Hang in there, with any luck we'll get a long Indian summer, even if the light diminishes, we could get seedlings still to have a wee start for the 2023 season.

For the winter, I sometimes put leaves etc on the ground, then add plastic on top of that. It doesn't rot down completely but will be adding some nutrient to the soil and encouraging beneficial microbes.

Yes, I am getting well into chop and drop. It might not look too smart to start with but it doesn't take long for them to shrivel and put some goodness back in the soil. Also keeps the weeds down and the moisture in. I understand your frustration at things not thriving as had a bad year with poor germination and the drought hasn't helped. Still get some more seeds sown and under cover they might surprise us yet.

Hey Geoff. I'm sorry you've had to endure more losses- on top of the produce lost over the summer drought conditions. As my Mum used to say, turkey poults under a month old have a death wish, so please don't beat yourself up re. these. Good to see your fields greening up, hopefully we'll have a long autumn and grazing can continue to be useful but less nutritious. Yes you'll be flushing your ewes, as we shall to a lesser extent as we don't want triplets up here really, twins ok but singles do best in our upland situation. So pleased that you have taken heart from the 'surprise' chicks, yes of little value but sometimes we need a lift and that kind of thing can provide it. Without me sounding patronising- please don't take the setbacks on board. You'll come out the other side, stronger. Take no notice of my ramblings, lol! We wish you the very best. 🤓 Johnny and 🧔🏻‍♀ Jacob, oh and Lily 🐶

@@BrimwoodFarm Haha! Thanks Geoff. Mum would be pleased. Yes the rain has given us some grass re-growth here. It will give us a late bite but thee won't be a great deal of value in it. It's better to have it than nothing.. Thanks Geoff- from both of us. 🤓 🧔‍♀

May I suggest postponing the sows being bred? The heat and overnight temperatures may not show up in their health, but it may show up in the piglets. Hopefully the rains coming this week should help put more healthy conditions for all the animals. They're far more stressed than you can see. Slow and steady will get you through the fear of things going wrong. It's incredibly tough, but it means you also have time to pinpoint your priorities. Maybe fewer animals, maybe limit the garden to mostly what you know people buy, maybe just watching nature for clues about the changes coming.
@ninemoonplanet
@ninemoonplanet Жыл бұрын
You have a limitation on your water available. That could be your key to figuring out what is necessary, what you can forgo for a year, maybe two.
@BrimwoodFarm

We're headed into autumn now so should be okay to breed to sows. Goodness knows they want it - every time they go jnto heat they break out and go on a rampage 🤣🤣

😂 Sows don't do well on leashes either. I was thinking more about cutting back on feed, water and demands on your time. It sounds like you need time to think, to regroup, to adjust. Have you seen videos on woven living willow fencing? I love the look and ease of getting them planted and see them grow.

Ah bless you hun! I seriously feel for you. I did notice that it was starting to look greener there. Our grass is bouncing back but still patchy. I am hoping that the dead grass will act as mulch. We had 8 primary school kids for a birthday party. The grass was still wet. No shoes in the house didn't mean the garden, so we have trails of mud, dirty socks and feet that day! So sad about the turkey chicks. Do they still need a heat mat when it is still warm? Would the hen accept the turkey chick in the brood? I've seen some weird mixed mother/chicks combos on the The Chick Called Albert channel. I didn't know that the sheep couldn't eat the dry plants in situ. Is it because the dry hay that you buy has been fully grown? I think with the pigs, i agree, best of waiting for everything to get a chance to bounce back before getting another hungry mouthed sperm donor. (I write this and still remember that reality program where that lady had to obtain the sperm from a pig! lol) I had no idea that male pigs had corkscrew willy's! Also that puzzled Oh as to why some pigs tails are curly and the Ah when you think about it! lol Do you have an aerator or know someone with a cultivator? Chop and drop it all if it's no good for the animals with those and cover crop the lot. The poo will get mixed in with it all. It might also help with those plants that you said were not good for the animals. All for well having a Charles Downing no dig plot but you need to have ground water in place. This is what gets me as people talk about Zones and altitudes. Being in London, is so different from West to east as it is north and south. I am learning what grows well here. I can apply general rules but a lot of what i have found as sources is mainly US based videos. I guess i could post what is going on here in our garden. I am camera shy as i normally like to be behind the camera. I really think there should be more exposure for UK growers, especially like per region or county. Like using #UKRegionalGrowers #London for example. It will be harder for me to film and edit as, other than disclosing my location to weirdos, i don't want to infringe my neighbours privacy. I may have to voice over as we have interesting new neighbours, renting the place next door. So yeah i can do a voiceover video, sharing what is going on a typical, post war London house.

Thanks for all your lovely comments. The sheep can eat the grass/hay but it's so dried out it doesn't have any nutrional value. Hay is cut before it's lost all its nutrition so it can be preserved within the fodder.
