Plane's emergency landing captured on police dashboard camera

A small plane's emergency landing onto a road in Washington state was captured by a patrol officer's dashboard camera on 1 August. The single prop KR2 plane can be seen flying over the officer's car, after which he makes a u-turn and follows the plane as it lands in the centre of State Route 7 in Spanaway, about 40 miles (64 kilometres) south of Seattle.

The plane is called an 'extra'. They're acrobatic planes. He spent a pretty penny on that thing. They're normally moved around by hand like that cause it's so light.

It's not really heavy, though. Empty weight is about 600 pounds, and it's on wheels. And pushing on a moveable control surface (the elevator, in this case) can cause damage. The trooper was trying to help, but if it had been my plane I would have waved him off.

My father could tow his cessna 120 by himself. Small airplanes like that aren't heavy at all. And yes, the cop needs to let the pilot tow the plane. He's damaging the elevator surface. The pilot needs to make sure that elevator isnt damaged before flies it again.

I'm not familiar with that model and the image is too grainy to make out the tail number, but looks like a utility category airplane, so probably around 1000 lbs. if not less. small aircraft like that are designed and intended to be movable by hand. planes aren't exactly all that maneuverable on the ground and piston props can't reverse. Even if it looks cheap, don't be fooled. You probably wouldn't find a used one in airworthy condition for less than 70k or a new one for less than 300k

If you declare an emergency, you have permission as the captain or pilot to do about anything you need to do to ensure the safest result, as long as you can testify your decisions with the NTSB and FAA

Fuel system malfunctions really do happen on small, single engine piston aircraft, although I suspect that this pilot still messed up by not using the backup fuel pump, or not using the fuel tank selector switch correctly

True mark of a professional pilot! He safely lands it on the road (I’m sure he had no other option), and then the first thing he does after getting out of the cockpit is pull the airplane out of the road so as to get out of traffic’s way. Kudos and respect to you, Sir!

All the more credit to him that he managed to keep it on the road . There's a lot more cambervon a road than there is on a runway and roads are never as well maitaine regardless of cpuntry. He was skilled enough not to wipe the undercarriage legs off.

its shot at a lower resolution because of hard drive space. either the video is compressed or its shot at a lower resolution. i had security camera's shoot in 720p for 15 minutes that took up almost 20gigs because i didnt compress it.

Well yeah... Planes are light. They're meant to fly. Have you ever held a really high quality drone? My friend has one that's 3 feet in Diameter, It weighs something like 4-5 lbs and it can carry up to 50lbs (*less with cameras mounted because they needed it lighter for the 10x weight capacity limit) but still that's like Strapping a 3 ear old to the drone and flying him/her around the yard xD

This happened to me back in the 70's. The back roads back then were only traveled by locals so there wasn't a lot of traffic. Guy ran out of gas and landed a couple house down. The neighbors pushed him into a driveway and put him up for the night. The next morning they drove him to the airport to get gas. He put gas in it and away he went. Dont know how old i was but i was young.

It's what cops write down when you go too slow on the road, basically the opposite of speeding, where the car is going at a speed that is significantly lower than the speed limit. It also applies when drivers purposefully stop in the middle of the road, usually to be annoying. Yes that is a thing now. Has nothing to do with the actual traffic itself. In this case he stopped in the middle of the road, but since it was an emergency landing, he probably didn't get a ticket.

The lighter it is, the easier to glide, if it was a heavier plane suffering the same fuel problem, it would have needed a lot more lane to land and it would have started loosing altitude like a bag of bricks

65 over, above, and in excess of the posted limit. Super speeder citation. No displayed vehicle tag citation. No marked 'oversize' or wide load marker. Utilizing turn lane as through lane. No headlights, no tail lights, failure to indicate turn. And all he did was help push the disabled vehicle off the road. I bet the roadside assistance call for 'aircraft fuel' raised some eyebrows...

I saw a huge bounce on first contact with the ground. That plane was carrying way more energy than it needed for landing. I doubt it was "just above stall". In fact, it was an emergency landing and the pilot was probably way more energized than typical landing profiles for that plane.
