Hi Claire! I use diatomaceous earth by mixing one tablespoon with one quart of water and putting it in a spray bottle. Then i thoroughly spray the plant with the mixture. This spreads the diatomaceous earth very effectively and EVENLY! This works wonders for me. Hope this helps! It keeps it from "dusting" everywhere.

How true! I sprayed this under my house where ants were getting in, and a large rhapsallis with mealy bugs. When it dries it's a complete fine covering and very effective. Need to reapply outside after rain as it washes off. But would work on indoor plants too.

I'm the exact same way with my obsessions! I fixate on things until I find a new fixation. My friends will say things like: "Wow, you really love plants now!" (Six months ago I was obsessed with crafting and Cricuit projects). At least with plants, there's SO much to learn.... I recently switched all 30 of my plants to semi-hydro and I'm completely obsessed!

Hi Clair! With Pon, I typically use a fine sieve first and tap the sides over a garbage can to get rid of the powder. Then I use a little bit bigger sieve over a storage container and tap that until no more falls out. These tiny grains are great to use instead of sand for making DIY succulent style mixes, or even in your regular potting mixes for extra drainage. Those tinier bits are quite useful! 🪴😘
@Bat_Fiend.
@Bat_Fiend. 21 күн бұрын
That semi hydro soil mish mash you were doing is something called "no drainage". It's basically what you did, a layer of some semi hydro substrate at the bottom and soil for the rest. I first saw Charmaine do this (unplantparenthood) on her channel and she does this for most of her plants. It's a great low maintenance method. I've only tried it for my adiantum so far but it has worked great for that one. So I recommend it at least.❤

These are my favorite videos ! I work from home and its so hot ): here (no air conditioning) but watching you/working my job,taking brakes and talking care of my plants (about 200) really helps me get through the day! So not boring at all but actually very helpful I have a stainless steel trash cans/bins (new and clean) that I put all my soil,gardening things and plant stuff in I do have it outside but I have the space (20 acres) It does help me stay organized but I have so many pots and I am not sure how I will be getting those organized ): and your Spanish was excellent ! I had two begonias and they both died I think it was just too hot for them

Love what you did with those soil bins. Putting them on wheels would be so handy! I have a similar system with smaller bins on a small shelf, I have to refill them “more often” but they are also easy to carry around Yes, cane Begonia root so easily in soil for me! The leaves go limp (and shiny) for a bit at first, maybe one or 2 drop and then they perk up again and continue growing. Id suggest trying it with a plant that grows easily for you so that it wont be stressful (and also not a problem if it doesn’t work in your conditions for some reason). 🌱 Cane Begonia: Pink Minx, Tamaya (bonsai style), Brevirimosa Begonia Jiewhoei is also cute and quite easy if the humidity stays above 60%

Claire, I’m laughing and feeling for you as i am exactly like you as an adhd person 😇😅 I obsess and/or get anxious (what if the plant is sold out) to the point where I can’t sleep at night when I hyperfocus on something - very often a plant these days 😂 I have an garden begonia and I LOVE IT so much, I want to grow it inside for the Winther. It is called Begonia boliviensis aka “Sparks will fly”. It has the most beautifull Dark velvety leaves, and amazing powerful orange flowers 😍 Every morning when I open the Doors to let the dogs run out in the garden, I smile from looking at this beautiful begonia. Thank you for your content 🫶🏻

About the cubboard of chaos. It is an ADHD thing to have “object permanens”. That you need to be able see your things all the time. I havent figured it out either, but what if you had a basement storage and you only had like 10 extra pots in your cubboard, and then took a picture of the rest, and put it away in another storage place? 🤞🏻❤️

Impressive! Love the crickets when y’all pan over to Joli! 😂😂 Me da mucho gusto que están aprendiendo español. Mi hija habla español y portugués. El año pasado, ella fue a Brasil por una semana y le encantó… honestamente, yo quisiera aprender francés. Loved the video! You threw me for a loop! I have different soil mixes in storage boxes, it really comes in handy to have everything mixed and at hand. I mix my own using a base soil and add stuff to it. I have storage boxes for trellises, empty cleaned nursery pots etc. For your Anthurium, put lecca at the bottom of your vessel and mixup tree fern, a little bit of soil and pon…or leave out the soil and just do a tree fern and pon mix.

I’ve been recently experimenting with substrate layers as well - I’ve transferred an alocasia dragon scale and anthurium crystallinium into something like that: layer of pon, layer of moss, main layer - chunky soil + another layer of moss on top. I leave 1cm of water in the bottom after watering. They both absolutely love it!

Re maryelizabeth's comment; mixed with water works for months! Just have to redo if you wadh it off. When dry is finer, and none wafted through the air. Same as the dry puffer though, you have to keep shaking the spray bottle to keep the d.e. mixed evenly as you spray. I do mine in the shower. Works for very fiddly mealy hiding places!

Hi Claire, Ross, and Yoli. I hope you are all doing well 😊 I currently use a bulb duster when applying diatomaceous earth, which works in a similar way to what you've been trialling. Why is it, that it feels so good to have a new shipment of various soil mixtures for your plants. Plus having them all boxed up, and neat and tidy. You need to get a couple of very large see through totes/boxes, and put all your planty type things away in them. Label them as well, it would look much neater you in your closet that keeps on giving. LOL I am waiting for two bags of the special Cactus and succulent mix I use, and it's exciting. Can't wait to use some, on some plants that I didn't get re-planted in it, because I ran out. Ross and you are doing great with your spanish. Congrats.

I'm only half way through the video but had to stop and comment. Your Begonia will love that set up. I love colorful leaves and have an array of Begonia Rex and others and I keep them all in a self-watering/semi hydro situation of one kind or another and they absolutely love it. Mine take about a week to realize what is going on and then they take off. Insane new growth and sometimes have to upsize twice in 6 months. Keep an eye on that resevoir. They are very thristy once they get going and realize there is a never ending supply of water. If they dry out they will very dramatically flop over and drop some leaves, but they come back pretty quick with a good water and an apology lol. Mine are thriving in a warm humid plant room under very good grow lights. Keep us posted!! :)

I visit Mexico at least once a year, but where I live in the US, we have a lot of Spanish speakers, so I really should take advantage of the Babbel promotion because my Spanish is less than stellar. If you are getting into rex begonia, take a look at the "silver limbo". It turned me onto rex begonia and now I am hooked. I recommended it to Emma as well, because she loves the hatacoa "Silver" that she got at the Malvern Festival, and the silver limbo is even more metallic than the hatacoa.

I don’t really care for Leca as substrate by itself, but I do really enjoy using it as the base layer for plants in no drainage (whether it be semi hydro or a soiless substrate). I find it helps keep root rot at bay because of the extra oxygen down there and you don’t need a separate container for the reservoir.

I lost my lindenii recently and it grew back from a pile of dirt! I let it dry out completely, cut back the foliage, pulled up the bulbs cut off all the roots and repotted. Yours should be fine! ❤
