I’ve put in xmas potatoes, Kallettes and cabbage/kale for winter. When veg like carrots ( or anything for soup) are reduced in Asda I buy and freeze. I’m surprised with all this cold weather that my outside tomatoes or cucumbers are still alive! I’m gonna put in spinach now!

Grow more perennial vegetables then. They're much more tolerant of bouncing temperatures. Perennial celery, claytonia, red-veined sorrel and fat hen don't care what the weather is like, and they're always reliable in an emergency. Fat Hen is supposed to be biennial, but I find it to be more like a short-lived perennial (I've kept one going for 10 years so far, just by nipping the flowers off). You can also eat the leaves of Alchemilla mollis (a bit furry, but you can lose that problem in a mixed salad with a bit of salad dressing. I have some seashore vegetables growing too. Sea radish - so long as you pick the sea pods when young. I had a Sea Kale a couple of years ago, much tougher against slugs than the garden variety. Sea purslane is another good one. But there are others that I've kept for a couple to a few years, growing in pots of gravelly, sandy soil. The salty taste of their leaves makes a change in a salad or, for example: in the case of Samphire, a steamed vegetable. I grow as many perennial vegetables as I can, as this reduces the amount of work I have to do with the more traditional annuals. The tomato plants, for example, have been weird. Some plants are promising. Some are acting downright strangely, and I cannot work out what is wrong with them. All the same variety, in different places but the same conditions in each (thank goodness I took some cuttings - that I do recommend).

Definitely going to grow these - I'm fed up with buying bags of salad from the supermarket to find they are soggy already or go off before they are used up. I don't have a greenhouse but my tomatoes do well in the conservatory, so these should be ok.

Chard is marvelous. It is so easy to grow and has very little pest damage. There are lots of interesting varieties that look stunning in ghe garden. I grew pineapple chard and rainbow this year. It lasts forever as cut and come again. However, it is high in oxolates like spinach so don"t recommend eating big quantities. Have a go with Claytonia though. It won't be lasting through late spring but self seeds amazingly well. It is a great easy salad crop much higher in nutrients than lettuce and especially high in sulforophane like broccoli, but tastier.

I would also recommend a salad mix like Mesculan that produces a mix of baby leaves in under 4 weeks (under cover or indoors to germinate). I sprinkle a little seed mix onto a tray of compost, and i dont bother pricking out or planting on.

Anna, have you looked into cloud seeding? I along with some friends who have allotments have noticed that no matter how much it rains this year, that the soil is unusally dry. The constant rain followed by dry spells and then more rain has resulted in the appearance of an excessive infestation of snail and slugs activity which are destroying our crops. Yes there is time to replant some things like swiss chard and spinach which germinate quite quickly but can you imagine the impact this is having on our farmers, not to mention the way they are being squeezed by the supermarkets. Can you please use your platform to highlight the No Farmers No Food campaign? More people need to get behind our farmers. Finally, have you seen reports that the UK is the first European country despite others banning it, to approve the use of lab grown meat allbeit and for now supposedly, in the production of pet foods.

I grow Swiss Chard in Bulgaria where the temps can drop to - 26 C and it overwinters fine, along with all varieties of Kale, which I only harvest the outer leaves from. Broccolli, Brussels Sprouts, Jerusalem Artichokes and Parsnips also have no problem with these temperatures.

@@AnasFoodLifestyle My Bulgarian neighbours were surprised too when they saw all these green leaves growing through the deep snow, it was my Kale and other Brassicas. All these veg I mentioned also have to cope with long blistering hot summers where it might not rain for three or four months. The last couple of months the temps have been in the high 30's, today it just touched 40 C in the shade. I am very proud of my English style cottage garden with my traditional veg and herbs. Like the song, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme do particularly well here. Well done with your channel educating about growing, even in tiny spaces, because every little helps doesn't it?

Hi Ana, I really enjoy your content and appreciate that you aim some advice at novices who are often too embarrassed to ask for advice. Advice for growing simple crops or perennials which grow in a British climate are most welcome! I really hope that you follow up with videos which show how to store and then recipes as to how best use such simple crops to form meals/meal preps - both raw and when using them dehydrated/frozen/pickled/freeze-dried/canned/etc at a later date. Even if it's just using pot grown potatoes and chard added to cheap supermarket bulk bought (then chopped and frozen) onions and carrots to make a stew or soup or something? No other homestead type account shows things as plainly and honestly as you do - I'd just really like to see it all come together... even adding widely available UK forage items stored from earlier in the year such as frozen blackberries, wild garlic butter/oil, etc
