Just found out Ryan Reynolds is making a documentary on John Candy. Candy's family gave him a bunch of home movies and helped out making the film. I'm looking forward to it!

This channel is, without a doubt, my favourite KZfaq channel. You have such great stuff.

If you are ever in the Western New York area, several scenes were filmed there. All the highway scenes were filmed on the 219. The diner is also nearby. In addition, all the railroad scenes were filmed in Gowanda. The line is still in use for tourists. They actually still have one of the train cars painted up as “Contrak” but it is in rough shape.

In the words of the immortal Neal Page, “you’re a miracle” for all this background reporting and research! I love this film.

I was so fortunate to have been invited by John Candy himself, to spend the day on set , I was able to get a couple of great pictures. The Braidwood Hotel was the set for the day. One of my best memories. Meeting Steve Martin, John Candy and John. Hughes. Thank you for everything. ❤

I live in the Chicago suburbs and a few years ago I had to drive to Woodstock to pick something up for my dad. While I was there I drove to the town square and took some good pictures of the courthouse where the car gets towed and the the gazebo that they used in Groundhog Day. The town is definitely a hidden gem. Great video! PTA is an awesome pick for your favorite movie ever.

My wife and I got stuck in Chicago in 2000 and was taken to El Rancho for a free overnight stay through our insurance company. And even though we didn't stay in room 6, I can verify with old photographs, that the rooms were identical to the rooms in the movie. The office had photos and memorabilia from the movie and the owner told us filming locations and stories about having lunch with John, John and Steve.

This video replicates the comfortable feel of John Hughes and Chris Columbus movies. Of course we want you to make more like this!

Planes trains and automobiles is one of my favorite films. It has a great vibe in it and it's so funny with Steve Martin and John Candy bring to the Surface as Fantastic actors. A sense of humor goes a long way and making people laugh it's awesome 🥰

I actually saw this movie with a homeless coworker in my hometown. The guy was literally sleeping in his car. I remember he asked me if I wanted to go catch the late night movie with him after we got off work. I had no idea it was going to be planes trains and automobiles. This movie means a lot to me as well. I look at it differently than most people do because of the first time in the way I experienced the film. Great video!

As a person who grew up in the Midwest in the 80’s and 90’s, and has spent a ton of time in the Chicago area, I’ve always been a huge John Hughes fan. But oddly enough, Planes, Trains and Automobiles was one of the few Hughes movies I didn’t see until very late in the game, probably around 2000 or so. But once I did, it instantly became one if my favorites, bringing back so many vivid memories of my life in the Midwest. And it’s also become almost a tradition to watch around Thanksgiving each year for me. The ending has truly resonated with me more over the years, because the first 8 years of my career were a dream. But in the years since, I practically had nothing, and have had to be creative about hiding it and putting on a good face around my friends. But so many images in this movie are like a snapshot of things from my childhood. One in particular is the motel Martin and Candy stay at near the freeway. Even as a kid I remember staying at two story motels like that, with exterior room access, next to a freeway, with a farm fiend nearby, and those bleak, cold, overcast Midwestern fall/winter days.

All this time I thought the "Neal pieces it together" ending was a later-draft scripting change, not an 11th-hour editing change! Amazing the effect great editing can have.

I’m so glad they didn’t go with the ending of having Del follow Neil home for several reasons. For one, it makes Del seem way too creepy and clingy. In the Final Cut, he’s clingy, sure, but he’s just a lonely guy. Following someone like that is too much. Second, the final ending shows that Neil has grown. Before this trip he was more selfish and wouldn’t have cared about Del and probably wouldn’t have even had the emotional capacity to put together the pieces. Him going back to find Del shows that he’s grown as a person.

