A real smorgasbord of transport, which included a train, metro, flight, bus and a coach. I travel for 9 hours from Troon, Ayrshire, to the other Troon, but I won't ruin the surprise. Needless to say the Scottish Troon is much better!

As a resident of Troon (the Scottish one) I was most surprised when you got off the plane at Charleroi as I was convinced you’d be going to Troon, a village near Camborne in Cornwall. I never knew there was a third Troon in Belgium. It might be worth doing a Troon Triangle! By the way, did you notice that half our railway station was missing? The buildings on the northbound platform were destroyed by fire a couple of years ago. They’ve got the go ahead to be rebuilt in a style sympathetic with what was there before but suitable for the accessibility we demand of the modern age.
@PlanesTrainsEverything
@PlanesTrainsEverything Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I did have a look at the poor Troon station. I'm glad you mentioned it will be sympathetic, as too many modern constructions are glass and steel and lacking any sort of warmth.

A double-o in the relevant local language is pronounced to rhyme with "dough", not "through", and "Troon" is a homophone for "Trône" in the other official language of that city. It means "throne", as the station is at the Place du Trône / Troonplein - the area being so named because it is next to the Royal Palace.

As soon as I saw the title I thought it must be in Belgium or the Netherlands but it didn’t even occur to me until you were on the flight that it was a place I’ve been many times. This is the issue with bilingual places; I’ve only ever thought of it as Trône because I speak French and not Dutch.

funnily, there is actually another Troon n the UK, (Trwn Ar Usk), however, that does have what could vaguely be called a beach.... mostly it is just a lighthouse though, albeit with a small bothy you can stay at attached... there was an RNLI station there up to 1995ish, gone today.... not bad of a place, but very windy and hard to get to! last I remember, there was a small once a day weekend ferry from Wentlooge in summer (the amazing tides giving a very short window when either jetty was accessible)... most were birdwatchers who just took the round trip, but you had to stay in the tiny hut overnight if you wanted to remain on the island...
