I used to grow watermelons the same way then I switched to growing up .It saves more space for me and i have not lost a single Mellon since . I dont have a trellis or cattle fencing or anything either .I just ponded a few metal fence post in the ground and ran twine back and forth then weave the vines up as the grow .I use some old hammock netting I had for the melon's . I live in western PA

We planted watermelon last year by our downspout in backyard. The soil is rich with compost there. We started them in July and in Oct we had tiny melons that were not quite ripe. Starting them earlier this time. We only planted about 10 seeds from a melon we had. It was fun to watch them grow. Like the tomato cage idea. Cantalopes also will grow up latticework. Melons might do that.

You could always start some more seeds. One of my cats decided that the pot with the Kaho watermelon looked like a good place to nap because of the straw mulch. She loves lounging around on the straw in my garden. The plant was flat as a pancake but besides having a torn leaf, it has bounced back.

Hi . I found professional land scape fabric at sams this year . It’s 4 ft by 225 ft . It was like 27. And some change the first one I bought then I went back and went back to reg price it was like 32.00 I think so I got 2 of them . It also comes with very strong and nice hooks to poke in the ground. I used two rolls to do my cantaloupe and watermelon. Yelp my rows are kinda long . Lol

I have been using the same soil for 7 years now organic that I made myself and it has gotten better with age I amend it every year according to its needs and during the winter I compost in it I rent my home and my landlord won't allow a compost pile so I place a large bucket with a lid and no bottom in the center of a very large container and every time I dump my scraps in it I cover it with mushroom compost boy are my plants loving it and I do change which amendments I use each year this year it was cow manure next year chicken as I do fear using the same manures every year would make it heavy but then again most manures have peat moss in them already I thank GOD every day for the garden he has given me and I think that S the most important thing I can do for MY GARDENt give GOD ALL THE GLORY

Gypsum and peat has helped to make my compacted clay soil fluffy and beautiful. I've been using this combo along with lots of rabbit manure mixed with composted leaves and food scraps for several years and the transformation of my soil has been truly amazing. I mulch with wood chips because that's what we have on hand and it helps to conserve water so well that even in the hottest weather I'm still able to find that the soil is moist under the chips. I don't need to water as often as when I only used leaf mold mulch.

Please your immediate response will be highly appreciated as I am ready to farm right away. Thanks a lot.

thank you very instructive. you really work hard for your soil. to make it easier without buying so much stuff you can make a trench and bury a fallen tree, cover it with big branches and smaller ones at the top. then you add your enriched soil on top. and the worms will do the work. also you can cut the vine if you see that you already have max 2 melons growing. there is no need to let it grow long. the shortest the vine bearing a fruit the biggest and better the fruit... nice work though.

@ChristasGarden
@ChristasGarden 5 жыл бұрын
Initially, when I first made this bed I dug down 1.5 feet or so, mixed in my soil amendments and removed big rocks with my garden fork. Now sometimes I just use a tiller on it, other times I dig with my fork. I spread the amendments over my entire watermelon planting area, sometimes I mix them in and other times I just leave them on top of the soil (I am not a super precise person). Leaves are spread over my entire garden in the fall.
