The way this movie and "Uncle Buck" end on a still frame of John Candy is heartwarming and sad at the same time.

Good ole Canadian, John Candy. He passed away, way too young. I once met him in his hometown, Toronto. He was a gem! I would say he's tied for my favourite comedian of all time, along with John Ritter :)

I saw this 3 x in the theatres when if first came out w/m y dad and we couldn't stop laughing - Neal's melt-down at the car rental is *chef's kiss* - such a DynamicDuo in Martin & Candy (he and John Hughes left us far far far too early and both are sorely missed) a perfect comedy and holiday perennial watch :D

One of the best comedies of the 80s. John Hughes did so many fantastic films back then Ferris Buelller's Day Off, Pretty In Pink, Uncle Buck, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, The Home Alone films and many more. The plot here lends itself to great comedy scenarios with Steve Martin as the straight guy, and John Candy as the clown. Funniest part is when the car catches fire. I saw this at the cinema on release, and the audience were nearly choking with laughter. A very poignant ending when we realise Del's wife has died and he is in fact homeless. A shame too that John Candy died so young at only 44 and indeed John Hughes himself died very young only 59. Still he left a great legacy of films, of which this was one of his best.

The original cut was 4 hours. There was a sub plot that his wife thought he was cheating. This explains the wife’s actions in some scenarios shown. I wish we could see the full cut! It’s never been released

Again watch Tommy Boy! That movie is very similar to Plains, Trains, and Automobiles. The scene in Plains, Trains, and Automobiles where the car is spinning out of control while Steve Martin is sleeping in the back seat of the car is a lot like the scene in Tommy Boy where the car that Tommy and Richard were in went out of control and going the wrong way on the freeway because the front hood on the car popped open because Tommy left the oil can under the front hood of the car.

Glad you enjoyed this one. This is my traditional Thanksgiving movie that I watch every year. And the ending still kills me no matter how many times I've seen it. Some other classic movies with Steve Martin that you may like is The Jerk, Parenthood, Three Amigos.....John Candy recommendations are Uncle Buck, Only The Lonely, Cool Runnings, Armed and Dangerous and even though he has a smaller role in the movie, Splash is another classic and it stars a young Tom Hanks.

Marian saying he was supicious of Del not even being real is very interesting, because in the original script of the movie (and evidenced in many outtakes), Neal's wife is strongly suspicious that Neal is actually cheating on her, and that Del doesn't exist. --- The extremely dramatic way she greets Del at the end of the movie isn't just her being happy that Neal made it home for thanksgiving, it appears overdramatic because this is the actress reacting to the proof that her husband isn't cheating, and that Del IS in fact real after all.

Some other good movies with things going wrong are: After Hours, Midnight Run, Something Wild, Into The Night, and This Is Spinal Tap. The pillows weren’t his legs, they were his butt cheeks. There are a couple of subplots in this movie that were cut because it originally a very long movie. The guy stealing their money was a pizza delivery guy that Del didn’t leave a tip for. And Neil’s wife was kind of strange in her reactions because she thought that Neil was having an affair and she was relieved to see Del. And yes you guys would love “Uncle Buck”.

Rip to the great one of a kind, john candy. John Hughes, could write movie scripts so fast! Anything john was in was great. Blues Brothers stripes Brewster's millions home alone uncle buck Splash, and on and on. Mostly he had small parts but watch any movie he starred or costarred in. Next should be uncle buck, then stripes. Pro tips...steve martins partner in this is ferris buellers dad! Kevin bacon was in another movie based on this character, He said She said! The plane announcer guy is ferris buellers teacher! The car rental lady is ferris buellers principals assistant! She was a personal friend of Hughes and suggested a clerk do a phone call scene in front of steve. So Hughes gave her the part and it was completely unscripted...she addlibbed the whole thing! The cartoon family guy, does the greatest parody of their motel room arguement scene! The song in the car is by ray Charles, the song he or the kid is jamming to in uncle buck, is also ray Charles! The End freeze frame the exact same as uncle Buck! This was Neil's Groundhog day. He had to learn something, before he could get home. The handshake scene with spit tobacco, was addlibbed, steve martins reaction is real! The song in the car john is jamming to, is by Ray Charles. In uncle Buck, either him or the kid is jammin to another Ray song! Family guy does the best parody of the arguement bedroom scene!❤. The scene of different faces that steve alone on the train, Hughes just rolled, and didnt tell steve, he was filming! Also the movie was about 45 minutes longer but with a subplot.. Neils wife thinks hes cheating and completely makes up the Del story. When he walks through their front door, she had a surprised and shocked look on her face. He basically saved their marriage!

Hi Marian & Joy!😊 This is one of John Hughes fewer known films. He made many films in the 80s such as "The Breakfast Club", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and many more. He also wrote "Home Alone". His films almost always take place in Chicago. In this film they are going to Chicago. Joy caught on that Del might not have a wife before the reveal.😉 Great reactions to this fun 80s holiday buddy film, Kids!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
