UPS Flight 6 will always be a reminder as to what happens when a cargo fire goes out of control. Working in a Fulfillment Center, they stress that we have to make sure Hazmat labels are placed to where they can be easily readable and scannable without infringing on the shipping label. Rest in peace to the pilots of UPS 6, and I'm glad the pilots on FedEx were able to escape with their lives.
@jonslg2404 ай бұрын
That was a gnarly fire, and a very good example of why any fire indication should be cause for landing ASAP. They took so long on flight 6 wondering "is it really a fire?" that they lost controls because of that. I think the hold of all passenger jets should have cameras. He says no because they're not reliable - but the smoke detection isn't reliable either, thus what happened on flight 6. The cameras add an extra layer of security.

I was a USAF ARFF firefighter for about 6 years of my 38 year career as a firefighter. We once had a C-130 divert to us with "smoke in the cockpit". We sent everything out to wait, and when the plane came in, an egress door was opening even before the plane stopped, and once it did stop, a crew member was out the door and sprinting across the airfield (it only had the normal crew on board), with smoke coming out behind him. We were on it pretty quickly and found it to be a short circuit in some of the aircrafts batteries. There was no fire, but the smoke was thick, acrid and very toxic, and the pucker factor when we saw the smoke was pretty big. Those pilots did the same as these FedEx pilots...got it on the ground as soon as possible, and then got the hell out of the aircraft.

Thank you for picking the pilot up on phraseology. It's important. It makes ATC listen very carefully when they hear MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY. On so many videos I've heard "We have an engine failure, we'd like to declare an emergency" and the response from ATC is "say again". And that is always in the US.

12:40 I used to work baggage handling at EGSS and there’s another aspect to cameras in the hold… When a hold is loaded, it is very rarely light enough where there are gaps that would make any cameras viable. On bin-loaded planes like the ones Kelsey flies, the entire hold is filled with those big containers which would block any view of any sort of cameras that could be placed on the walls. On conventionally loaded planes, like the Ryanair B738s Kelsey used in his B-Roll footage, we generally stacked those to the point where you can’t see past the first row of bags in the hold, let alone all the way to the bulkhead. Tl;dr: the view of such cameras would be obscured by the cargo itself

Can the fire suppression system really do anything to stop lithium ion batteries from burning? The batteries create their own oxygen, so all the co2 in the world won't stop the fire.
@Jabarri744 ай бұрын
@@dannydaw59 Conventional ones wouldn't it seems. Liquid nitrogen or another super cool liquid may get it below its thermal decomposition temperature where it can keep reigniting

This video is a brilliant example of how to analyse and comment these situations. Kelsey makes ONE criticism (the unnecessary transmission from TC regarding having to clear the runway from people) and that is delivered in an objective, military no-nonsense way that acts as a reminder to any TC watching that communication ought to be fast, succinct and straightforward. Very well, sir.

Fast, succinct, straightforward, and _relevant,_ I might add.

Fabulous job on this Kelsey! The detail about the fire suppression system - its ability to continue performing - after it's shot its load - is impressive.

Kelsey, congratulations on earning the rank of Captain! I recently noticed the 4 golden bars on your shoulder boards in some of the recent videos. Would you care to make a video about that promotion? Was there a ceremony or how did you celebrate that milestone? Good video showcasing the calm and methodical pilots who safely landed that infamous FedEx DC-10. Again, congratulation on the promotion!

It being the exact same plane as the hijacked one from years ago, I did not expect that at all. Talk about coincidence.

The Mayday call also triggers the controller to pull in extra controller resources to coordinate additional recourses, like Tulsa Approach & Tower.

There are a couple of things that really come through in your videos. Obviously you are educating the public and helping them understand what is happening on the flight deck and with the airplane but you are also mentoring other pilots and controllers with these critiques. I think that's really great and has the potential to improve everyone's experience in the sky. Thanks for doing this.

Woke up from a stressful night shift to a vlog from you 🎉 great explanation and laughed at your struggle to keep a straight face on blowing the entire load and I'm glad they were closer to Tulsa than 24 hours! It was great that everyone was OK and safe.

The family has been watching older episodes and we just got to the newer ones today. Congratulations on the Captain's bars!!! We were sad when you announced you were pulling back a bit, but we were also hoping you'd find time to spend on the things you enjoy. Thank you for the time you spend entertaining and informing us. We had a question about this one. It was hard to determine scale on the map. Why did the plane do such a huge loop and go back to almost where it started to attempt the landing when they were in such a hurry? Did they need all that lateral distance to lose altitude?
@steriopticon26874 ай бұрын
I bet yes.
@jb56314 ай бұрын
Yes, to lose altitude

Also they had to get lined up on the longer runway while moving in the right direction for the wind, and a 737 has a pretty big turning radius. Note how, when being vectored onto the final approach, the controller isn't sure the plane can make the turn from 210 degrees (flying SW) to 180 degrees (due south, alinged with runway 18) and gives them an option to enter approach from 150 degrees (flying south-EAST) instead. The only reason they'd do that is if they couldn't get turned south fast enough and ended up west of the runway. So, part of that big loop is just the effect of being required to make big turns.
@mikeVT82454 ай бұрын
@@davydatwood3158 Thanks! I figured it was something like that, but I couldn't tell the scale. You mean a 737 can't just corkscrew straight down?! ;) I'm going to have to watch again and listen for the options you mentioned.

Can somebody tell me why there is so many turns around the airport. The animation show them doing all these turns and not just going in strait for a landing. Thanks Great video
@CP-mb7ly4 ай бұрын
It's called approach pattern. Typically airliners need room to slow down and descend, and once you've gone into the pattern it's easier for controllers to spread out multiple planes on approach so they can land one after the other.
