Sweet corn is the best. Didn't get a garden out this year or last. The year before last raccoons tore down and destroyed ALL of my corn. So frustrating. That planter is awesome. What a back saving attachment.

I really enjoyed the video ! I live in Indiana I'm a month late getting my garden out do to the weather .The farmers by me gave up on planting corn . We planted sweet corn the other day came up in less then 5 days . You not to late plant sweetcorn at all .I have planted on 7-15 and it did really good . It matured faster then the earlier plantings . I think it might have been just as fast to use a Earthway planter in that small of a area .

I love watching your videos Tim I knew you were working with damp soil with the clumps you were still getting some times you can't wait for ideal conditions and you just got to get out there and plant in what ever nature throws at you. Love that planter would love to have one like that about as good as I'm going to get is a walk behind planter with the plates you mentioned. My back is just getting too bad for taking the hoe and making a furrow by hand dropping the seed in and coming back and covering it. Wife helped this year and was grateful for her help.

Great episode. I finally got my Peaches and Cream in the ground this Tuesday in between two storm fronts rolling through Cincinnati. About the uneven ground, I’ve struggled with the same. My Kubota L3300 has about the same wheelbase and the short tractor wheelbase and distance from the rear axle to a 3pt attachment can make it really tuff. I’d cobble together a drag on a chain. I use an old tractor tire with about 8ft of chain and it’s a cheap solution for me. Didn’t have the approval from the finance committee to get a proper attachment.

That soil was perfect for planting, good moisture for the seed to germinate in. Not to mention black land heavier clay based holds the moisture much better then the sand soil.

Hi Tim I just have to say that I love the planter. I bought a 1025r about a month ago mainly because I have been watching your channel for a while. I have been looking for a house with some land and had to do some drainage work st my current house so I thought why not get the tractor now and do the work my self. Was hoping to get a 2025 but they couldn’t get one with a backhoe for a while and knew from watching your channel that the 1025 would be just fine. Keep up the good work!!

For a plot that size, you can level it by dragging an extension ladder across it several times. My garden's the same size and I dragged it by hand with a rope.

I have said before and still think you should pick up a 12' RR iron or I beam to use for a leveling drag. That is several times you have needed one. I am really liking the 2038R. Christy you are the best part! :)

If you have the time, you can dry a field out pretty quick just by working it. This past weekend, we managed to dry up a few acres of fill that got 6 inches of rain finishing not three days prior, in one day, just by dragging a "box blade" (really an ejector pan with the ejector all the way forward) across the top, and then doing it again when it crusts up. That's not a good tactic for farms, but for a garden and if you're mostly relying on fertilizers anyway, that shouldn't hurt too much.

That’s a lot easier than how I used to do it lol. We had to walk with a big stick, poke a hole in the ground, and drop a corn and bean together. For some reason my grandpa always planted corn and bean together and he used to drop a piece of bluegill fish in there for fertilizer. Corn planting was preceded by a fishing trip lol. He said that’s what the Indians did. Whether that’s true or not I do not know. He was born 1899 and just did things different I guess. Never owned a tractor either...all horse drawn

Tim we put 1 rubber closing wheel and 1 spike wheel on our John deere planter. We got them from shoup and they worked beautify in the wet Indiana soil this year. This may be something to think about on your sweet corn planter due to it breaks up sidewall compaction

The 2038R looks like it handles that 6' tiller just fine. I planted the last of my sweet corn last monday. I hilled my potatoes last friday they are growing like crazy this year.

@@TractorTimewithTim I built a combination hiller/cultivator this year so far it's working great! I can run the disc's for hilling or remove them for cultivating, I can turn my S tines upside down individually if not needed for different sized rows. I sometimes wish I had narrower tires than my R4's. Maybe it's time for a tractor just for the garden!😀

Great video. That planter looks like the cats meow for getting the corn in the ground. I didn't plant any sweet corn but got quite a few rows of popcorn planted. I used one of those earthquake manual planters and it worked ok but not great because our soil was also wet. I ended up having to cover my corn with a rake and hoe.

Yea, the Hoss seeder works much better than the earth way. But still not nearly as good as this thing. Of course, for $2500, it SHOULD work good!

I thoroughly enjoy your farming/planting related videos. I had a 3-row 7200 series JD planter a while back, and as I recall, it had “cups” for each seed type. I planted milo, corn, and soybeans with it, and it worked great. I assume that is different than the plateless or plated JD planters you mention.

Yes, these ‘cups’ use the finger pickup mechanism that is common in plateless planters.

Bought a like new Covington 1 row planter with several plates earlier this year. My tractor is the 5075e just like yours, will the size of the tractor matter? Also you had asked me about the regen process. I hadn't experienced until right after that. I was bus hogging when the light came on and per the manual kept on cutting avoiding any excessive loads. Really did not affect power or anything else other than the light being on. Love this tractor.