One of my favorite movies growing up from the 80’s… just the humor and style, the background stuff and outfits. All around great movie and nice ending. And yeah that piecing together part, wow it’s great stuff in short amount of time! Another movie from this era I still like is “Coming To America” 😂

"Enjoyed it" would be such an understatement. Loved it! A great movie whose ending still tugs at my heart just to recall (made all the more so since Candy's far too soon passing); this video helped add a cool new layer to it. And great ending holding up that scene picture to line up with the real street. Gave me a big and much-needed smile. Thank you.

Just based off the photos of the station, you can see the side of the building with new bricks in it indicating a huge remodel. So I would say 100% you are correct that you found the right place. I also agree with you, when you mentioned you were sad about it not looking like it used to. Change and time sucks. So many movies that I love from the 80s have changed so drastically. Watching alot of those before/after type videos just gets me teary eyed. Thats why I love 80s movies so much, atleast there I can still feel the vibe of those days.

Just want to say how much I enjoy this channel. I really like you and the work you do to highlight so many movies I loved from years gone by. Often times you remind me of films I saw decades ago but have completely forgotten. I like PTA a lot and it's always fun to hear you talk about it. I was a boy in the 70's, so I got to see Steve Martin's rise to comedy legend first hand and loved it. I remember him on SNL before I even knew what SNL was (King Tut, Two WILD and CRAZY guys!, etc). I saw him transition to films with movies like All of Me, Roxanna, and My Blue Heaven and others all the way up through his Father of the Bride remakes. He's always been a huge part of my comedic development. While I give Douglas Adams the top spot for people who influenced my sense of humor, Steve Martin would likely take the silver medal. Keep up the great work, Joe!

At the 5:07 mark and at 7:15, that diner is the Olympia restaurant in Gowanda NY not too far away from the fictional CONTRACK railroad line. The train that stalls in the movie. The station they board at on that journey is in South Dayton NY. I live 20 minutes away from there.

I visited the El Rancho Motel twice. Once while the great neon sign was still up. Once after. They had put the sign on the ground behind the motel. Think they were trying to sell it? At that time, it seemed like the motel was more of a long-time living apartment situation. Some very kind ladies showed us about. She let me peek in her room. Which was very much the same as the movie. Think it was room 9. One woman was actually living there when they filmed. If the office would have been open. You could have got a free El Rancho post card. Say you were very close to the Braidwood inn. Well, the motel in Braidwood Illinois they filmed at. I look forward to your next video almost as much as the new release of PT&A Thanks

I watch movies 100's of times over. John Candy and John Hughes are by far my favorite duo. I look forward to your future videos. I don't know if you ever take film suggestions for for future videos but if you ever do, I have some movies in mind. Thanks again for all the work you do on these videos.

I would hypothesize it is a South Shore train station. Dune Park has a very similar layout with those style of benches. That said, Dune Park is Indiana. I cannot recall what all of the stations in Illinois look like though. Millennium Park is underground; Museum Campus puts you near the Shedd, Adler, and Field; McCormick Place puts you at the eponymous convention center. In short I am not sure the stop is Illinois, but I am not sure why they'd venture into Indiana. Granted I've not been at all the stations on the South Shore, so maybe there is one in Illinois that was used.

I swear every video is like a pipeline from my mind to your channel. Every single video is something I’ve been so enamored with and hits so nostalgic to my childhood. If you do an image search for “Wilmette Train Station” there are several pictures of the old interior. Yes, that’s the location.

Whoa! This is a a great movie . . . as I live geography and transportation. I have a friend who lives in Highland Park, IL and we scouted out some John Hughes' locations when I visited in 2021. Also a rail enthusiast, and I know METRA, and a bit of the northern/western rail network.

This is awesome news! I'd always been a fan of John Candy, and love Uncle Buck, but had never seen Planes Trains and Automobiles. It wasn't purposeful, I just said never gotten around to it. After your video I watched it and enjoyed it, but thought the deleted scenes would have made it more impactful and added some emotion. I look forward to the special edition Blu-ray! I totally credit you with this, and hope it can happen for other great movies. Thank you for what you do.
