I guess the proximity to the wall helps the palm as it will provide shelter and the brick will act like a storage heater in the summer.

I dont plant windmill palms that low below the soil line. I make sure that the top of the root ball is just above the soil line so that in winter it will drain water properly and wont freeze the root system.

About planting depth for palms. Planting a water loving palm in a depression is "fine", but it is much better to plant it a little high then make a mound around it. That way you can control how much water pools up around it. The roots will be exposed to more air as well planting high and thats good for the palm. If someone has done the "mistake" of planting their palms in a depression I recommend you widen the depression. If nescerry create a small trench that will make the water run away it it collects too much water. 😊

They look healthy in more shaded area. They fade if left in strong sun light. I’m going to have them planted along a shaded wall.

I have had two palms in 15 litre pots for 10 years or so. In my experience they do not like full sun. They turn yellowish. They keep a nice dark green colour in a shaded area on a stand along a wall leaving room for the leaves to spread and not much water. I’m about to transfer them to the ground. Tropical rain forests are shady.

@palmcentre8 жыл бұрын
Hi fe ga, SMS CUSTOM is asking for an indoor palm, so if a plant has been indoors for a while and not in direct sunlight then taking it outdoors into full sun can shock and scorch the leaves.

@@cj7girl280 It will most likely start to grow away from the wall to make room for the fronds or the fronds on the backside will be compressed into the wall until the palm is taller than the wall. Either scenerio is not a problem. Trachies do not get huge crowns or trunks.

I would add that windmills must be planted in well drained soil. I've lost many that grew robustly for up to 12 yrs, and then succumbed to root rot. I have several with 6' of trunk that need to be dug up and transplanted in a well drained area of my yard. Since I don't have 5 strapping men to help me, I'll have to watch them slowly die over the next year or two. I'm growing seedling palmettos to replace them. They love wet feet and are bullet proof down on the flood plain.
@Lutoslava4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps there are some volunteer gardeners in your area who would lend a hand? It's a pity to let the trees die.
@jeannienelson10354 жыл бұрын
@@Lutoslava Thanks for your concern.. Actually, I no longer think poor drainage is what's killing some of my windmill palms. I recently remembered about 12 yrs ago, I planted one in a swampy, muddy area located near the entrance to a stream.. It's still growing and appears very healthy. It gets only a little dappled sun, so it's not growing very fast, but it's healthy as can be! Other palms, growing on well drained soil have just 'up and died' for no apparent reason. I'm baffled! It's kind of you to take interest in my palm mystery.. I have 7 Windmill palms that seem very happy and are rapidly growing. Go figure! Thanks again for your input!! You seem like a nice person!!
@davidr45233 жыл бұрын
This guy was lazy. Why not 1. Free up the Palm roots 2. Add fertilizer and root stimulator 3. Extensively soak the tree before you add dirt. 4. Add some top soil. Also since these Palms like direct sunlight the back of the palm facing the wall will always have brown/dead leaves since it will not get sun.

It's not a problem neither the wall or foundation of it will be damaged. One or two things will happen it either starts to bend slightly outwards to get away from the wall or it will just grow straight up with some fronds compressed on one side untill it clears the wall. Neither is a problem.
