We know turkeys need grass openings to supply them with insects. We also know these grass openings need to stay about 12 to 14 inches so turkeys feel safe. Brown Top millet fills these requirements and it’s super easy to establish. Late summer it will put on a seed head that turkeys and other game birds enjoy. Best of all it’s cheap! I have good luck with a cheap bird seed mix from Walmart on a 1/4 acre plot. The deer demolish the sunflowers almost immediately, but the millet and sorghum come in good. I have clover on one side, old pasture on 2 sides, and brush and young woods along the far side. Up north, so no hog problem.

Thanks for the info. Last fall I shredded several areas, plus I had beardless wheat food plots for deer. Rio Grande Turkeys covered me up this spring. Did some millet/sunflowers for birds, and some buckwheat. I’ll shred a maze in the millet late summer & plant some wheat this fall.

Now you have me checking out beardless wheat! The deer destroy my sunflowers and buckwheat before it can produce.

@@whitetailcartel80 the deer mowed down my beardless wheat to the ground 2 or 3 times. I fertilized several times before a rain or snow to get growth back. It actually did head out later, and they are still eating it.

I used to use wheat for dove fields. The last time I did, the deer and turkeys stripped it by August. Nowadays, I would only have to worry about deer…turkeys are way down!

@@whitetailcartel80 sorry to hear about the turkeys being down. I was fortunate to get a good Turkey/quail population with my property. I do as much as I can to help the birds as I do the deer. Very limited hunting, and none on quail. I’m giving them a sanctuary more than anything.

Glad to hear it! I’ve still got a couple of coveys…but haven’t shot at a wild bird in years.
