The weather here in Brisbane has been so weird. My Cucumbers 🥒 and zuchinni are going great. My beans have struggled a bit but are now off and racing up the trellis. Spinach is going to seed now. Happy gardening 🥰

Lovely to see how things in your garden are faring after all the rain that Tassie has had. We return in a few weeks so hopefully ill have time to get some seeds in and growing. All the best to you and the family. The flowers look beautiful

My tomatoes and other plants doing well I'm Launceston except for the corn which is really struggling. I am experiencing a plague of slugs and snails 🐌 though. I reckon I've lost 30 or so assorted plants to the blighters. Should be a bumper beam year though. Good seeing so many Aussies commenting here.

Yes, this wet weather has been good for slugs and snails! Not so good for the gardener!

John the insane rain & weather we are having here in Brisbane is playing havoc with my garden & planting. Seedlings don't know whether to grow or sit dormant- very disheartening up here. Cheers Denise- Geebung Brisbane

Thanks for the update, this season has been a weird one. Many plants have really struggled to take off this year, but certain things struggled and then went crazy. Potatoes got off to a really slow start (planted around the same time as yours but took another 2 weeks to get out of the ground) are currently going nuts despite going in at the very last minute for Vic, tomatoes have been slow going, but are super sturdy so a few more warmish days and they’ll shoot up, perpetual spinach has sprinted to seed, but the English Spinach is fine. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Downside of all the rain and then a few warm days are the pests, earwigs in particular have just exploded in population. Everything is just a bit odd.

I am south-east Melbourne. Have also had trouble with lettuce not doing well and carrots coming up and then withering. I planted out some seed grown tomato plants yesterday, in pots, but with the strong northerly winds today have just moved them under cover! Yes a strange season.

Hi John, We've been having some wintery weather in recent days here in Melbourne. How's the weather like down your neck of the woods? How are your tomatoes going?

Toms dont grow so well over summer here. It's too humid for them. I thought I might have gotten my zucchini in early enough but a recent rain event has seen the plants getting sooty mould all over them. I think I will just cut my losses on them. I have New Guinea Bean planted, which needs the heat to grow well. I use it as a zucchini substitute. I hope your garden grows well even with all the rain.

We rarely get a frost after the middle of October. Yes, you would have to wait.

I'm just 20 kms from Deloraine, and I usually keep getting frosts till the end of December, and sometimes they start again in January. ALWAYS by April at the latest.

Do you grow from seed? I’ve had terrible luck with poor potting mix again this yeah, but better results with mini green houses to start them off.

@@davidlillecrapp2960 Thanks for the reply and the information. I'm trying Osmocote potting mix sifted to a fine mix for my next trial of Tomato seeds in mini green houses. Hopefully I'll find the right system to get some kind of harvest this year.

@@YoureNowOnTV it's getting a bit late to grow from seeds. Maybe you should buy advanced seedlings from the nursery. Tomatoes need calcium to produce fruit. This is a fertilizer recipe I'm using this year: 1 cup of crushed dried eggshells (dry fried in a saucepan for 5-10 minutes) add to 10 cups of vinegar, cover with a tea towel and rubber band (not a tight lid) after 7-10 days the mix will have stopped bubbling and it will no longer smell like vinegar, this is diluted 1 teaspoon of fertilizer to 4 litres of water. Spray on leaves and water in. Another thing I do is to soak a couple of banana skins in water overnight and water it on my vegies. Better and cheaper than commercial fertilizers. Good luck 🍅

How far a part do you space your tomatoes?
@homesteading
@homesteading Жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of tomatoes and how you are growing them. But generally I space them about 40-50cm. This year they are on the lesser end of that as I had lots of plants!

Hi John, when did you sow your tomato seeds? We"re in the North-West and started ours at the beginning of August but they are a fraction of the size of yours. I think we may have to start even earlier next year.
@Joseph-yc6qb
@Joseph-yc6qb Жыл бұрын
Hi Brad, I'm in the north and started mine 1st September. Mine are probably half his size but I've kept mine in a cold frame the whole time, which wouldn't hold as much heat as a green house hence why they are smaller. Where have you kept your tomatoes? They probably haven't been kept warm enough if they're that small.
@brad_lucas
@brad_lucas Жыл бұрын
@@Joseph-yc6qb Mine were in a greenhouse, which is why I'm so perplexed. i have three varieties and while the Grosse Lisse are the biggest, they're still less than half the size of what John's seemed. The others are smaller yet. This is our first year with a greenhouse and starting from seeds saved from last year, so there could be a number of factors involved :)
@Joseph-yc6qb
@Joseph-yc6qb Жыл бұрын
@@brad_lucas Oh okay, that's odd. Could be the potting mix perhaps? I've used homemade compost mixed with some Coco coir and it's made a great potting mix. I've heard people having mixed success with bought stuff. All the fertilizer shortages etc might be a contributing factor. I wouldn't be surprised if yours take off when you put them in the soil and things warm up some more :)
