekend when he heard that Pavarotti had died in his hometown of Modena, Italy.
"I think the career of Luciano was bigger because I was there as the friendly rival." he said, "And I think my career has been bigger because he was there, also as a friendly rival."
Domingo said he spoke regularly with Pavarotti during the past year as he battled against pancreatic cancer.
Domingo said Pavarotti was cheerful, vibrant and productive to the end. The last time they talked was about eight days ago, when Pavarotti told him he wanted to produce a religious album for Christmas.
They made plans to see each other the following month and there was no final goodbye.
"Let's remember the beauty of his voice, the great career that he had, and the friend that we all have lost," Domingo said.

Luciano did not possess the musicianship or acting ability of Placido, but it was obvious he had the greater voice. His sunny, larger than life, personality and charm warmed me towards him so much. They were very different tenors. Plscido, more dramatic and Luciano a lyric tenor with a beauty of tone that we will never hear the likes of again. His singing was Bel Canto, which the great singers of the past were trained in. Jose Carreras, before his lukimia was the most romantic tenor with a very beautiful voice. He too was a great artist. Pacido was genuinely sad that this irriplacable tenor had passed away, as I was. His singing in Verdi's Requiem was very beautiful.

I agree with you. Lucianos voice was one of the kind. And his personality was so lovely. And the true emotions he felt when he was singing. Those things made people love him so much. May the beloved Maestro rest in peace.

He was one of the best opera singers in the whole world, every opera singer in comparison to him shrunk into insignificance people from all over the world who aren’t even into opera know the name Luciano Pavarotti. Xxx

He said that Luciano's career was bigger because he was there as a rival and vice versa... Really? Excuse me, but there's really no competition. Luciano was in a different league than every tenor I know. Saying this, I also acknowledge how great Placido is. However, Luciano is higher than him. Now that the greatest is gone, I think Placido can FINALLY take his spot as the prime tenor. Luciano will live forever in the hearts of those who love Opera and classical singing...

Different voices, that is clear. Lucciano seems to me more clear, with more light and shine. But Placido´s voice is more like and old red wine, with a lot of flavour, more dramatic, darker, more dense... and also beautiful to listen. It is just a matter of taste to me

EsenZial No, he is not. Pava had a superior voice and a lovely personality. But if you mean acting, there you might be right. But the voice, the technique and the real passion - Pavarotti was way ahead of all the rest.

I agree with you otherwise, but he was actually one of the pillars - the biggest, and the strongest one. Just think how much he gave to the opera world and the world in general. We lost so much in 2007. I respect Domingo, but he doesn't come close. Luciano was something more than just an awesome opera singer. The soul he had made the difference too.

He was not one of the pillars...he was the entire building. He was the greatest singer of the century and perhaps the second greatest of all time after Caruso. Domingo didn't even come close.

So true. Domingo is great but Luciano was simply incredible. The unbelievable, beautiful and strong but still sensitive voice, the warm, sunny and loving personality - and the way he was always so real. Also when he performed. There was nothing fake in it. He truly felt those arias and songs and people saw and felt that too.

absolutely, everyone of importance in the operatic world from his father, mother, teachers fellow singers, including Placido and Jose Carreras, his accompaniment partners, the general uneducated public, he was a cut above the rest. If you had ears, you could hear it. Even scientific analysis of his voice proved his superiority. Do you think any other opera singer by himself..... could fill Hyde Park or Central Park. Operatic voices are the best trained, the best voices in the music world, but his was and shall always remain superior, I think for all time.
