We recently did the Blossom and Root and Build Your Library Prehistory combo as suggested by Homeschool Together. It was great. My third grader and I both enjoyed it. Blossom and Root focuses more on dinos than BYL so you may find just using B&R is enough for your family.

My nearly 8 yr old is a full on Jr. Paleontologist and we have been SO unsatisfied with lack of options! We used Blossom and Root pre-history (fully secular) and enjoyed it a lot. It’s a Lit based course so there are a lot of books suggested, but every lesson comes with a buffet of options, including suggested videos/documentaries. We bought the big “spine” books and my kiddo reads them over and over. As far as other resources- the KZfaq channel PBS Eons (made by complexly like Crash Course) is incredible! We also really enjoy the Apple TV show “prehistoric planet” which is literally David Attenborough for Dinos. If your daughter is up for it, the adult Non-Fiction “the rise and fall of the dinosaurs” is another of his favorites.

PBS Eons! I don't count this as part of our school because all of us, Dad included, just enjoy it.

We keep our TV on PBS, I get sucked in every single time I turn the thing on!

Awesome. I believe Eons is one of their exclusively-online content streams, KZfaq and (in 2020) a podcast. We often put it on in the car for those 20 to 30 minute trips. It's short enough that they can watch one then talk about it before we arrive.

As far as our planning stage- I have the “mains” chosen, but not the extras, and I have about $200 left for each kid in the charter curriculum budget, so I’m looking forward to the new kits being released so I can snag some ideas!

It’s probably not your style but blossom and root pre history is an amazing dinosaur curriculum and it’s perfect for your daughters age. BYL also has a pre history that’s great but the Dino part is not as in depth.

Stage? An about to turn 6 yr old starting Grade 2, and two 8 yr olds in a 5th/6th grade blend and we will not be changing anything until January but will CALL it 3rd grade beginning in August.

I didn't realize I didn't clarify. I meant what stage of planning process. Planning, buying, unboxing, mid year still.

@@MakingEverydayMagic Ahh I see. We are mid year-ish? We take off winter so the kids can be outside. It is too hot and humid to be outside in the summer, here. But I will still change their assigned/peer aged grade level in August even if there are no curriculum changes. I buy all year long... LOL It took me an epiphany of sorts to finally see it as I dont need to follow the traditional school things. Not just by day but by year as well.

Brilliant!! I'm always think schooling through summer is a good idea but then my inner public school kids cries. 😅😅 Houston is hot and humid and miserable but this girl loves her summer.

@MakingEverydayMagic This was the first time we took off from the 4th week of Nov to middle Jan. It was GLORIOUS! The kids were outside for hours and hours. Rushing in all red-faced (in the good way) and flush full of life. In the summer, I am lucky if they will stay outside for 10 minutes before they whine about the heat. We're in South Georgia, so same deal, possibly even more humid, here. I am terrified of the military sending us to TX next. Yes, letting go is hard to do. We are so deeply programmed. LOL But a thought: What if you homeschooled through summer and still went out in the summer mornings or dusky evenings? Maybe~! Let the thought stew. :D

We will keep up with fun learning, but I enjoy a break from our normal school life. I like to keep some sort of schedule through summer with at least some bit of learning.

GIRL!! I am secuuuular. There is only ONE "neutral" curriculum I will use...and I use it like crazy. They are Unit studies from Harbor and Sprout. The only 2 units that are neutral are paleontology and astronomy. The thing about this set up is that you can move it to be secular OR religious, at will. Actually, I think there is a ton of content that the religious cannot remove... ANYHOO.. I used the elementary Paleontology (Patchwork studies) alongside the Blossom and Root Pre-History( I think but not sure, you can find it in the 3rd grade level and purchase JUST that part for cheap) . You get evolution, Dinosaurs, and all the fun everything. Harbor and Sprout also has middle school (primary unit), and high school levels(secondary).

I'm still just baffled at the lack of science resources for those of us homeschooling without the Bible.

@@MakingEverydayMagic It is quite hard. I did find the Know Yourself series really great for a year of Anatomy. Kind of like Dr. Bonyfide series but goes through all of the systems. If you find me at BrynjaLives at the gmaily place, I will get you the sample of paleontology.

@@MakingEverydayMagic ooooo AND ..not science but spectacular display of secular. Unstoppable Us, Volume 1: How Humans Took Over the World and Volume 2:Why the World isnt fair. THEY ARE SO GOOD and age/ability appropriate for our..3rd grade gifted kids ;) I got them in the mail, yesterday and read them both. (I read extremely quickly, they are a few hundred pages each). they are so so so good.

What are you going to use for ASL? I want to learn SO badly (and I'd love for my kids to learn too), but I canNOT learn from books. I've tried.

I haven't settled yet. There are several free video based options, so I'll probably start there. I believe that Texas School for the Deaf, Oklahoma School for the Deaf, and Colorado School for the Deaf all have free and available programs. But again, I haven't gone down this rabbit hole yet.