Hi Tim...... great video love he planter. I have a question When running my tiller it always either leaves a big hump where I set it down and a hole where I pick it up. Have you had these troubles and what can I do to help this? Thanks.

First, I don't see this as much of a worry. Just make sure you till 'back and forth' where possible, and then till across the ends when finished. This leaves one hump/hole at each corner with the rest pretty much smoothed out. A rake can fix those last holes. If the humps/holes really bother you more than a clean edge, gradually lift / lower the tiller while moving. This will minimize / spread the hump/hole such that it won't be as noticeable. Personally, I like a clean edge, so I don't use this approach. I use the first approach mentioned. I have lots of tilling episodes. You can see this approach demonstrated in many of them.

You don't have to make the bed that fine and smooth. Rougher is sometimes better. The planter and rain will smooth the dirt naturally.

What date did you do the seeding? Planted mine Memorial Day. It wasn’t optimal conditions (to wet and clumpy soil) but living in Maine I didn’t have much choice!

I use a jd 7000 4row plate planter it plants just as good as the plateless planter I got mine for 500.00 because it is a plate planter and it has dry fertilizer nice video

The one I am showing is too small. You cannot use it to cultivate growing corn over about 8” tall.

You could look into a unverferth perfecta to level that garden better than a tiller.

Hey Tim, I've now made two plantings with my Harris 2 row planter. The first planting came up ok, but I think I had the seed a bit shallow. I went back and watched the video again when your family was over helping you set yours up and made some slight adjustments and I think it's better, but its not up yet. Either way it's a big step up over the old jd246 plate planter. Also going to check out your supplier for the round up ready corn for next year. The companies I generally order from have a minimum package size of 25k, and that's way more than I need. Thanks again.

Whew! 25k is a bit much! Dad says ‘second knuckle’ for depth. Beat way to test is by loosely removing soil until you hit a kernel. My approach of checking depth of trench is not as reliable.

Yea I used to grow to sell, but now I grow enough to fill the freezer and give away to the neighbors. I couldn't help myself, i just went to 4thegrower and ordered a pack of your blend, it will be September corn, but that's ok - we eat corn until the frost drops.

I have 5-10 acres. what model and attachment do I need to do my work if I want to do these job... 1. plant corn seeds 2. cleaning weeds between space of 2 rows of corns 3. hilling corns each row 4. put fertilizer for the corns 5. tilling weeds with new ground before planting crops If u use that small tractor to plan corns and it will be a large space open between 2 rows of corns which u plant,so what attachment u will use to clean the weeds in the space and hill corns?

@@TractorTimewithTim Since our garden is 1 acre in size, it is considered a food plot. We use a Stanhay 2 row planter. We use it to plant normal things: beans, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, peas, radishes, beets, spinach. We have an old potato planter / hiller we use to do those. Most of our garden is donated to the nearby Christian College & local food bank.

tu fu I’m a big JD fan but for your purposes either a JD or Kubota would be my choice. Probably in the 25-35 HP range. What’s nice about Kubota is they have the universal quick change for the loader so you can use many different brands of attachments for it. The JD requires JD attachments for their loaders. Other than that, they would both serve you well. I’m not a fan of the Branson or Kioti but that’s just my personal opinion from talking to other folks as I haven’t run either brand.

Pull type, yes, 3 pt, probably not. Also, I don’t think the 2038r will straddle two rows. So you’ll be planting in a tire track

What is your role and plant seed spacing Tim for your sweet corn we used to plant back in the 90s and the row spacing was 32 to 36 in and the plant spacing was 8 to 10 inches and I think now is 28 to 30 inch wide rows and six inch plant spacing is that correct if not let me know before I use my old Ford Ford winter

I use 36” rows. Two reasons: 1) easier to walk between for harvest, and 2) my tractor tires are centered to straddle a single 36” row. On the farm, we use 30” rows, but many farmers are moving to 20” or even 15” rows. We plant our sweet corn at 26,000 kernels/acre. There are charts to show you the seed spacing to achieve different populations. Remember, we are not trying to achieve maximum efficiency in our garden. We want large ears, and easy to get between the rows, so we lower the population a bit. Make sense?

@@TractorTimewithTim you need to up product this year we are going to be short of food and I think prices will be high I am trying to get between 10 and 20 acres of sweet corn and 3 to 5 acres of white half runners green beans I need a new corn planter but can't afford it right now with the 2 new small tractors I bought trying to make the crops pay for the equipment

Mabey you could put up a self serve corn stand by the end of your drive 5 ears for a buck or something like that

Can u adjust the seed drop which u want them to drop how far or close each space of seeds like 3",4",5"...how many inches are the best drop? plz....

Yes, fully adjustable. We plant roughly 26,000 kernels per acre.
