Tap o’ Noth Permaculture - a Food Forest Farm

2 жыл бұрын

In this week's FARMVLOG we take a look at our large pile of bokashi that we made last year. With the help of Jame's daughter we haul the bokashi over to the market garden where we are making new no dig veg beds in the polytunnel. We have a look at a new area of fruit tree silvopasture made up of apple and cherry trees plus a new mixed forest garden area near our big pond. This multistrata agroforestry mimics the natural design and function of a forest ecosystem. We look at the tomatoes and peppers that Rosa sowed in the last vlog as they are ready to transplant to bigger pots. Then, we finish the day by planting a 15m row of aronia berry/choke berry in between our forest garden tree rows/hedgerows that are in the market garden. We also see why our farm dog, Oran, hates our BCS two wheel tractor so much!
About Tap o' Noth Farm:
Hi, we're James and Rosa! Welcome to Tap o' Noth Farm, a quarter acre Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) market garden and 8 acre permaculture designed forest garden farm/homestead in Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland. We practice home scale to small farm scale agroforestry and regenerative agriculture methods to produce organic fruit and vegetables, raise dairy goats for all our raw milk needs, Shetland sheep and geese to graze our silvopasture and coppice systems and laying hens, moved around in a Chickshaw, for an abundance of eggs.
Our videos aren't 'how to's' - more videos to give a glimpse into our lifestyle and hopefully inspire you to bring aspects of what you see into your own life.

We will list your name at the end of each vlog episode so everyone knows how brilliant you are! We will also keep you updated on our farm work/life by posting exclusive video content that is not available on KZfaq such as FARMVLOG outtakes, behind the scenes footage, hints & tips and more in depth videos discussing the many permaculture systems to be found on the farm PLUS the odd photo from Rosa and James.

My dog Flo hates anything mechanical too. She's a nightmare to have around when I'm using the chainsaw, strimmer, lawnmower, how she hasn't done herself serious injury I really don't know? Nice to see you all doing so well. 😊

The new orchard area almost looks like those old market gardens they used to grow strawberries on in Cornwall. :)

Hey y'all, I was so happy to see you today. What a blessing to have your daughter there!! I see there are so many trees and berry trees for the agroforestry program. I do not see many others promoting this as much as y'all do do I hope your efforts will create an expansive inclusion of new folks to bring the practices to the future generations. Stay safe take care bye for now

In regard to your dog barking when the powered trailer is on. You could consider using an anti-bark collar. They are very effective and he would learn very quickly not to bark and requiring no training from yourself. I used with my own dog and within 1-2 say he learned not to bark at machinery. Each time i put the collar on he gets a treat as to make putting on the collar a positive experience. Now he does not bark and does not activate the collar, so in the long run its not as cruel as it seems.

The Bokashi looks great! It's fascinating how quickly it breaks down. Really enjoying seeing all the tree and fruit plantings, that's a (long way in the) future goal of mine to grow large amounts of fruit for brewing so it'll be really interesting to see how it all works for you :)

Awesome job guys! You got us inspired! Our dog goes crazy around our equipment too!! Great info on the mint you have saved us on the possible trouble it could cause with the spread! Maybe we will come up with a container idea for it. Really looking forward to seeing your berry crop!

Love your channel! I'm a fellow farmer/homesteader wanting to get more into various compost methods. Did you by chance test the pH of your finished bokashi? I've read it creates an acidic product. But since yours sat for a time i wonder if its less acidic? Just curious! Never made my own but am doing some research on it. Thanks, and Rosa you look fabulous!!!

I love how you call it "editing". 😄👍 Interesting too that I have just planted an Aronia hedge! I've been growing them for about 10 years and spent a lot of time figuring out how to propagate them from cuttings. Very hit & miss for me but, finally late summer cuttings worked but, did not root for about 9 months! They work great at me as they love boggy ground which I have plenty of! Love the vibrant red autumn colour on them as well nevermind the bountiful harvests!

I'll have to do some research and add Aronia berry to my forest garden, just because. 😁 That camcorder your daughter has can do time-lapse recording if my memory serves me correctly. A less expensive camera if you want an extra camera to set up and leave it.

Hearing you talk this vlog I didn't realize you'd been farming as long as you have. I'd love to hear about more of your mistakes and what you'd do differently. I think you could do a couple videos on this something like a QandA but also maybe a farm tour of things you would do differently if you knew what you do now. You guys do a lot more tree and shrub planting compared to a lot of permaculture homesteader types and with that, there's the fear of planting the wrong thing in the wrong place.

Do you have any recommended resources on pollarding for tree hay? I'd also love to hear what that protection on the trunks of the fruit trees is. We lost a couple dozen fruit trees to rodent girdling this winter.
