Today we'll be spending a day planting a forest of 300 native trees to bring back some of the wild food sources that would have once grown on this land before it was turned into a grassland. Hopefully overtime as this forest grows, it will support some of the native wildlife that once thrived in this area before it was turned into farmland.
I'll be taking you through the whole process of planting this forest, talking about the trees that I'll be growing, and covering things like succession of forests and how I plan to eventually get rid of the grass underneath and turn it into a more diverse forest overtime.
Each tree represents 1000 of my subscribers, and this New Zealand native forest marks the milestone of this channel reaching 300K subs! Thank you so much for your ongoing support!

Hi, I'm Kalem, and this channel features all sorts of unusual and exotic fruiting plants with tips of how to successfully grow them. I'm interested in all things gardening and love growing my own food and all types of edible plants.
I live on a 2 acre piece of land in New Zealand where we are turning a grass paddock into and abundant, edible paradise and food forest! So come along on this journey with me as I experiment with growing, and try to push the limits of what I can grow. I'll share with you my successes and failures so hopefully you'll learn from them and have a go yourself! Come learn with me and Subscribe to join this awesome community :)

I'd love to see a time lapse of the 300 trees, within the next year, you could take a picture every like 2 weeks so we can watch them grow for a year or two and that could be a video on its own but I love the fact that you guys are becoming self sustainable for the most part. I wish I had some land to do that with as well even if I'm not in New Zealand I would love to be able to do what you're doing much love from Colorado

Congratulations! 300K is amazing! Probably my favorite tree (I'm up in Northland) is Kauri, I'm blessed to have one on my property. She's quite a big tree, planted around the time my house was built, around 1885. She has a lot of natives living around her, but she's the biggest tree on my property by far. I have a lot of re-emerging natives here, on what was very poor farmland for many years. Love what you're doing, and feel very privileged to be one of the 300K club!

That said I found it funny you were glad you weren't walking through the forest or bushland of aus because of snakes. Just be more careful when walking and stomp a bit more they will make way. Fan-freakin-tastic. I love that you've created your own forest, even better that it's mostly native. Great to see you talk positively about the Karamu - most people seem to treat them like weeds but I love them. Beautiful looking and fast growers. While the birds get a feed of the berries, sheep, goats and horses love to eat the leaves (and the tree doesn't care, it'll just grow more). I'm growing a bunch of Karamu, Karo, cabbage trees and a few others in my mini forest (actually a stupidly large berm area) mostly to feed my goat but also for shade and privacy. So far the cost is zero because I've been planting up the seedlings from my own trees, so I feel I'm one step ahead of you... except that you have Manuka which I adore but don't have because I'm determined to do it all for free! The cat in the mulch is gorgeous

New Zealand is such an amazing country. Was there last year and was so impressed. I live in North Central California up in the mountains of the redwood forests and about 25 minutes from the ocean. We live in a strange micro climate that’s really being challenged by climate change. my big experiment because we’ve only been on this property of 3 acres for about three years. Was to bring the orchard back to health and start planting fruits that were possibly a zone or two higher than our designated grow zone. Tropical fruits from Australia and South America.I just know that the warming is happening faster than they understand. And I want to be prepared for that inevitability. It’s a really interesting experiment that takes some manual labor when we have frost to the young trees. But I can’t wait to see what happens in five or six years.

@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower Жыл бұрын
Nice, sounds like a good plan! In the long term there will likely be some that either get blown over or don’t make it, however the support that they provide each other as they grow is where a lot of the benefit is. Even for a natural forest, eventually the early succession trees get taken over by larger emergent trees and the succession of the forest continues. I’ll plant some of those types of trees at a later stage. We get very dry Summers here, so getting that quick shade is essential for the trees to thrive :). Trees can also share and gain nutrients and water through fungal networks, so hopefully that will develop with the trees to further strengthen them :)

I love this. I was thinking it would cost loads to plant that many native trees so havent looked into it. This inspires me to start one tree at a time. We have loads of akeake sprouting here so will start to plant them closer together to create a windbreak. I didnt know kowhai were nitrogen fixing so thanks for all the info

Don't forget the spiders that we have here in Australia. Much in all as I love the bush, snakes and spiders can be annoying to navigate. Manuka plants are lovely. We have quite a few all the way along the Queensland coast.

Greetings from the other side of the globe! Here I walk among spruces, pines, junipers and now leafless birches, mountain ash, alders, aspens and willows. I planted some acorns and maple seeds to see if they would do well on my plot. Now I just have to wait for few decades.... 🙂

Kia ora from the Waikato. 12:21: My father was a shearer and he would have said at this point: "I should have done this one first!" To which I would always point out how ecofriendly he was that he even recycled his jokes over and over. Congratulations on your milestone and what a way to celebrate.
