“There is always in February some one day, at least, when one smells the yet distant, but surely coming, summer.” -Gertrude Jekyll
Welcome! Join me for a beautiful day in the garden while I plant my new bare root rose. Jason surprised me with a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift of the David Austin Gertrude Jekyll rose! Something I have been wanting for my garden for quite awhile now!🌹 Enjoy!

Every year for our anniversary my husband and I buy a rose to plant in our garden. We try to find one that has a name that aligns or relates to the traditional or modern gift for that year. It makes it fun to go shopping and look through all the names and varieties! This year is our 11th rose for our garden. We joke about the year we will have to move to a new house to accommodate our expanding rose garden! It makes the bouquets very special! 💐❤️

This is my favorite David Austin rose (actually it might be my all time favorite rose). You just wait, give it a few years and some love and it will reward you with the most glorious blooms you’ve ever seen. The smell is out of this world too! Also, not sure if you treat your roses with any type of fungicides or organic sprays, but you may want to do that with Gertrude. I live in garden zone 6b and if I don’t start spraying her early spring (even before the leaves come out), she would be covered in black spot. So, just beware of that. Also, don’t forget to feed her with plenty of organic food. I give mine Espoma Rose Tone and I get double the blooms and they are huge! Take care, happy gardening 👩‍🌾😀 As a side note 📝 Be careful, she’s very thorny. Quite deadly with those thorns too 😬

I ordered a Gertrude Jekyll in 2021 from David Austin. I barely missed the cut off shipping date. I finally received it March of 2022. I promptly planted and it took off growing. Finally later in the summer, it bloomed. But it was RED! I sent a photo to customer service. They agreed it was mislabeled. So they said they would sent another in March of 2023. So here I am…waiting AGAIN.

Gertrude Jekyll is a fabulous rose in some places. I have grown it in a zone 9, and oh was it stingy with blooms (likely due to my conditions),but the ones that appeared were gorgeous in appearance, and the fragrance is lovely. I just received a David Austin rose a couple of days ago… it has been soaking in a 5 gallon HD bucket too… I actually forgot it was there and need to pot it up today. Thanks for the reminder!

Zone 9b, here in Fresno, Ca. I bought this from their website three years ago. It was pretty tiny, but healthy. The first year it slept. The second year it crept. This year, the third year, it leapt. Boy, has it taken off, with long shoots and the most beautiful flowers everywhere. It is in the ground. This is the first year that it has flowered for me, but this is also the first year that I applied Rose Tone to my roses, rather than just the alfalfa pellets, chicken manure and mulch. I'm hooked on the product! The blooms on this are the most perfect, bright shade of pink. I have it growing around my former grapevine wires, which has three layers of horizontal wires. You will just love this rose. It is stunning!

This pronunciation of Jekyll really gave me the giggles. I’m from coastal Georgia near Jekyll island, and we pronounce it “jeck-ul”. I’ve never heard this other pronunciation, but it gave me a good laugh to start my day. I planted a Gertrude Jekyll climber last year in a container, and it bloomed but didn’t really climb. I’ve moved it into the ground and am hoping for better results this year. Has anyone seen this rose be slow to get started? Hoping it wasn’t mislabeled!

Thank you for the historical information Janey. I didn't know why it was called that. I bought the same rose last July (winter in Aust.) and didn't get it planted for a couple of weeks. It started flowering in September. and the blooms were gorgeous. It smelled so fresh and sweet. I purchased it as a climbing rose for my archway. Do you think yours and mine are the same variety? The online nursery had it listed as a climber. You will love the beautiful blooms, Janey .Unfortunately, some of my David Austin roses have spider mites. I have sprayed them with homemade pure soap, caster oil, and water solution and all new healthy leaves are growing back. Enjoy your beautiful new rose.

My new Gertrude Jekyll climber is on its way, I am zone 8 but I asked them to delay delivery to March as we are still buried in snow and getting more this next week, up to two feet. 😂. I had a 3 GJ roses years ago but lost them in a freak freeze that killed over 50 of my David Austin roses. That is why, in my area, I aim to get own root roses now as they would've all come back true if they had been, but back then they did not offer own root. The way the weather is going I may still have to pot it up before putting it out into my garden. You won't be disappointed. Even though it is said to do well in part shade, they won't bloom as well.

Sorry Katherine, it really isn’t. As mentioned in this video the rose is named after a very famous garden designer whose name was pronounced Jeekul. A lot of American KZfaqrs pronounce it wrong but I think that’s because they haven’t heard of her. A lot of David Austin rose names are mispronounced by KZfaqrs actually - the ones that are named after English places seem to be quite challenging for people outside the UK! David Austin needs to do a pronunciation guide 😆
