Could the America's Cup go to Britain? - On Course - Episode 11

In the end, the successful defence of the America’s Cup didn’t come as a surprise. As the last few races played out it became increasingly clear that the home team had a much faster boat. What did come as a shock was the talk of what might happen next for the Cup. When the official statement was released by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (Defenders) and the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes (Challenger of Record) there were plenty of raised eyebrows.
Matt Sheahan matches rumour to fact to assess what might happen next for the America’s Cup and whether the trophy that started life in the Solent 170 years ago really could be run in the UK next time around.
Plus, setting a blistering, record breaking pace around the old Fastnet course, the view from onboard the MOD70 trimaran Powerplay.
INEOS Team UK crewmember and seasoned Cup campaigner Freddie Carr and Matt Sheahan catch up to consider where the new Cup boats take us and what the event and the boats might do for the sailing scene.
And, if you thought you had it tough pounding upwind, here’s what some people paid good money to do back in the 1990s when they signed up for the BT Global Challenge. - It’s unlikely that this cut would have ever made it onto the official recruitment video, but it makes for a great watch now while helping to convince us that perhaps our toughest windward slogs weren't so bad after all.
Plus, two bumper helpings of Docktalk which feature some especially cool kit and new machines.
In this episode:
00:51 Could the Cup go to Britain?
07:50 Docktalk - Part 1
12:00 Setting a new Fastnet course record
15:25 Catching up with Freddie Carr
33:00 Docktalk Part2
36:26 When the going gets really tough

I think that double skin sails and all their respective boomless controls will become more available. The ability to get a near perfect wing shape has to be attractive.

After all the thousands of hours work, human endeavor pressure on family life not to forget money, invested in the AC 75's, It would be quite tragic for the type to be abandoned or restricted to only a couple of competitors for the next AC series. Lets face it without the qudoss of the Americas Cup there would insufficient investment to continue the development of these stunning boats. I would love to see more countries getting involved, this would lead to a faster rate of development and more interesting racing and an increased following, something that the sponsors would really value. However I feel that there need to be changes made to some of the more restrictive rules and course type, as both currently do not allow the boats to be raced at their best. I have been banging on about this since December nice to hear others with more influence than me agree.

Bit naughty having that title and 10 topics within. You've survived this time, but I blacklisted a couple of tech YT channels recently for interesting title, 30 seconds on the topic, 9.5 minutes of OTHER STUFF, grrrrr. At least your other stuff was interesting for the most part. That open ocean racing was brutal at best, but some of them looked unprepared for the waves that hit them, as in, they should have been tucked down and hanging on tight and were just sitting up and washed away like an empty coke can in the wind.

Obviously any competitor can win, if all the stars line up and no hick-ups, the problem is everyone is trying, and only one victor will be crowned, everything lined up in their favor, American Magic and Prada will confirm..

First of all, RYSR is NOT the RYS, not that many of the people signing the COR agreement are aware of that. The RYS is holding their nose as far as the AC is concerned, RNZYS challenged and defends the AC, as does the NYYC, but not the RYS. As far as AC racing in the Solent is concerned, dream on - from a Kiwi point of view, the Solent is cold, tidal and full of sandbanks and Poms. Furthermore, even Poms complain about what poor value for money the local yacht services businesses are. To add insult to injury the Poms try to condescend to their "colonial cousins". it is pure snobbery, on the Poms' part. On to much more interesting things, how are you getting your bike back?

I like your show very informative with a good variety of subject I would hate to see the America,s Cup go to Cowes Unless it was first won in New Zealand first. I will say again, sport is tribal thing, and there are a lot of kiwi,s out there that have put their heart and soul into this Cup defence. I,m not kiwi, but I take my hat off to them . The big boy,s have got to learn that in any sport it is the ground support which keeps that sport happening. You talk.about presenting the Cup to a wider audience Keep kicking people in the teeth and they will ABANDON you. Then all your fancy boats and technology won,t mean a thing. . I point you to a community Welsh team who beat the Mighty All Blacks at a place called STRADDIE PARK .In 1972. They were a working class team who did what the National Welsh side Couldn,t do at the time it was the support of thousands of working people who supported them. I point you to the SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOH,S Who took on the might of the Murdoch media Empire When they tried to run Rugby League in Australia.. And found the majority of league supporters in revolt . Sport is tribal , even sailing. Don,t kick the little bloke in the teeth give them the chance to support you I,'ll give you one last one The day and even the whole 1983 America,s Cup regatta when most Aussie,s were glued to the T,V night after night And on that final race were willing AUSTRALIA II UP THAT FINAL LEG to Victory.. And when thee prime Minister uttered that immortal phrase about the next day,s work paticipation Team N,Z !!! Keep the Cup in Auckland and let em try and win it there. To me it,s a typical Carrot and stick magic trick.

I'm simply astonished that Australia, the country that first showed that the Cup could be wrested from the vice-like grip of the NY Yacht Club, could not come up with a challenge; but you may have something with that "peeved" observation, as the Australian public soon lose interest once NZ start winning; look at rugby!

@@jamesaron1967 probably because there was no one to sail the ship . The best of the Aussie are sailing for other countries. They should bring in a rule requiring helmsman and crew to be born and reside in the country of the challenger .

Ainsly showed his true self in NZ. Complaining and crying about not being involved in the decisions. He is no Sir! So there is no wonder that they wanted to become the challenger of record. This shows his arrogance and complete lack of respect for the cup and its history. The brits have no right to request cup races be raced in the UK. They have the worst record in cup history not once winning it. So, now they change game plans and have trued to buy the cup. Its a joke. Win the cup and win the right to host it. Otherwise sit down and shut up.

Sorry to go against the flow, but as an ordinary cruising sailor (with 80,000 sea miles) and all my sailing friends have very little interest in the AC75 or the A Erica’s Cup as it is so far from every day sailing reality and the boats we use and the money we have to spend on them. .
