I have bananas planted in different conditions, but the ones that are planted in a hole that fills with water, are twice as big. In my experience, bananas want a lot of water and are heavy feeders.

I love that you are growing bananas in SoCal. I have Ice Cream bananas and Puerto Rican plantains growing in a bed behind my pool. They grew babies and doing great. Hope to get fruit next year. Get ready for the heavy harvests from the Haas avocados. Ours is now 20 years old and have an every-other-year heavy and light cycle. This year was light, but we still harvested 190 avocados. The tree is loaded for next year's crop which will be a heavy harvest. Our neighbors get at least half of what we grow. It is fun giving stuff away. Have fun with your tropical plantings.

I’m loving your thought process during the making of this video. I literally just pulled out a 20 year old avocado tree rootball - it never fruited for me as I didn’t know I needed multiple trees to pollinate it. I guess I just made room for several new raised beds.

The papaya is botanically a berry. It may look like it grows from a tree, but the papaya is actually the fruit of an herb. And a tall one at that - the papaya tree can grow over 10 feet tall.

I have had the first great year of gardening at my current house, and a major part of it is because of your videos. Mainly to just try stuff, adapt, and play around with different varieties. I live in a zone 3a climate, and things can get frustrating with overwintering, but it has been really rewarding to start to see things working out as planned! Congrats on nearly a year at your home! It is very impressive the amount you have accomplished!

So smart to get the banana with afternoon shade, and way to level-up with your neighbor's avo for pollination! Also, your avos are gonna shade your cistern, so "stuff" in the water will grow less quickly. Nice job, guys! Mounding, spacing, amending, all of it solid.

The Business channel idea is great when thinking about starting a homestead I always see the great things KZfaq homesteaders do but always question how much it really cost or wonder how much it would cost and things to do to help grow your homestead but also cut the cost at the same time and how to slowly do that.

Hey Kevin, got an epic idea for you that I learned from Pete Kanaris over at Green Dreams. If you have a big enough tree you could plant the passion fruit next to it and it will vine up the tree. The fruits fall when they are ripe and can fall from 50 ft or so and take no damage. I did it and do not regret it, it saved me space in the garden and money. Also a tip on the papaya, if you cut it down to the height you want it, it will come back and fruit and it will keep it from growing so tall and top heavy that it blows over when it has heavy fruits on it. Love that you got a banana plant, looks like a dwarf cavendish? Love the epic homestead, keep on growing on!

I would love to see a video of each of the major groups of food and their general requirements all in one place. Like a section for a general rule of all cucurbit, a general rule of all tomatoes, of all peppers, all citrus, and even flowers and pollinating landscape, etc that includes soil composition, root depth, watering, fertilizing routine, how to grow both in season and over wintering potentials such as petunias that are perennial but because of the small range of places they can thrive, they typically die in a lot of zones but they can be saved if you're careful. Also on how to collect and prepare both flower and veggie seeds for yourself to use next season and how long they can be stored for. I know cucurbits can cross pollinate very easily and it seems that a lot of those crosses are inedible so a little more about the seed process for those. In the yearly update video coming, I'd like to see you touch on the selling and business aspect of your homestead as well, how you choose what to sell, where, and when, and if you plan to go into selling small container trees with some of your own fruit seeds.

Hi Kevin, i always watch your videos, i love them and i learn from them every week for my small garden in Québec. Small tips for you: the banana tree is not a tree; it's a plant! Therefore it will die once it produced the bananas and you will have to plant a new one every seasons. (It kinda makes a mess when all the leaves dry and fall off)

I’d really like to see the types of seeds you are starting like your older videos. Like a, “these are the three types of pumpkins I bought from this seed company. These are two new chili seeds from this other seed company. I’ve never heard of this plant so I bought it and we’ll see”-type of video. You tell us what you plant, like the avocado trees, but you used to post pictures and talk about the differences. So I need options and pros, cons, tips, heads up, info about planting seed, store bought or organic potatoes and such. Think you need to get that planter out from around the banana while you still can, it will end badly. My little banana clump is 10 years old, you always have 3 generations of banana plants, the oldest will be fruiting, then you have 2 younger ones. When the oldest fruits, you cut it down, the next oldest then fruits. The rough diameter is way, way, bigger than that little planter. And I know how expensive they are. Awesome job on the water harvesting.

Looks great Kevin! What type of banana did you choose? We have basjoo's (ornamental) and dwarf namwah (edible) here that do well. They love tons of water, and regular heavy feedings. I take all the clipping from pruning around the yard and throw them at the base of the bananas, as well as used coffee grounds, along with monthly feedings of liquid seaweed, molasses, and an all purpose 8-8-8 liquid organic fertilizer. I like the idea of planting trees close to each other, as long as theyre the same variety, because im running out of space and thats just the orchard, but im still worried. What about the root system? Won´t they compete too much? I want to plant so much stuff but im realizing its not possible with the space i have left. I have mostly young citrus trees so they are still growing & probably would overlap at some point. -_-

What is the blue flower next to the queen lime red zinnia at 12:32? Bachelor’s button? P.S. it’s a good idea to plant multiple papayas in the same area for cross pollination and back-up if a tree randomly sets weird fruit one season or the squirrels/birds stake their claim on one. Also, they fruit more heavily when you keep them short and the trunks get thicker and are more wind resistant. I live in S FL and the shorter ones have a better chance at withstanding hurricane winds.

10:43 One thing that I always hate over here is that the Netherlands has the opposite of a nitrogen defiency, even the EU has told our government to cut down nitrogen pollution asap, its threatening the grasslands and stuff over here. But it also has an effect in the garden, you can clearly see that nitrogen is extremely abundant in the soils thanks to crazy leaf production and contant weed invasions. I wished there was an anti fertilizer for nitrogen commercially available 😂 (Sorry, rant not intended😅)

When you plant a new tree in the summer in your climate, how often do you water them? I’m planting a grape tomorrow in Connecticut (zone 6) and I’m kind of nervous.

Did you have the irrigation setup for the corn and taters? I don't remember noticing it before... I also had an idea for a video series for you: Epic Gardening Grows Beer and Epic Homesteading Brews Beer. I'd watch the shit outta that series. PS. Happy Bday bro.

I'm curious why you still planted both an A and B type avocado if your neighbor has avocado trees hanging over your fence? How close do they need to be for cross pollination?

It's queenY lime zinnia. You keep leaving off the Y! I'm not sure why it bothers me so much that you leave off that Y, but it does 😆

@@epichomesteading all-americaselections.org/product/zinnia-queeny-lime-orange/ Either your packet is wrong, or they are selling something very similar because, well, plant patents. Those are a whole 'nother point of contention!
