PLANTING GARLIC ON THE WINTER SOLSTICE

Planting garlic in Australia is usually done on the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice! It`s easy to remember when to plant garlic. Good compost soil, a bit of coffee grounds from the local cafe and a few handfulls of ash is all garlic needs to be healthy, strong and organic, just like you`ll be when you eat it!
love and peace to everyone

Just a comment for people in colder climates, me planting on my shortest day of the year would involve a pickaxe to punch through the ice. The real timing will vary from place to place, and if you are in a colder climate, you want to plant 1-2 months before your ground freezes solid. For me, that's around Halloween.

I planted some in my garden in northern Thailand just the other day. I'd read that keeping garlic in the fridge for a month or more before planting it helps it to do better in warm climates. I'll have to wait and see :)

Interesting... I manage an organic farm in the Northern Rivers, NSW. We plant from mid-March to get lower temperatures during bulbing, also we can cure our bulbs before the heat and rain kick in. I'll have to try a later planting and see if it cooperates here :) Beautiful work, have fun.

We have squirrel problems here in Northern California. I use tulle around my beds and containers and use clothes pins to fasten it to stakes (fiberglass tent poles without the bungee cord in them for different height requirements.). I saw this in another video from a lady in Southern California and gave it a try. It worked! They don’t like getting their little claws in the mesh of the fabric. You can buy a whole bolt cheaply and pick any color you like. Pale green was my choice for blending in with the vegetation. Good luck!

Yes, I enjoyed the video as always. This is the first time I heard about planting garlic on the shortest day and harvesting on the longest. That is so cool. It is the longest day here in my corner of the world, but my garlic is not ready to harvest, I dug one last week because I needed to use it in a recipe and the bulbs are still not fully formed. But then, my garden was covered in a few feet of snow on the shortest day here. I think I planted in October and usually harvest in July or August, I'm still learning. You have such a gorgeous, long, growing season. 💚

Good fun. I live in the same region as you but closer to the coast. I favour Elephant garlic (also known as Russian garlic) which is a cross between onion & garlic. With our sub tropical rainfall it performs better than a true garlic....give it a try. That pesky bandicoot (and his extended family) will be feasting tonight me thinks 😉 ....have you considered a ruthless guard dog like a Jack Russell? Thanks for the video ☀

I found out after making this video that in my region (Northern NSW) it is best to plant garlic in March. I grew up in Tamworth, maybe that made a difference as it was mum’s advice from when I was a kid.
@billy4147
@billy4147 Жыл бұрын
We also live in the Northern Rivers region. For us, planting garlic on the traditional northern hemisphere calendar, winter solstice, has not allowed for good bulb development (those very warm early spring temps). You can plant garlic from early Feb in the subtropics. We've trialled 5 different types in our home garden and settled on two subtropical varieties. We can plant from late Feb to mid March. Hope you're successful.
@TheWeedyGarden
@TheWeedyGarden Жыл бұрын
Yes, Mums method seemed to work for her, but I grew up in Tamworth! Actually I think you can plant garlic any time. I planted a crop four months ago too and they are doing fine!
@sc0tt500

I Agree with @billy4147. Here in the Clarence Valley (northern NSW) big garlic bulbs need that early warmth to get off to a good start so the bulbs have finished developing before the heat arrives.

I previously planted garlic around end of October early November in my Northern Midwest state. The past 2 years our winters have received less and less hard frost. This year we only had about 20-30 inches of snow in total which isn’t normal for a northern climate. If the winters continue to be warmer than normal I was thinking of the refrigerator method for garlic. What do you think?

Actually it can be all over the place. Read some comments. Mum’s method was for a village in the middle of nsw, but as I’m seeing by the comments it’s very different depending on where u r. I planted some late summer and they are up and growing. I reckon you would know best if you planted every two weeks for ten years to find out the best time, and even then you could not be perfectly right as seasons change all the time. but if you use it as a guide you’ll be fine.
